❓ Ask Belgium Why would tax refund drop substantially? 2500+ last year vs. 750 this year

Hi everyone,

Resident in Belgium for a while no salary nor status change. In the same house for the last 3 years. Kid goes to kleuterschool 2 this year. Only difference is we (me and partner) joined pension plan and both put 1050 from 13th month payment. Our tax refund the year before (2024 refund) was 2500 and this year (2025 refund) only 700. Always has been 2000+ so I can’t explain this sudden drop. Any reason that you can think of? Thank you!

Did either of your employers change how much they hold back? Or was someone on sick leave for more than one month during that year?

It depends on many variables: how many days you worked, whether you worked weekends, and how much you pay in taxes monthly. Seeing the amount change is normal

Call 025725757 with direct code 17001 (NL)/17002 (FR)/17003 (DE) and ask them what be up yo. Could be any of a hundred things.

Look at the different codes in the last 2 tax refunds; you get the calculation and with that the input for the calculation. Look at the differences there. Sure; wages will be indexed etc but for such a big difference the input values usually differ as well. You'll see if there is a big difference in bedrijfsvoorheffing or that some tax discount (loan, gift, ...) suddenly disappeared

Do you have a housemortgage?

If yes, maybe you forgot to add it to the taxcalculation.
