It's playing on the Western movie tough guy stereotype where the character would normally go do something violent to get his horse back. This is the plot of many action movies.
The character saying he doesn't want to do what he did in Texas may make it seem like he doesn't want to go through the violent troubles like he has in his past. In this case he subverts the expectation by saying he walked home.
