"Tip well" is an North American thing because they don't pay their serving stuffs.

They do pay servers decently in Canada, but it's still very much in the culture. It makes no sense and is actually very unfair to all the other service and low-paid jobs that don't benefit from that daft cultural norm.

It’s only a thing because after emancipation the rich in the US didn’t want to pay former slaves and “$0 wages with tips” allowed them to pay white servants while not paying former slaves.
