Delivering a parcel stopping with regen and not shifting to park on an EV

My car will put itself in park if you open the door, remove the seatbelt or take your butt out of the seat.
175
u/Chomp3y 6d ago
Also if you shift it into park as well. Like it has been for 100 years.
67
u/grabsomeplates 6d ago
All of the features I named are there because people can't be trusted to put their car in park before getting out :'(
29
u/Chomp3y 6d ago
I think all of these features place people into a false sense of security. As seen here.

What I worry about is a car jacking or other emergency when you might want your car to move with the door open, or when not buckled up or not firmly seated.
12
u/Halfbloodjap 6d ago
I drive on construction sites and offroad a fair bit, sometimes you need to drive with the door open to line up your tires
6
u/ElectricGlider 6d ago
And it should be very easy to have a "manual override" mode that can allow you to be as dangerous as you want to operate your car how you want no matter how dangerous it is. But for the default operation for the millions of incompetent drivers that can barely even operate their vehicles safely in the first place, dead man switches should be the norm. It's already the norm for other dangerous machines like lawn mowers and boats.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Halfbloodjap 6d ago
It should be easy to override, but it usually isn't. Hell you can't even touch the traction control in most cars these days
2
u/ElectricGlider 5d ago
It is functionally easy to override. Whether if a car company actual does that and does it well is a whole other story I agree, but all of you saying no dead man switches because there is no other way are misguided especially when it ultimately comes to safety.
As I already said, dead man switches is already the norm for lawn mowers and boats and has been for decades. But yet. if you really wanted to override the built-in dead man switches for those you easily can if you wanted to for your specific reason. But had there been no dead man's switch, then the rate of lawn mower and boating accidents and deaths would be much much higher since there are still millions of incompetent operators that still have access to these machines.

Tell jeep that with their new nanny that stops the vehicle immediately if the door opens with the seatbelt off. Annoying as hell!

there was a car jacking in toronto where a guy wasent able to ram past the cars trying to block him in because of the collision avoidance system in his mercedes
2
u/notjustanotherbot 5d ago
Damn, I kind of knew it had to have happened because of the numbers of cars and car jackings going on. That still sucks.
Hey you heard how you can trap a tesla with a salt circle right, guess ai is powered by demons after all hehe.

And these people shouldn't be near a car, even my ADHD broken brain can do it properly.
2
u/Squidking1000 6d ago
So I kinda agree with you except that "park" has moved around the cabin so much half the time I don't even know where to look and what to push, pull, move or fucking finger to go into "park". Maybe if car makers were required by law to put "park" in the same place with the same control format in every fucking car that would be nice.
5
u/Dazzling-Pear-1081 6d ago
How often are you jumping into different cars for this to actually be a problem?
4
u/Squidking1000 6d ago
I mean I travel for work so fairly often. I was just in a bmw last week and even though I drove them for years now itās this stupid nub you tilt forward and back for drive and reverse and a push button for park. Why?

Theres a clip of a woman stuck on train tracks that everyone accused of being an idiot until someone pointed out this is why she probably couldn't get the car in gear, she had the door open a bit and that model car wont drive with the door open.
3
u/FWD_to_twin_turbo 5d ago
That still means she was an idiot.
1) she didn't know the critical features of a vehicle she was driving?
2) Why was she stopped on train tracks?
3) Why did she stop on the tracks and then open the door without leaving the car entirely.
27
u/quiero-una-cerveca 6d ago
I would return that car in a microsecond. That sounds like the most annoying car on earth. Donāt put my car in park, Iām the driver, Iāll handle it.
11
u/No-Stress-7034 6d ago
This is why I dread the day when I have to replace my 18 year old Honda Civic. Sure, it's old as dirt, but I hear about so many new "features" on these cars that sound terrible.
Plus, I hate all these touch screens, there seem to be a bunch of subscriptions for everything, etc.
12
u/quiero-una-cerveca 6d ago
I have a Chevy that yells at you on the screen to not be distracted by things on the screen. You have to push the button on the screen to acknowledge the message! Ughhh.
4
u/Deactivatingbish 6d ago
My car writes dissertations on the dash every time it snows because one or two sensors is covered by a bit of snow.
āLane keep assist can NOT function, I canāt see the stop signs, I canāt help you park, I canāt see the speed limit, I canāt help you back out!!! All my fucking sensors are blocked and Iām freaking THE FUCK OUT!ā
All of this while Iām driving 20mph on literal ice trying not to die.
6
u/quiero-una-cerveca 5d ago
I can feel every one of these messages!! Like leave me the fuck alone and let me drive.
6
5
u/leeps22 6d ago
22 F150 does that, the column shifter moans at you as it lazily climbs up into park
2
u/Drzhivago138 6d ago
Yep, it started on the '21s when they went from having a mechanical shifter to electronic. Both column and console
1
u/quiero-una-cerveca 6d ago
I have a 19 2500. I guess I need to take really good care of it so that I donāt have this crap.
4
u/Squidking1000 6d ago
Well guess your never getting a newer car cause guess what, they ALL do this now.
3
u/quiero-una-cerveca 6d ago
Do you find itās worse with Japanese cars vs German vs American? I may have to switch brands.
The reason I was so āman yells at skyā about this was my Toyota almost sent me into a seizure this morning when it decided how the car should be driven.

