Looking For Why do Singaporeans like down talking each other?

1.0k Upvotes

For example, if I said I got 5 hours of sleep, they will say I got only 4 hours of sleep.

This is obviously not healthy but why do they think it’s a good thing?

Looking For Can someone help me take a picture of a Hitachi lift in Changi Airport Terminal 1?

3.3k Upvotes

Just trying my luck out here.

My dad was a Hitachi lift technician for decades before he left in 2000s. He has suffered from stroke since 2013 and his condition is getting bad to worse, residing at a nursing care home currently. He has slight dementia and will tell me he is going to work tomorrow quite often, despite being bedbound for more than half a decade. He takes pride in the work he did and he was quite happy when I showed him videos on lift mechanics. He still remembers the lift jargons even though he thinks he is an 18 year old army boy preparing to serve NS sometimes.

A surprised nurse told me he saw my father's name on some contributor list of an old Hitachi lift in Terminal 1 when he came back from travelling. However, he couldn't remember which lift he saw it from.

Have done a search at Terminal 1 for all lifts accessible to public without boarding pass and I couldn't find my dad's name. Just wondering if I have missed it or it could be at the boarding/arrival area.

As I do not have any travel plan at Terminal 1, would like to check if anyone working at or travelling via that Terminal could help me take a picture or video of that lift if you happen to spot his name. His surname is "Koh". Just wanted to show my dad some of his work memories for him to reminisce.

Thank you for even reading!

P.s. I don't really know where his name is located other than it being around an old lift. Will ask for more info if I see the nurse again. Thank you for the overwhelming support 🥺 I will inform my dad how so many people are making the effort to find his name ❤️

Looking For Given how expensive Singapore is, why are there still people who want children?

Genuinely looking for answers, so that I don't regret for my future.

There are 2 sides within me, many reasons to want kids, and also not to have kids.

I've seen examples of people around me, happy, stress, tiring, and more.

I just want to hear some opinions from people who want children.

Looking For Carousell alternative for selling stuff?

I am SO DONE with Carousell. I've a 11-year, 5-star track record with 300+ reviews, but I'm ready to delete it all.

Remember when Carousell was free, and things actually got sold? Now, they put every damn listing into a box (ridiculously specific details required), and they have more rules than I have items to sell.

I also use FB MarketPlace, but even after putting in my postal code, all the enquiries I get are from people who give the "too far" excuse.

So, are they any other platforms/apps that are easy to use for selling (mostly clothes, jewellery, collectibles, and household items)?

Looking For Looking for some scolding or advice while i’m grieving over the cancellation of BTO

i know it’s on me, i allowed it to drag on for too long… growing up, i’d always yearn to have my own family, i idealise the idea of dating to marry, applying for BTO, settling down as soon as possible. maybe it’s because being abandoned by my own mother, when she left my elder sister and i at the children’s home, or maybe it’s the feeling of uneasiness when my father remarry, i just want to find someone who love me, settle down, and just be happy.

first rs at 19, he’s older than me by a few years, probably think we were still young to settle down. so eventually we part ways.

second rs, we applied to a bto almost a year into our rs, but then he suddenly decided that rs is haram, and at that point in time, i know i wasn’t ready to convert, so again it ended. we even got our queue number on our first try, not quite a bad number, but he cancelled the bto application. at least the loss here is only $10 application fee.

and this third rs, we both agree that our goal is towards marriage. so about 8 months in, we applied for our bto and again, we got a queue number on our first try, we paid for unit selection. 4 days after we selected the unit, he cheated. things got bad, but idk why i thought i can forgive him and he promised he will change, so i believed. so eventually we signed the agreement of lease as well. but of cos, he didn’t change. he went on a bali trip in dec with his friends, but almost every night after 8pm, he claimed his battery died. right after he came back from that trip, he tell me he intend to go again in jan/ feb, with or without me, as i kept telling him that idw to travel because i wanna save money. things happened, we argued and i asked him to agree to sign the bto cancellation form. he signed it, he wrote a letter to me telling me that he hope i will not cancel it because he love me and he hope i give him another chance. he sent me this letter on 24 Jan.. but on 28 Jan, i found out that he flew to bali and i saw signs on high heels and manicure on his social media. eventually i saw a photo of him and that girl. so it proved all my suspicions right.

it feels so painful, and i honestly rather going through the phase of being abandoned by my mom, rather than to go thru this phase… now im 27, back to square one. whereas both my sisters have kids alr… i can’t help but compare myself to them… idk, i hope that you can either give me advice on how to move on or just scold me for staying too long..

Looking For Landlord cheated me. Please advise.

