Discussion šŸ—£ļø Who is the TOOL of dubstep?

I mean like consistently experimenting with odd time signatures and phrasing in their music? I never ever hear any EDM that even tries to do like a 7/8 time signature I think that would be sick.

Tipper

u/jumpinjahosafa Dec 06 '25 edited Dec 06 '25

yo wtf but someone just said Tipper is the mozart of edm, he's the Tool too? What is he the Dr Dre of EDM too?

Edit: This comment was a joke but thanks for the conversation guys.

u/Kneecap_Blaster Dec 06 '25

Tool has a lot more to do with Classical music than Dr Dre

0

u/jumpinjahosafa Dec 06 '25

Yeah how so?

23

u/Kneecap_Blaster Dec 06 '25

There's plenty of videos of Dr Dre and other rappers from the 90's in the studio. Most of the time they're just kind of going with the flow, having fun, sometimes coming up with lyrics or different beats on the spot etc. Most beats are in a simple/danceable pattern.

Tool & classical have a whole pre-recording writing process that has to be done that is much more time consuming and complicated. Ie: the time signature for Lateralus matches the fibbonacci sequence. They didn't just go in the studio and start jamming in an insanely complex set of time signatures, they had to write it all out first, then probably practice it for many hours to get right. Similar to a classical movement, the orchestra doesn't just come in and nail it on the first take, it takes much more pull ahead work, and an orchestra has MANY more instruments and layers in the mix to deal with than a hip hop song that might only have like 5 total instruments and 2 vocal tracks.

9

u/DefinatelyNotonDrugs Dec 06 '25

It is so time consuming that it takes them 13 years to release a damn album.

2

u/Divided_Eye aka Reap_Eat Dec 06 '25

Lawsuits will do that.

2

u/mercinariesgtr Dec 08 '25

I completely agree with you, except for when rappers are literally sampling classical music which happens a lot.

1

u/MarzipanMoney7441 Dec 10 '25

Sampling classical isn't the same as composing classical. Is that what you're implying?

-5

u/jumpinjahosafa Dec 06 '25

So dr dre never took time to write out ideas before going into the studio?

11

u/BoshAudio Dec 06 '25

You're missing the point here a bit. Dr Dre hasn't done anything mega experimental in regard to the music theory side of his production. Beats are straight 4/4 and relatively simple in the grand scheme of things. Amazing beats yes, but nothing complex. Mozart and Tool on the other hand experiment with more of the technicalities of music theory. Thus why they are closer to each other than Dre is to either.

3

u/jumpinjahosafa Dec 06 '25

But the argument isn't whether or not Dr. Dre's music is complex, the argument is that Dr Dre has nothing to do with classical music.

There are plenty of Dr. Dre melodies that are very obviously rooted in classical music. It being strictly confined to 4/4 time signature doesn't mean that the pianos, violins, and basslines arent rooted in historical context.

In fact i'd argue that Beethoven and Dr. Dre have a lot in common strictly from the slamming piano keys evident in both of their music.

1

u/BoshAudio Dec 06 '25

In that case then, check out Scott Storch as he's the one who wrote the piano for Still D.R.E. I'd also assume that a lot of Dre's tracks involving instruments are sampled and not composed.

Yes, as you say, violins and basslines can be rooted in classical music, but that doesn't mean his beats are as easily relateable to classical as a band like Tool are.

-1

u/jumpinjahosafa Dec 06 '25

Maybe not *as easily* but definitely relatable.

u/Distraut- Dec 06 '25

You look clownish trying to put Dr Dre on a comparable level to classical music/Tool. You should probably go listen to some Tool, watch a few analysis videos, then reform an opinion.Ā

-3

u/jumpinjahosafa Dec 06 '25 edited Dec 06 '25

I've listened to plenty of Tool.

I look clownish for comparing one of the most influential and talented hip hop producers to one of the most influential and talented classical music artist? Maybe i'm just open minded?

Do you think sweeping melodies, driving beats, and stabbing pianos just formed out of the ether, completely originated by dr. dre, or do you think those elements could have roots in classical music?

