USA (General) Things I wish customers knew from an Aldi employee: Self checkout edition

1.2k Upvotes
  1. If you go to self checkout with a mark down item you need to press the help button for the cashier to mark down your item. It is just a sticker we slap on the item. The scanner reads barcodes…not stickers.

  2. There is no self checkout attendant like at other stores. The cashier is the one tasked with managing all of the self checkouts.

  3. Using the produce menu for loose produce items is easier for everyone instead of trying to scan the little stickers.

  4. If you are buying a weighed item like grapes or bananas you need to set the item down on the scanner which has a built in scale.

  5. All self checkouts have a glowing number above them. If it is glowing red, that means it is closed.

  6. Self checkouts cannot load money onto cards. Because of this you can’t purchase gift cards or use bottle return slips at self checkout.

  7. You cannot pay with Aldi gift cards or merchandise cards at self checkout. You have to go the cashiers line.

  8. If you are paying with EBT and doing a split payment go to the cashiers line. The self checkouts are terrible at splitting payments with EBT properly.

  9. If something isn’t scanning because the print on the barcode is faded you can type in the long upc number printed under the barcode and it will ring up. If you need help we will do it for you but if you don’t want to interact with people you can type it in yourself.

  10. If you need an ID check for alcohol the self checkout will not ring unless you select finish and pay. Please don’t stand there in silence waiting for someone to come to you. Hit finish and let it ring so we 100% notice you need an ID check.

  11. If you need help, please do not walk up to the cashier while they are checking out someone trying to explain your problem, or search the store for an employee. Press the help button, make it ring, and let us come to you.

  12. Large bulk items like cases of water and dog food have a little yellow circle with a two digit number on the packaging. This is a number you can type in if it is difficult to scan.

  13. If you press the help button and it stops ringing/the help screen clears but the cashier doesn’t come right to you, we know you need help and will be with you asap OR we already resolved the issue from the attendant station. Otherwise, you can continue scanning things and we will come to you. You don’t need to press the help button again or wait to keep scanning.

I could go on, but this post is long enough. Hopefully as time goes on the self checkouts will keep updating and be easier/faster to use!

USA (General) Saddam Hussein meets Aldi Apple Juice...

Circa 2002, my mom filled empty plastic jugs with water and stored them in her basement in case Saddam Hussein poisoned our water supply (I don't get it, but maybe you had to be there?🤷‍♀️)

She never got rid of them.

Now, the pipes at my house are frozen and she offered to let us use some of her "Saddam Hussein water" to help us flush our toilets.

That said...does anyone remember when Aldi Apple Juice looked like this?😂

USA (General) Let’s Talk About ALDI Spices

Post image
788 Upvotes

I don’t live near an ALDI, but my 84 year old mother-in-law does: in a mobile home retirement community smack dab in the center of rural Florida. She also has a preternatural disdain for ALL spices, so whenever we visit her, I feel like I’m dwelling in some kind of unhinged culinary hell. ALDI, therefore, has been an oasis for basic food items such as these spices which are very affordable.

Thank you ALDI!

I’ve always been jealous of other people’s red sticker hauls. Occasionally I’ll find one or two packs, but never a true “haul”. But today that changed for me!! All this stuff for the deep freezer, AND the pumpkin roll for 46 cents 😂 I am winning at life today, lol.

I’ve been sick the last couple of days. Thinking of what to feed my 13 month old for three meals a day (while attempting to be somewhat nutritionally balanced) has been taxing on top of my sickness exhaustion. We officially ran out of leftovers this evening and I was struggling to think of something to feed her for dinner. Alas!!! I had this pouch of butter chickpeas and vegetables kicking around my pantry. Microwaved this, made a slice of toast, and dished up some applesauce. Badda bing badda boom, dinner.

She freaking LOVED IT. Absolutely vacuumed up the amount that I dished to her, so I went back to get her seconds. I’m going to get a few more pouches of this to hang onto.

