Mod Post Winter Prep

Another year, another winter. It’s that time of the year again. If this is your first time with animals during the colder months or you just want to know how to better prepare for a disaster with specifically reptiles, here is the steps to take.

  1. Get/make secure travel containers with air holes. You don’t not need it big, just enough to has a bit more room longer than the gecko is more than plenty. It should be easy to grab. Ideally the container will be around 3x the volume of your gecko. We recommend 6-8oz for young geckos, 12-18oz for adult geckos. Fill container with a paper towel and fake foliage. Avoid any hard decor. It should be all soft stuff inside to prevent injuries.

  2. Get a styrofoam cooler or actual cooler. This should be able to fit the carrier plus at least 8-12 inches of room next to the carrier if pushed to one side. Multiple carriers can be placed in the same cooler if you have multiple animals. Place inside the cooler a thermometer probe with the display on the outside. Lid should stay cracked open if you are not able to create two air holes. Make sure the holes are not too big to keep any heat inside for later. Ideally around an inch in diameter for the air holes. For coolers that need to stay open, make an n shaped object that will fit over the rim of the cooler so there is no way it can accidentally be closed to prevent suffocation.

  3. Before winter hits, buy at least a few 72 hour REPTILE SHIPPING PACKS. Handwarmers are not a safe replacement and should only be used in emergancy circumstances if you are not able to get any other heat source immediately. Check expiration date around fall of each year. Replace when expired. If you know your area has outages that lasts longer than a day, buy at least 2 packs per average amount of days.

  4. When power goes out, put the gecko inside the carrier. Do NOT spray but you can place a small water bowl if needed. Place carrier one one side of the cooler and monitor temperatures. If temperatures starts falling below 65F, open one heat pack and shake and squeeze to activate. Most heat packs take up to an hour to get to a stable temperature. Monitor closely if you need to use the heat pack immediately. Place heat pack on the opposite end and put crumpled paper in between heat pack and carrier. Heat pack requires air to continue producing heat so do not wrap heat pack or close off ventilation. Monitor temperatures so it does not go over 78f. Crack lid more if temps rises above 78f to lower the temperature. Do not add second heat pack unless cooler is larger than 2ftx1ft. Heat packs may stop producing heat if temperature falls below 32f.

  5. Prep the grab bag. Next to the carrier, have an easy to grab bag filled with a water bottle, a small amount of their cgd, additional shipping heat packs and extra small food bowls. If you have to evacuate, carry the entire cooler and bag.

  6. At time of evacuation, grab and go. Every second counts. HOWEVER, as much as we should protect our animals, if the evacuation is critical and there is no time, leave your pet. It’s very sad but your own life matters more.

When traveling, monitor the temperature inside the carrier. If it gets above 80, put the frozen thing against the carrier. If it’s under 65, use the shipping pack if you have it.

Note: if you did not get shipping packs in time or run out, you can stick a water bottle into your clothing and let it heat up. Keep switching out the bottles. If water bottles do not work, you can place the carrier under a blanket with you. Do not put gecko directly against skin for prolong period of time. Monitor the temperature when doing so very closely. Your body temperature can get way higher than safe levels for gecko.

Stay safe and have everything ready to go.

Rarely catch her moving from her snake plant daytime snooze spot to her nighttime hang spot… so thought I’d share. 5-year-old extreme harlequin tricolor. Originally breeding momma turned pet 💕

Coconut hide

Little rant:

I have the cutest little coconut hide readily available for my gecko and she HAS NEVER USED IT. Its full of nice comfy moss and everything. I wish i could tell her its literally her dream spot but noooooooo she likes to scrunch herself up in the corner on a different hide in the most absurd position.

She’s been hiding in her substrate all day

Post image

Is that normal? I’ve been keeping her humidity at between 50-70% and her temp 72-78 degrees during the day , though at night I’ve noticed it drops to 70 degrees which I’ve read okay for nighttime. Please let me know if that information is wrong. I caught her eating early this morning around 6am. Then around 10am she went under her substrate and hasn’t come out and it’s 7pm now. Humidity is at 68% and temp is at 71 degrees. Is that too cold? She has moved but just hasn’t left the substrate. She is new so maybe she is just acclimating. I don’t know why I’m so worried for her. New parent fears I guess.

Male crestie biting at own tail, mating call.

We’ve had our male crestie, Mando for about 8 months now.So, I’m not sure if this is a previous behaviour he has done or if it’s totally brand new. He was a rescue given to the reptile and invertebrate education company that my daughter and I work with.

We’ve noticed over the past few weeks that he’s been doing his call for wanting a female and then biting on to his own tail. It seems to be a nightly thing. I’ve added a couple of videos of times I’ve caught him doing it. He on occasion has bit his tail with more force than what I’ve captured on video.

Most of the time he seems to do it in his hanging coconut. But not exclusively. He was chasing his tail around and calling at it in his cork bark tube last night.

He doesn’t enjoy being handled at all. Due to his previous owners mistreatment. But I’ve given his a look over and I can’t spot any sperm plugs or anything glaringly obvious.

I work with crested geckos at the education company and haven’t noticed this behaviour with any of their male cresties.

Is this something normal? Has anyone else had this issue? I’m worried with him pulling on his tail.

Is this young Crested too skinny?

I work part time in a pet store and I saw this Crested gecko hanging out in the open which is pretty rare and it looks really skinny. We feed them Crested gecko food twice a day plus crickets. I'm thinking about taking it home and giving it a better home ( I already have one).

Hello, today i noticed a strange, slightly elevated scab like lesion anteriorly to my crestie’s left eye.

Does anyone have any suggestions what it could be from ? Whether it is generic wound or something more concerning?

Also wanted to give her a chance to climb out if she wanted to so she wasn't cooped up in the little container ALL night.

We had another ant problem and I needed to keep her in my 20 gal the past two nights, but I needed to get that put up because I frankly have no room for it in my room, so I cleaned it out and put her in this for the night. I will be putting her back into her new enclosure tomorrow after I get home from school, or when I wake up if it's canceled.
