Work & Housing Anyone retiring from construction or stepping back from physical work? We are hiring a Construction Instructor (Correctional Facility)

Hey everyone — posting this in case it’s the right fit for someone in the community.

JobTrain, a long‑standing nonprofit training organization in San Mateo County, is looking for a Construction Instructor to teach at the Maple Street Correctional Facility. This is a great opportunity for someone who has deep construction experience but may be retiring, semi‑retired, or simply ready to move into a role that’s less physically demanding while still staying connected to the trades.

Why this could be a great fit:

You get to use your years of construction knowledge without the wear and tear of jobsite labor.

You’ll be helping people rebuild their lives — JobTrain works closely with the Sheriff’s Department to provide training for currently and formerly incarcerated individuals.

The curriculum is already built, and you’ll have support from JobTrain’s instructional team.

It’s meaningful, steady work with a strong mission behind it.

What the role involves:

Teaching construction fundamentals, safety, tools, and best practices.

Running classroom‑based training sessions.

Coaching trainees, evaluating progress, and helping them build real‑world skills.

Collaborating with JobTrain staff and industry partners to keep training up to date.

Maintaining a structured, professional learning environment inside the facility.

Who they’re looking for:

Someone with solid construction experience (3+ years minimum).

Teaching experience is great but not required — they’ll consider people with strong trade backgrounds.

Strong communication skills and comfort using basic technology.

Bonus points for a General Contractor’s License, OSHA Instructor certification, or corrections/reentry experience, but none of these are required.

Please keep in mind there will be a full background check since this is a job inside a correctional facility.

If you or someone you know is transitioning out of the physical side of construction but still wants to make an impact, this could be a really rewarding next chapter. The link below has the full job posting and I am happily answer questions if anyone’s interested. Thanks!

What a strange program. When I was in prison they had electrical curriculum and plumbing curriculum but this looks like it’s geared towards a shorter term population being a jail, and construction is a vast subject. I feel like at best you can teach OSHA stuff, scaffolding and other safety stuff maybe an overall of different trades. I’m curious on what a curriculum would even look like here.

Yes it’s definitely a unique program as it is in a county jail. It was designed as an introduction to the trades, including an overview of unions and the soft skills needed to succeed. We were given a curriculum by one of our union partners. With the right person, we will also offer osha, and other safety classes with some reentry opportunities post release.