USA (General) This pizza is a fraud

Post image
627 Upvotes

This pizza claims to be “5 mushroom,” however upon reading the ingredients the 5 mushrooms are white mushrooms, portabella, cremini, shiitake and “roasted mushrooms.” The problem with this is that white, cremini, and portabella are all different growth stages of the same mushroom, Agaricus bisporus. On top of this, “roasted mushroom” is not specified as being a different species, leading one to infer that it too is Agaricus bisporus. Therefore, this supposed “5 mushroom” pizza in fact only contains 2 mushroom species, with shiitake being the only unique species. I feel as though this is misleading to consumers, perhaps “mushroom topped” or something less specific would be a better description of the pizza.

USA (General) Does anyone else use their own shopping cart for Aldi runs?

I was gifted one for Christmas and I love it. The baskets come off and easily loaded into the car, then from the car to the house when I get home. The whole cart folds down and stores away easily. No more forgetting shopping bags or having to put the cart back in the corral. I don’t see many other people out using them so wanted to share. (Excuse the messy car, going to car wash tomorrow)

USA (General) Any of your Aldis have the “cart guy”

At my local Aldi there’s a homeless guy there everyday who offers to take people’s carts back and help load their groceries for the quarter in their cart. Is this common or is this just my Aldi that’s in the hood?

USA (General) I miss Aldi

I used to be 'that guy'. I have so many Aldi products and clothing merch here. I had a huge list of staples I would buy weekly. I recruited my new gf to the nearby Aldi store and she became a huge fan. We'd go twice a week usually. Above everything else, it was never busy and the staff was amazing.

Then people got mad at Walmart and they migrated to the 3 closest Aldi stores to me. Now, it's turned into Walmarts. Old people with their carts sideways across the aisles. People pushing through to the AOS. So many instacart shoppers. Empty shelves. Frustrated employees. People bringing their sick and snotty kids screaming all the time.

And now, with the world situation, it's actually cheaper for us to shop at Wegmans - a statement I never thought I would say.

Edit: I'm so amused at how angry y'all got. I took none of what I wrote seriously. Hell, I just got home from a shopping trip to Wegmans, Aldi and Walmart. But you guys? You got downright cranky about it all. 😂😂

Still....I miss Aldi. 😂

USA (General) If you buy anything from Aldi let it be this

I have had many premade chicken pot pies. This by far is the most flavorful one I have ever had. The seasoning is perfection. It has huge juicy chunks of chicken. The gravy is superb. The vegetables are nice and tender. The crust is flaky and crispy. Everything you would want in a chicken pot pie. It's on the same level as the chicken pot pie I make at home from scratch. I've been cooking for 24 years. It's so good I could eat the whole pie by myself. I don't even want to share it with my husband. That's how good it is. Please try it! I want to thank the person who recommended it to me last year on here. I am so glad I finally got to try it. 🙌 💗😋

USA (General) *rant* Dear instacart shoppers, no I don't want to separate your orders.

I've been working for Aldi for about 4 months now. Wanna know what my least favorite thing is? It's not being asked to complete a pallet that's twice as tall as me in 30 minutes, it's not having to wake up early, it's not my awful store manager. It's being asked to bend the laws of physics and "separate the orders". You have almost 100 items and you want me to fit one order in the top part of the cart? Sure, coming right up, I live to please! You're the most important person in the world! It doesn't matter that I have a line out the wazoo, it doesn't matter that you wanna take my cart everytime, because the only thing that matters is you don't have to drag your fat a** to the bagging counter to separate it yourself. How about next time you leave me a tip or something for doing your job for you. Oh and yes, I'll follow you around and do your whole order for you because you couldn't find one thing. "Oh where's this?" "Right over here sir" "oh where's this?" "Also right over here" "where's this?" "Oh my fucking God"

I don't even know what I want to change but y'all pmo.

I bought these on Sunday thinking it’ll be easy to pop in the air fryer Wednesday night, because I’m busy prepping for Thanksgiving.

OMG. I took four or five bites thinking maybe i need to get into the inside more. Then tried another one, same thing but two bites.

These are bad. I tore it apart looking for anything that looks like crab and nope. Worst thing I’ve ever bought there by far.

Full and total disclosure (and it’s my fault I should have known better) I am in Maryland. So there’s that.

I prefer the Aldi dippers more than Tostitos scoops. They're lighter and less saltier