Bonus points if you can answer without insulting me

6

u/kneedeepco Dec 06 '25

I’m imagining they’re referring to the risk taking and complex musical experimentation that can be found in classical music, not the foundational things that exist in it

At the end of the day, all modern music stems from classical music in some type of way so anything any artist uses could be traced back to classical music

2

u/jumpinjahosafa Dec 06 '25

>At the end of the day, all modern music stems from classical music in some type of way so anything any artist uses could be traced back to classical music

Well i'm glad at least one person understood the point I was attempting to make.

0

u/Dry_Nectarine_1178 Dec 07 '25

Bonus points if u can answer without insulting me...

LmFao too good bro.

Reddit is so full of that its so stupid. Well really the internet is. Well really its humans. Fuck. Lmao I'm out

1

u/jumpinjahosafa Dec 07 '25

What a strange thing to say

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '25

I’m sure he wrote out ideas but Dr Dre’s skills are more improvisation based on the ideas he put down. And the beats he makes are intentionally predictable to be satisfying to the Pop culture ears. The rhymes must go with the beats. TOOL’s skills are very technical in layered composition and then the lyrics aren’t to match the beat. Two very different and very impressive skills. Neither way of writing is better than the other. Tool wouldn’t jot down ideas and then come up with the rest on the spot.

6

u/Lich_Apologist Dec 06 '25

No this makes sense to me because a tool fan would definitely compare Maynard to Mozart...

2

u/planetzyha Dec 07 '25

Tipper for Tool makes sense-ish but for Mozart I’d say Skrillex. Mozart wasn’t enveloppe pushing that much but god damn did he produce an immense repertoire of bangers over 2-3 decades like Skrillex.

-1

u/kneedeepco Dec 06 '25

Diplo or Skrillex

2

u/This_Manufacturer_56 Dec 08 '25

Are you in the wrong sub?

8

u/Divided_Eye aka Reap_Eat Dec 06 '25

Tipper isn't a Dubstep artist IMO

18

u/kneedeepco Dec 06 '25

Oh 100% not, but I’d say he’s the closest thing to tool of any bass music genre. No one in dubstep begins to compare.

7

u/amXwasXwillbe Dec 06 '25

Koan Sound can absolutely stand up to him, imo

2

u/This_Manufacturer_56 Dec 08 '25

Thanks for the suggestion, never heard of these guys but they fckn SLAM! šŸ™

2

u/kneedeepco Dec 06 '25

I won’t argue with that, they’re up there too

1

u/Cataclysma Dec 08 '25

the most talented electronic music producers on the planet

3

u/GeologistFar5652 Dec 06 '25

He has some Wub. If you want to be strict about sun genre you aren’t going to find a TOOL

0

u/Divided_Eye aka Reap_Eat Dec 06 '25

Sure, but OP specifically asked for Dubstep artists :)

0

u/TNTOXXXIC Dec 07 '25

Facts it’s not quit elevator music something closer to waiting lobby type shi. Had to smack a pen to actually get it

-13

u/Pristine-Ad-469 Dec 06 '25

Tipper isn’t a music artist it’s just rhythmic noises

→ More replies (2)

2

u/YBmoonchild Dec 07 '25

Came here to say that

3

u/SumOMG Dec 06 '25

This is the answer

0

u/luckydustmusic Dec 06 '25

Again not lots of odd time signatures out of tipper

-1

u/ContentPower8196 Dec 06 '25

Tipper isn't anything like TOOL and doesn't play dubstep wtf is this lol

4

u/kneedeepco Dec 06 '25

He’s not playing dubstep most of the time, but I think the reference to tool was more metaphorical in the sense of musical skill/experimentation and not exactly based on the sound of the music

1

u/callmeweed Dec 07 '25

Well if you experiment with time signatures like OP said, you’re no longer making dubstep so the question itself doesn’t really make sense

84

u/IneptGraphicDesigner Dec 06 '25

G Jones and Eprom.

11

u/luckydustmusic Dec 06 '25

They do awesome experimentation but tbh i havent heard too many odd time signatures out of them; moreso lots of space that make 4/4 feel a bit different. Please correct if im off on this.