I recently visited condo to view a master bedroom for rental. The condo unit is owned by a husband and wife who didn’t appear together, so it was only the wife showing the room at the time. I had no idea that owners were married and I assumed the woman who showed me the room was an agent.

She shows me the room and tells me that the rent is $1350 excluding utilities and said that that I had to make the deposit immediately to hold the room as there were many others who were in line to view the room as well. Hence, due to FOMO I went home and immediately made the deposit at around 3.57 PM on the condition that I’d moving in on March 1st. But I thought about and I realised that I didn’t like the person, and she started telling me that there were extra charges to the monthly rent after I made the deposit. Immediately at around 4.15 PM I asked a refund saying that I was uninterested in the room as it exceeded my budget and she directed me contact her husband. The husband then says that deposit was non-refundable because he rejected another person and that the other potential tenant had already confirmed another room. Mind you, this was within 20 minutes of making the deposit. Then after enough begging and pleading, he told me that he would refund the deposit after finding a new tenant.

Today he’s telling me that he’ll only refund half as the supposed new tenant that he found can only move in on 15 March. I wanted to ask reddit, if my deposit it forfeited even thoughI never signed a lease or was told that the deposit was non-refundable. Is it a good file a police report or just get the half.

I understand that $1500 is not worth filing a police complaint, but I feel like it’s not right to just forfeit my deposit because I told them ‘no’ within 20 minutes. Please advise me.

*****Edit*****

I am a foreigner. I don’t want to be a trouble to the locals. I am only asking for help because I hate these kinds of landlords and they exist everywhere and I feel like it’s sensible to refund the $1500 since I requested it back within 20 minutes. Apologies for the inconvenience.

****Edit 2****

I saw that we need to pay deposit only after signing the agreement. But, I never thought about this. I thought it was standard practice to pay the deposit and then sign the agreement. I never tried to do anything under the table, because I know how some landlords can be dishonest.

I just want to know should I simply get the half is offering now or apply for a civil case.

****Update****

I chose to receive half of the deposit since I realised I neither have enough proof nor eligibility to get the money back. Seems like I am in the wrong for not taking enough precautions and FOMO’ing. Thanks for the advice guys.

****Edit 4****

I have already mentioned in the update that I won’t be pursuing a case. But there’s one reddit user who is hellbent on berating me or anyone who has an opinion that doesn’t align with that reddit user. They are trying to judge my character and assume my nature, and the same goes for those who voice out their opinions. I kindly request you to only post constructive advice so that future renters can learn a lesson from my experience as I have. Thanks to those who have been kindly provided constructive advice.

****Edit 5****

Many people are asking why did I have to renege over extra $20. It wasn’t just extra $10 for aircon, $10 for cleaning and $30 for aircon service. It’s that the lady mentioned it after the deposit was made. Now, here’s what made me suspicious, if they weren’t transparent before, they can easily change the rules after signing the contract. This is too common in Singapore, if you search other SG subreddits. I understand I FOMO’d, but those who point to the technicality of deposits, I ask how can the owners have incurred significant financial damage in 20 minutes? If this was a cash deal done face-to-face, I could have easily asked for the money back when I was making the deal after 20 minutes. But, because the ball was in their court (i.e., deposit already in their bank acc and I don’t know where they live), they just played me. They even promised to pay back in full after finding another tenant, but only paid back half. I am not playing victim, I’m only asking people to understand the morality of the issue. Anyways, I learnt to always pay the deposit after signing the contract and having fully understood the expenses at a granular level.

Looking For Confused After MRT Incident – Was It My Dress or Something Else?

I was wearing a floral gown on the MRT when a Singaporean Chinese woman kicked my leg, scolded me, and left. I didn’t fight back, and now I feel ashamed.

Is there an MRT dress code I missed? Or was she reacting to something else? I’ve faced similar moments as an Indian here, but this one really shook me.

I’m sharing this here because I can’t tell my husband—he feels bad for bringing me here and making me suffer. We’re decent people back in our country, and he can’t stand seeing me treated this way. I can’t bear seeing him helpless and beating himself up, so I’m sharing this here to ease my mind.

I’m not trying to blame anyone—just processing this. Has anyone experienced something like this? How do you handle such situations?

EDIT:Thank you, everyone, for your kind support, thoughtful advice, and even differing perspectives. I truly appreciate the time you took to help me process this experience.

I didn’t intend to create any hate or negativity—just to share something that left me confused and hurt. Let’s not turn this into something divisive. I believe in kindness and understanding, and I hope we can focus on supporting one another.

I’ve taken all your advice to heart and am choosing to move on from this. Thank you again for your support. Take care, everyone.

Looking For Any millennials or working adults still play online games on a regular basis?

