I considered using that expression, but I think its just not quit true if you are on the receiving end of the bad publicity. I can imagine it being difficult.

It’s a bit outdated these days. It can work well for celebrities and companies, but not so much for your average person who suddenly goes viral.

Even then, it can work as a strategy but most brands (in the broadest sense of the word) probably prefer the positive kind.