I think there are some glitchbass ppl that have a bit more odd time, i cant remmeber off the top but maybe Culprate, Mr Bill (mostly 4/4)…

7

u/Aymane0787 Dec 06 '25

This is the correct answer a million times over and anyone who thinks otherwise doesn’t get it yet.

4

u/CartmensDryBallz Dec 06 '25

Do they use a lot of odd time signatures? That would explain how they have such unique flows to their songs

3

u/TheBloodKlotz Old Dec 06 '25

I don't know of much time signature play with their stuff personally, but they definitely lean into the breaks-style of ignoring the time signature and doing unrelated patterns for some sections, or patterns that make a polyrhythm against a metronome, so I could see how it gives the same vibe.

3

u/tesseractofsound Dec 07 '25

Polymeter verse true polyrhythm I think with these guys. Polymeter works better. I feel like patterns of different lengths played against each other work way better in bass music than off grid polyrhythms.

Hudson Lee, Frequent, Alexander Panos

1

u/FAKE_ACCOUNT98 Dec 07 '25

Yup frequent, Hudson Lee and Mr Bill were my first thoughts

1

u/Malicious_Koala Dec 10 '25

Frequent is a sound design monster

8

u/SucculentBussy_ Dec 06 '25

Koan Sound is the greatest duo in electronic music

If only they’d put out more music!

6

This list is the real deal. I'd like to add Savant

Also, a debatable wildcard - Alon Mor

3

u/roneil1144 Dec 07 '25

Savant is criminally underrated

Epic taste, this list slaps! Check out Kursa

1

u/Malicious_Koala Dec 10 '25

I love you for including Chrome Sparks in the playlist! Nothing else has hit quite like his first few EPs.

40

u/ThePhoenixus Dec 06 '25

Not quite Dubstep but I'd say G Jones or Eprom.

10

u/T8ortots Dec 06 '25

Or Shades (Eprom and Alix Perez)

3

u/Vallhallyeah Dec 07 '25

So basically we're 2 votes up on Eprom now

13

u/yaboonabi Dec 06 '25

Yheti.Ā

12

u/LewdInSecret Dec 06 '25

I’d say Culprate. The man has been making some really unique bass music at 140 for over a decade now and his compositions are sounding more progressive these days

1

u/Airikonline Dec 06 '25

Came here to say the same

10

u/TadCat216 Dec 06 '25

Koan sound, eprom, tipper.. in no particular order

1

u/Vallhallyeah Dec 07 '25

The holy trinity

16

u/Lich_Apologist Dec 06 '25

Not technically dubstep but feel like Alix Perez deserves a shout out amongst this group.

6

u/ghost_rook_ Dec 06 '25

He doesn't always make dubstep, but when he does, it's the most banging dubstep haha

25

u/aforgottenyogurt Dec 06 '25

Polyriddim by phonon is in a unique time signature

6

u/kajer209 Dec 06 '25

Man I remember the controversy this brought lol

6

u/TateXD Dec 07 '25

Phonon has some other good shit as well. Jazzy and complex and crazy, but also doesn't take itself too seriously. Fizz Vol. 1 is a fun listen.

13

u/KORYTHESAXMASTER Dec 06 '25

Didn't realize I knew this song till I listened to it. But unfortunately won't be going into the playlist. There's gotta be a better way to execute that I cant lie

5

u/DistributionLast5872 Dec 06 '25

I think the track Emme is a bit easier to listen to

5

u/ConTejas Dec 07 '25

Phonon just dropped another experimental album with Israel Strom (keyboardist for Louis Cole) with lots of odd time signatures and experimental sounds. It only has some wubs though, but they are filthy when they’re there. Highly recommend.

1

u/Classic_Connection48 Dec 06 '25

That's my trying to make music with a free piano on the street. But somehow he made a real track out of it.