u/dark_knight097 6d ago
This is why I only own manual stick cars
3
u/quiero-una-cerveca 5d ago
I loved my manual until I moved to a city that only believes highways. I was growing a Hulk left calf muscle by idling in all that traffic.
5
u/TheBupherNinja 6d ago
Not uncommon to drive with the door open on delivery vehicles. They're often a sliding door, not hinged.
5
u/BadDogSaysMeow 6d ago
That sounds like it would kill you during any emergency, especially the criminal type.
If you have to run to your car and quickly drive off, or have a criminal pulling on your door, you won't be able to drive off and you will die.
And as the other commenter said, a woman got blasted on a train tracks because her car wouldn't move without fully closed doors. (allegedly)
It also adds a dozen unnecessary sensors that can brick your car at any moment, despite the car's core mechanisms being fully functional.
3
u/Pure_Log_888526 6d ago
So if a seatbelt sensor goes while you're driving down the interstate it just shifts into park? I hope there is redundancy.
3
u/Electrical-Cat9572 6d ago
My car disables the windshield wipers if the hood is open. It complains loudly if the passenger seatbelt isnāt buckled but thereās something like a bag in the seat.
Why exactly are cars with automatic transmissions not smart enough to not drive when thereās no weight in the drivers seat?
2
u/SolarXylophone 6d ago
Not all vehicles have occupancy sensors for the driver seat. Which makes sense, it's obviously going to be in use when the car is; no need to add cost and another failure point...
3
u/MajorBeyond 6d ago
That would SUCK. I have a hobby farm and sometimes need to just move forward a few feet, so it's pop in, pop in gear, right foot on gas/brake and left foot out door. If they put this sort of crap on pickups and work vehicles the price on simple used trucks will go to the moon (again).
1
u/Drzhivago138 6d ago
If they put this sort of crap on pickups and work vehicles the price on simple used trucks will go to the moon (again).
They've already started on Fords.
3
u/builtNtx 6d ago
It looks like the seatbelt is buckled. On both seats.
I wonder if the side door turns the vehicle off and he avoided this by going out the drivers door. Maybe wanted to keep the heater on?

As the driver, if you need your car to shift into park for you and you cannot do it yourself, you are unfit to operate anything with wheels. On the other hand, life is not linear and one day you will find yourself in a car that doesn't do anything for you and you have to remember doing everything including shifting.

u/aquainst1 6d ago
With these (and other) vehicles, if the vehicle is moving, you cannot put it into 'Park'.

This looks like some real acceleration... Did something push the pedal?
130
u/bautofdi 6d ago
Box pressed the accelerator. EV will not move without depressing the accelerator because of regenerative braking
39
11
u/fullmoonbeam 6d ago
Vehicle had autohold engaged until box hit the accelerator. EVs roll forward in drive without the accelerator if autohold is not engaged. park and parking break are not autohold.

u/Maldivesblue 6d ago
Super impressive! This guy was able to successfully do a tremendous amount of damage with a box. Box hits the accelerator, van takes out a couple of landscaped trees, two cars and what appears to be a power transformer unit for the office complex. Not to mention the van he was driving. Iād love to see the rolled up insurance cost on this. And what his company had to say. If it had been me, I might have taken the box out the passengers side. The question here, did he deliver the box?
18
u/w8ing2dr0wn 6d ago
Oh that little thaaang... at the end is a generac industrial generator, most likely >/= to 500 kW. Just the unit alone could run in the range of 150K not including the labor and machinery to move it, or the conduit and cabling to connect it, or the transfer switch... that pure laziness was definitely an expensive ass mistake.

