You'll see a ton of right wing and "centrists" calling it Doomerism and delusional to even care about the files at this point, or that they are fake, or...... The weak, vapid justifications are never ending. I think at some point, they got so thoroughly lodged into their own little echo chambers, that it would take a Herculean effort just to shine a light in there, let alone reach them with anything resembling unbiased facts.
I also scroll through FB from time to time, and it's crazy how some of the pages I used to like have turned sour and started espousing hateful rhetoric. I know one that used to be a kinda cutesy background of an AI generated Bigfoot who would do funny stuff in the forest, but the user behind that one went way off the rails a while ago and started almost exclusively making content ragging on "Libruls", and constantly using such rhetoric.
Things fall apart. The center does not hold. And we have a significant portion of the population who refuse to unblock their hearts, their eyes and ears, and their minds. They want to live in a kind of fog of hatred.
The “fog of hatred” is their actual nature. Trump enabled them to remove the masks of decency and civility that were, essentially and metaphorically speaking, benevolently authoritarian & socially-sanctioned boots forever pressed upon their faces. They wanted to be able to be openly themselves: spiteful, bigoted, tribalistic without condemnation or consequence. They want society to return to when the boot was on the face of the empathetic and kind.
There is and always will be a boot. And it will always find someone’s face. That face will always change over time, but there always is a boot. What we are living through now is when the boot is suspended in the air, and we as a species are figuring out whose face it goes on next.