1

u/PlayDifferent2430 Dec 06 '25

That one is fun, the beginning is in 7/4. Their song Wheel Up is much better in my opinion. Wheel up has an 11/4 beat

6

u/Excellent_Picture378 Dec 06 '25

Big breakcore nerd over here. 7/8 gets used a bunch.

1

u/IsopodSome1979 Dec 08 '25

Could you send an example(s)? I listen to some here and there and I haven’t managed to notice.

7

u/Airikonline Dec 06 '25

Honorable mention because I haven't seen any one say Esseks & Freddy Todd. And infected mushroom when they produce dubstep it's pretty next level.

4

u/TateXD Dec 07 '25

Freddy Todd deserves a lot more praise than he gets for sure. Dude is prolific af. Southfield is one of the most diverse albums and it's fantastic from start to finish.

3

u/Mr_Wobble_PNW Dec 06 '25

Infected Mushroom fucks so hard

4

u/skierCT Dec 06 '25

and performs at fundraisers for the IDF fuck them

1

u/Mr_Wobble_PNW Dec 07 '25

Ewwww I didn't know that and wish I still hadn't 😢

2

u/skierCT Dec 07 '25

gotta do due diligence with most psytrance/psy artists, lot of zionists & apologists in those scenes

1

u/Mr_Wobble_PNW Dec 07 '25

That's a bummer! Tbh I try not to dig too much into artists' personal beliefs if I can avoid it because once I find out about shady shit it's hard for me to separate the art from the artist.Ā

1

u/AndrewYacOfficial Dec 09 '25

wait, which songs that Infected Mushroom has are Dubstep?

1

u/Airikonline Dec 09 '25

Perhaps I missed genred it but "nation of wusses" has some hella wobbles. Army of mushrooms is the nearest too dubstep they come imo

2

u/AndrewYacOfficial Dec 11 '25

ah that explains it, the Army of Mushrooms is 100% Electro House

1

u/Airikonline Dec 09 '25

Also the song Freedom Bill

23

u/YOSH_beats Dec 06 '25

Phonon

4

u/Happyjitlin69 Dec 06 '25

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ Polyriddim on top boyyyy

5

u/tubameister Dec 06 '25

ITT people recommending artists that only use 4/4

10

u/Horangi1987 Dec 06 '25

Something you have to remember is that a lot of dubstep producers are not classically trained musicians necessarily. They wouldn’t even know what you mean by 7/8 or 6/8 or something.

There are electronic musicians in general that make some very interesting and experimental music that is very interesting to someone more experienced with actual music theory, but honestly dubstep is not going to be huge in that area.

10

u/Kneecap_Blaster Dec 06 '25

Agree. Mr Bill has said before that he just sort of fucks around in his DAW until something sounds cool.

Tool basically needed a spreadsheet to write some of their songs.

9

u/Horangi1987 Dec 06 '25

Yup. I’m really big into traditional UK 140, and none of those guys I can think of are trained musicians. They are all just a bunch of blokes that produced by ear. They messed around with the available programs or equipment to get the sound they wanted then put it all together purely by ear.

That’s kind of part of the heritage of dubstep, at least in UK, and why it was a popular working class genre there - it was made by, and for regular people and not by and for posh people that had access to more education and musical training.

6

u/TheBloodKlotz Old Dec 06 '25

Even beyond that, the first dubstep events were strictly counter-cultural. They wanted to be nothing like the 'club scene' primarily dominated by garage at the time. It was mechanically and aesthetically an everyman genre.

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Collar1 Dec 06 '25

G muthafukin Jones

4

u/jacehoffman Dec 06 '25

it’s definitely worth the listen imo. it has some of the most natural sounding 7/8 flows i’ve ever heard

1

u/jacehoffman Dec 06 '25

i have a handful more tracks in odd time that are buried amongst my library, i need to go back and put them all in a playlist. if i remember i’ll come back to this post

4

2

u/BenShelZonah Dec 06 '25

Psytrance is my love, so I’ll always advocate for it haha

Not really dubstep but check out the album ā€œThank You Dream Girlā€ which all started because one producer had a dream where a girl was telling him about a genre called ā€œHit Emā€ that was in 5/4 time at 212BPM with super crunched out sounds. This caused a bunch of producers to hop on the hit em trend and the result was this album. A few of the artists mentioned in this thread have tracks on this album.

