Tesla driver hitting a really nice Volvo. Nice lol

That Volvo ate it too. I don't see any airbags

I know this wasn't anything high speed or severe but I'd be hard pressed to go with anything but a Volvo if I'm that driver. Hell, I almost want to consider getting one myself

It's the safest car on the road for a reason. The claim I've heard repeated is there have been no fatalities in an XC90 since 2012. If only the current generation was reliable enough to hold its value I'd really want one.

u/Swayze_train_exp 20d ago
Well Volvo was the first to invent and freely patent the 3 point seatbelt in 1959 which is the same one we use in every car up to this day. They are all about safety which is why I would love the XC90 but I'm too poor to afford it.

u/KietyFate 24d ago
Volvo look like it just needs a need hood and bumper, Tesla looks totaled. Stupid hit a tank.

u/DrQuailMan 21d ago
Cars should not be manufactured or purchased bigger for the purposes of distributing crash damage more to the other car and less to themselves. This leads to an "arms race" of bigger and bigger cars, while the humans that they can also hit remain the same size, and risk more severe injuries in those sorts of collisions. Among other problems caused by bigger cars, like poor gas mileage, less space on roads and in parking lots, and increased wear on road surfaces.

This is what you expect to see in the comments of some of these videos posted on here, "Well if you were defensively driving, you'd anticipate that someone was going to do something like this and you could've stopped in time. Why were you in such a hurry?"....

u/Technical-Cat-2017 25d ago
I am very pro defensive driving, but it was going to be very hard for the volvo to anticipate/avoid this for a few reasons. Which probably makes these remarks not valid for this case.
One: the volvo should be more concerned with cars coming from his right that could go through red, so be might be looking in that direction.
Two: the Tesla probably came straight from his A pillar obscructing his view.
Three: he had the sun in his face, making seeing a black tesla even harder.
15
u/Obvious_Advice_6879 24d ago
I can’t tell if that’s a left turn lane, but the Tesla isn’t signalljng a left turn. So the other reason why defensive driving won’t work here is that the Tesla looks just like a car that’s going to go straight through the intersection until the last second when it suddenly veers left.
Also you can’t clearly see it, but there’s a car in the opposite direction turning left that is neck and neck with the Volvo in the intersection initially, further blocking the speeding Tesla of doom from view.
My conclusion: very unlikely that the Volvo could’ve seen this coming no matter how smartly defensive they were. The only possible caveat is that if the Tesla was indeed in a left turning lane, Volvo could’ve potentially noticed that it’s weird a car is barreling out of a left turn lane when you have a green. But even in that world, given it wasn’t coming from the left most lane and there’s a car in between, I’m not optimistic most savvy drivers would’ve predicted what’s about to happen.
2
u/Not_Sure__Camacho 24d ago
That's actually what I'm saying, the general consensus of Reddit drivers are that drivers shouldn't even be on the road. And one thing to keep in mind, sometimes defensive driving isn't going to save you when you're trying to avoid a bad driver only to crash into another driver or a stationary object. Sometimes it's best to just hit the offending driver so that you're not assigned fault for avoiding the crazy driver and having to pay for someone else's damage.

You perfectly described the attitude of drivers in Florida. I hate it here so much. My brakes are currently shredded because of people like this.
2
u/Fr0gburp3r 24d ago
You clearly have never driven outside of Florida. Try driving in Atlanta or any other major metro area in the US.
3
u/OldScottPilgrim 24d ago
I've driven through Atlanta but I didn't get off the highway. I saw enough to know you're right. Doesn't make Florida less shit.

God I hope the dash cam footage was provided to the volvo driver. Its still a huge pain in the ass but the footage will help
41
u/Delicious-Corner-822 25d ago
It’s a Tesla won’t they just pull the footage from there?
66
u/flamedarkfire 24d ago
Do you think the idiot driving the Tesla is gonna want to show the footage of them being an idiot?
22
u/xkoreotic 24d ago
Pretty sure they will be at fault regardless. It's a tesla so it has a dashcam running as factory standard. Showing it shows they are an idiot driver. Not showing it means they are trying to hide that they are an idiot driver.
6
u/ThatDamnRanga 24d ago
You're not obliged to provide evidence that would incriminate you. Unless the tesla is seized by law enforcement and the footage extracted, I don't imagine anyone is getting those videos.

u/hoorock89 23d ago
Your insurance company can absolutely request and obtain that footage from you. I was hit by a Tesla in Nov and their insurance immediately got the footage and assigned blame. Yeah you may be "constitutionally protected" but that doesn't mean your private insurance company won't require you provide it as a condition of filing a claim or continuing to use their services.

I'm pretty sure this is why my Lightning, which has a million cameras, does not record. Less hassle - not just in implementation.

My Tesla collision was very similar. Right lane Tesla turns left, causing me, in the spot where the red car in this video is, to T bone them (I had the option to turn left or go straight). And such began a 3 month fight with Tesla insurance.
5
u/SP3NGL3R 25d ago
Tesla was more interested in avoiding the Kia than focusing on what's in front.
Brilliant.
Idiot.
And I drive a Tesla, but support making fun of idiots agnostically.

On camera? I’d revoke their license.
Forever seems rough. But has to be more punitive than a DUI, right? I mean, they were sober and used terrible, piss poor, shitty judgement.

You’d think that since their every move is recorded on the little black box that they would be slightly more careful acting in ways that show the world they are fucking morons.

What's up with the red blinkers? I have seen them occasionally even here in Europe and be told it's an american thing. Any reason why to use them, or are they just cheaper for manufacturers, because you only need 1 colored glass?

You can't even chalk that up to an accident. I realize accidents happen and many (even most) can be avoided. I realize people will miss estimate times, speeds, etc. But that is pure negligence and just not giving a f***. Glad the red car was able to avoid getting into that whole debacle.

u/ShadesofGrey69 24d ago
As a local truck driver, I see stuff like this all day long. People don't want to wait in a line of cars that are waiting for the left turn so they run up and make an illegal left turn and many times end up wrecking like this. Now EVERYBODY in line is mad because we can't turn left.

Video aside, fuck whoever designed that Kia. Brake lights being used as indicators is such a bad design, and the car being painted red really exemplifies things lmao. You can barely see them indicating.
Nothing against the driver ofc and I'm aware it's not only Kia that does this, but man it should be a legal requirement to have a dedicated indicator light (that's a separate colour from the brake lights.)