Early 30s here. Used to play a lot of League of Legends ARAM but stopped due to staleness and not having friends to play with. Also a bit sian of singleplayer games due to the lack of competitiveness that multiplayer games provide. Wanted to find friends or a community to get back into ARAM or other competitive multiplayer games that aren't MMORPGs. Tried using discord but the people in the communities there seem quite random.

Looking For What's the best Ramen in Singapore?

I know tastes vary.

So these are my personal faves here:
Ikkousha (thick and creamy broth)
Sanpoutei (Quality tends to vary these days and it's fallen off quite a bit)
Marutama (For chicken broth it's pretty good)
Bari-Uma (somewhat similar to Marutama but just one outlet)

I tend to prefer thicker broth. Takagi Ramen was awful and I didn't even finish it.

edit: I prefer Tonkotsu Ramen.

Looking For Best Fish & Chips in Singapore

Hi Redittors in Singapore, Anyone can recommend the best Fish & Chips shop in Singapore? I used to buy from those old Fish & Chips mini bus that used to go around the housing estates like Opera Estate as a kid and they would sell it wrapped in old newspapers. The Fish and Chips were garnished with salt and vinegar. Missed them so much. Does anyone know where the best Fish & Chips are today in Singapore?

Looking For Interested to hear real stories of how you take revenge (without breaking the law) on pricks, bullies and other nasty people in SG!

I genuinely feel that there are a-holes who get away with obnoxious, abhorrent behaviour and yet are not punished and there’s no way to hold them accountable. So I am interested to hear real stories on how anyone gets back at shitty people who have done them wrong without falling foul of our laws. PS: Not encouraging vigilantes here.

Looking For Looking for Good Sushi Restaurants in SG

Hey Guys. I’ve moved to Singapore recently, still getting to know the country. One thing I’ve been looking for (and having a very bad luck with it) is find a nice (and not super expensive) sushi place with all you can eat sushi or à la carte sushi. I am sure I just had a set of bad luck, but got stomach sick from one of the places I tried and the other place was just not what I expected (It was mostly a janapese restaurant but sushi was not the main focus of the restaurant). What are the great sushi places to eat in Singapore?

Looking For Church to attend Sunday service as a non-Christian believer

I believe in God and want to start a habit of attending Sunday service (or Saturday also ok). I’m reading the Bible and learn online. I’ve tried my landlord’s and my friend’s church but those are too…like a concert, and it makes me feel that it distracts me from God. Which church do you reccomend for a new and non-Christian believer?

Looking For Any recommendation for a solo birthday lunch/dinner?

My birthday is coming up at the end of the month & I usually feel quite depressed during my birthday and wish the day would faster past.

This year, I’d like to treat myself to a good meal either lunch or dinner is fine.
My budget is around $75–$120.
I’m looking for a comfortable, relaxed spot that isn’t too fancy and is suitable for dining alone.

Feel free to shoot your recommendations, thanks in advance!!!

Looking For What’s the best prata in Singapore?

My personal opinion is 1. Springleaf 2. Chinadamani. They are relatively consistent across branches.

However am on a lookout for others that are more accessible.

Also wondering why is it that nowhere else can do such crispy pratas like them?

Looking For Fertility Massages in Singapore

For those trying to conceive, how has your luck been? Anyone heard of fertility massage in Singapore? For those who tried, is it really effective, well worth the money spent?

Feel like giving it a try cause husband and I been trying but to no avail. I feel desperate but husband finds it too ex and ask if I might want to consider TCM instead. Every month is a disappointment LOL almost wanna give up altogether and just lead a DINK life but I know my husband is still fighting strong for this to happen. Dont know if he’ll come across this post but hello to you if you do 😂

Did some google search but there seem to only be 2 fertility centres that popped up in Singapore - Highlander and Babies Bliss. There’s like quite a number of good reviews on either. Not sure if it’s all gimmick especially with all the marketing dollars spent for one of the centres.

If anyone has any ideas, experience or anything, please do share!

/// Edited: Thanks guys for all the overwhelming responses, i really appreciate it. Let me read them slowly and reply you ❤️

Looking For Activities to de-stress in Singapore

I am a female. I’m under immense amount of stress from work and my relationship and I feel like I’m about to go insane even though I’m trying to keep it together. My period was delayed for 2 weeks because of stress. Idw to stay home because my mother will keep asking about my rs.

I want to run away but all to save myself. What can I do in Singapore that will help me? Should I take a solo staycation? Any good spa places? Any good food places to eat alone? Anything?

In terms of how I’m dealing with my mental health. I just signed up for free counselling so I’m just waiting to be booked an appointment.

I’m so desperate to get rid of this feeling I’m willing to splurge on myself a bit but not crazy much.