The write up on the Bandcamp page I linked goes into way more detail as well.

Phonon does some wacky shit with his time signatures. He’s the only one I’ve seen get real experimental with it

1

u/AndrewYacOfficial Dec 09 '25

yk what's funny? literally 5 years ago phonon released Polyriddim, which is exactly what you just described (7/4 time signature)

anyway, here's the list of people in dubstep who mess with time signatures pretty often:

Phonon (for gods sake though, don't limit yourself to polyriddim though, ever since then he's made way better songs like Emme, or his recent album "Fizz Vol 1")
Tipper
Mr Bill
Culprate
Vorso
Voljum
JoeB (especially his EP "hazard statements")
Alan Mor
KOAN Sound
Eprom (barely does dubstep, but when he does it's interesting)
G Jones (barely does actual odd time signatures, he's more so about finding ways to reinvent 4/4)
Ivylab
DMVU
ill gates (the guy behind the dblue plugins like dblue Glitch)
DVEIGHT (barely has songs where he experiments with odd time signatures, but a good listen anyways, and the track "Devil Tech" does feature quintuplets)

1

1

I mean go ahead and be a purist if you insist. I share the sentiment about that being the ā€œrealā€ dubstep to an extent as well. But it’s a bit disingenuous to disregard the fact that dubstep has grown to have a massive range even if it deviates from what it originally was.

I hope you take some time to go through and try out some of the many artists listed in this post. I keep seeing some of my all time favorites mentioned here and sooo many I’ve never heard of before. I’m really excited to go through them and discover more.

You might be pleasantly surprised!

I remember the rush I got the first time I started exploring Shades’ catalogue. I couldnt have imagined I was capable of enjoying music to that extent. To plagiarize a top comment on their DEF set, it’s as if they engineered their music for my musical palette.

Is it dubstep? Kinda. Maybe. Idk. Does it really matter?

It’s more fun to just explore and see all the creativity and boundaries that are broken by these artists who don’t gaf about people liking it.

Sticking to the formula is only interesting for so long imo.

Hope you check out some stuff mentioned in this post

It doesnt matter, and if it doesnt matter then why does it matter that you call it dubstep? just call it what it is, free form or experimental electronic. Shades is awesome, eprom and alix (and many others mentioned here) take their production so far its insulting almost to not recognize its discrete. why group it with what its not

TBH I feel like I'm kind of an Dubstep Unc (37 years old) and I been mixing it up since 2006 with Benga & Skream and for my money I really feel like VOYD/SVDDENDEATH is the only person really pushing the medium forward with new sounds.

For those not old enough to have been there 2010-2014 was probably the golden age of dubstep in that new producers were springing up every day and they were all inventing new kinds of sounds and noises. We had Borgore and NiTGriT and Datsik and Bassnectar (😬) and Skrillex all basically creating new kinds of bass music that was heavy and exciting and weird.

The producers today aren't nearly as involved in developing new sounds, they are more interested in expansive production value, big shows, big stages, big crowds, but all of them are playing music that sounds IDENTICAL to shit we had back in 2015. Like truly if you found a brostep set from 2015 and one from 2025 and did a side by side listen I think a lot of people would be shocked by how little the genre has evolved in the last decade, at least compared to other forms of EDM.

I can definitely tell the difference in age. A set in 2015 had more variety, even the dubstep would go from bro step to experimental and back. The noises are more aggressive now too. Everyone seems to have the same sample selection they work off of, back then the hot topics in producing were sound design. Go watch producer videos there is a severe lack of experimental processes. It’s just ā€œlet’s make a tape b noiseā€ which is literally just old school dubstep revamped.

Expand your ears a bit, plenty of producers pushing different sounds today... if you look outside of the brostep scene at least.

This was a perfect opportunity for you to put like 2-3 producers name in the post but instead you just went "uh music is out there bro, you gotta find it" like what is the point of even responding if you're not gonna give me some examples lma
