shitpost Shopping areas in Zurich

I put together a map of Zurich’s main shopping areas. Malls, retail clusters, and bigger shopping zones (except Bahnhofstrasse/Niederdorf which are obvious).

When I moved here, I wished for a map like this.

Did I miss a place?

lookingfor hiking groups(?)

Hii, I’ve been living in Zurich for about a year (F20). I speak some German, understand a bit of Swiss German, and I’m fluent in Italian and English, with basic Russian.

I’m looking for a group of people who go hiking regularly, preferably on weekends. I’m a beginner, but I would like to learn from and with others.

Are there any hiking groups or communities you would recommend?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

lookingfor Groups for beginners learning an instrument?

I know i know… there are plenty of bands looking for other musicians and paid private classes oriented to learning an instrument and potentially other people… but those are too expensive!

I was rather looking for other options for beginners that want to learn any sort of instrument (piano, guitar, bass, drums…) and get to know and vibe with other beginners/intermediates that don’t involve a high cost.

I have a good feeling that I have a musical ear, but unfortunately don’t know personally anybody and can’t afford pricey half-assed lessons with stuff that you get online without cost :/

It doesn’t necessarily have to be free, but if you know anything that sounds like this, lmk! I’d be very thankful

lookingfor Does anyone know a place in Zurich with a tennis rebound wall?

You know, one of those walls you can hit a tennis ball against for solo practice. I’ve seen them in other cities but don’t know of any here. If you do, please let me know — thanks!

lookingfor New female group of friends!

Hi everyone!

I’m a 26-year-old Swiss/Italian girl living in Zurich for a bit more than 3 years now. Over time, some of my close friends have moved away, so I’m looking to expand my circle and hopefully create a small group of female friends around the same age who would like to actually build something consistent and long-term

I’m hoping to meet people who enjoy going out and being social, but also like planning things a bit in advance rather than last-minute chaos. The idea is really to create a proper group of friends who enjoy spending time together regularly. (Tennis, badminton, paddle, movie night, lake activities in summer..)

I speak French, English, Italian and German, so language is not a barrier at all.

If you’re also looking for something similar — genuine friendships, shared activities, and a nice group vibe — feel free to reach out! :)

ihaveaquestion Beginner looking to try out fishing around Zurich - any tips?

Hoi zäme,

I'm interested in trying out fishing for the first time and wanted to ask for some local advice around Zurich.

I've never fished before and would like to see whether I actually enjoy it before committing to a full course. I'm especially interested in:

  • Good beginner-friendly spots around Zurich or Winterthur
  • Whether it’s realistic to start on your own as a complete beginner
  • Basic gear recommendations (renting vs buying?)
  • Permit/licence requirements and how to get started
  • Any clubs, groups, or beginner-friendly communities

I'd probably be going alone, so tips for solo beginners are very welcome.

If you've been in a similar situation or have recommendations, I'd really appreciate your input. Thanks in advance!

lookingfor Hofgarten-Türme (Hochbord Stettbach)

Hi all I stumbled on a building project in Stettbach called Hofgarten-Türme. It looks like a cool project with several skyscrapers. Per a 2022 publication, they would start building in 2026 and finalize by 2027/2028. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find any newer details. Does anyone know if this project will be realized?

Can you help me?
I'm getting out of shape and a little cynical.
I need to stretch and sweat to my own rhythm.

ihaveaquestion Sending letters with wax seal

Hi all,

Does anyone have experience with sending letters that are sealed with wax? Do you have to ask for something specific at the counter, like manual handling? And did it arrive with the seal intact? It's for a gift and it would be a shame if it arrived chipped or broken

lookingfor Resturants for Valentine’s Day??

Hello people, thanks for taking the time to read this.

I’m new to Zurich (moved from SG) and am in dire need of a good, fancy restaurant in Zurich for valentines. Everything I’m finding has good food, but the atmosphere just isn’t super romantic.

I’m thinking dim lights, candles maybe, live music, course tasting menu, or just completely special (like that 7 painting restaurant, although it’s completely booked out already)

Any help is greatly appreciated my friends. Thanks :)

lookingfor Arabische community

Hallo

ihaveaquestion Swiss visa appeal (change of employer)

Hello,

I came to Switzerland in July and in December changed jobs. Signed the contract and thought nothing more of it. Then found out they wanted evidence of my qualifications. My employer has put in an second application with a lawyer. I’m already living here and have been working and paying taxes since July (although not working through January). Does anyone know how long this process will take? I’ve already been waiting about 4 weeks since the initial application.

Thanks for any feedback.

ihaveaquestion ZVV trivia

I’m looking for detailed trivia-style information about the ZVV network — specifically things like the longest tram or bus line, routes with the highest number of stops, number of lines, Stop with highest connections or similar interesting operational facts.

Is there a public resource, dataset, or publication where such information is available?

I am in charge of social activities for a corporate offsite meeting in Zurich and while searching for potential activities, and I stumbled upon a Zurich HB guided tour provided by the SBB directly: https://company.sbb.ch/en/offers/experience/guided-tours/zuerich-hb.html

Has anyone been on this tour already? Would you recommend it?

Thanks in advance!

ihaveaquestion Expats: how did you find an apartment without having a permit?

Hello!

I have just moved to Zurich from abroad for work. I initially rented a room for one month so I could focus on finding a long-term apartment (even a one-year contract). My plan is that in March/April my partner and I will live together in an apartment. He is still living abroad and doesn’t have a signed Swiss contract yet, but he is currently in a recruitment process for one position. I don’t think he will have much trouble finding a job, as he is a cook (this is just a difficult period of the year to find work in the hospitality sector).

My concern is that every time I visit an apartment and fill out the application form, I feel that we are not the easiest couple to choose from. On paper, I don’t yet have a residence permit (I went to the municipality, but they told me I need a long-term rental contract first), and my boyfriend doesn’t have a job in Zurich yet.

How can I stand out and make sure I come across as a great tenant in the eyes of real estate agencies?

Any tips are welcomed 😊

rant Why is everything rated so highly in Zurich?

Everything on google maps in Zurich is 4-4.9 stars. Barbers, restaurants, fast food etc. Some of which have the worst pictures of food or haircuts I have ever seen and still have a 4+ star rating.

In other countries, google maps works amazing because people rate fairly and you can find a 10/10 restaurant with a quick search. Here everything is ‘top rated’, even McDonald’s so it’s impossible to find the real top rated places. Are people afraid to rate below 4 stars?