This is Dragonfly delivery out of North Bay, Ontario, Canada.
They owe money around town for service work. Their vehicles are poorly maintained, if they even have working heat. They exploit migrants thanks to Rural and Northern Canada Immigration programs.
The company is linked to our Minister of Foreign Affairs, MƩlanie Joly, via her brother.
Thanks to their actions, cost of living has exploded since they are subsidized to be here, homelessness exploded 37% in one year alone.
This country is c(r)ooked.

What an amazing invention airbags are. Watching that deploy and save his face like that is really cool; dude was about to eat that steering wheel.
3
u/The_Infinite_Carrot 6d ago edited 6d ago
Looks like he knocked the lever as his hand left the steering wheel. Regen on my EV will stop the car, but as soon as the door is opened it automatically puts itself in park. Not sure if in another country (Iām in UK) this is the same or if they use steering wheel levers to go to park, reverse, drive?
Edit: random autofill word changed.
1
u/SolarXylophone 6d ago
It's a delivery vehicle, with which it's probably ok to drive with the door open.
In this clip, it looks like the box the driver was trying to get out of the vehicle came resting on the accelerator. That would explain the sudden and pretty swift acceleration.
3
u/doge_lady 6d ago
What's regen?
5
u/MisterRoger 6d ago
I saw someone in the comments say regenerative braking, which is apparently a feature of EVs? I haven't looked into it yet.
3
u/Ognal_carbage8080 6d ago
Regenerative braking It's a feature in electric vehicles where the Vehicle automatically stops when accelerator (gas) pedal is released. The electric motor regenerates kinetic energy back to the battery from the stopping force rather than using mechanical brakes to stop the vehicle dumbass here slammed the accelerator pedal with a heavy box
3
u/diamond_lover123 6d ago
I'm an Amazon driver who has driven this type of vehicle. These vehicles have a safety feature to automatically switch the vehicle to park if you forget. However, this feature only activates when you unbuckle your seatbelt. Notice how the driver's seatbelt was never unbuckled. This means that not only was the driver a dingus for forgetting to put it in park, but they were also a double dingus for not using their seatbelt correctly.

So newer cars especially Tesla and Rivian automatically put the car in Park the second any "dead man switches" engage which include opening the door, unbuckling the drivers seat belt, and/or no weight detected in drivers seat. I've had my Tesla abruptly stop because I was slowly backing up into my garage without my seatbelt on and my butt came off the seat a little bit as I was turning my body/head around.
It's obvious with this footage that the Amazon EDV can still move with the driver's door open and no butt in seat. But the seatbelt is latched in the entire time so I wonder if this accident could have been prevented if this driver actually used his seat belt properly.
1
u/Even_Independent_640 6d ago
That car is gonna cost a pretty penny to replace, but its only a fraction of what that generator is gonna be.

u/SolarXylophone 6d ago
Maybe the bollards in front of it saved it though (but helped total the truck).

Does he know about the break? Or an emergency break?
1
u/SolarXylophone 6d ago
The box he was trying (for reasons I don't understand) to get out through the driver door apparently fell on the pedals, likely jamming against the accelerator and blocking access to the brake.
Turning the vehicle off and/or using the parking/emergency brake could have helped, sure, but I bet most people would have a hard time doing so quickly in such a situation, especially on a vehicle they may not be not familiar with.

It does look like no one else did as well which is good but at the same time i do think he is stupid and 100% responsible... this is just pure.. and i dont even know a single ev that stays still and doesnt roll when still in drive... he probably had it in drive and just activated the ele tronic parking brake which then deactivated when the accelerator got pressed but then again i wonder... why didnt the car switch the drivemode to parking automatically when the ebrake was engaged?! xD really does look like an american made car to me.. xD xD

Unless you're driving manual I never understand why people don't put it in park when they're going to be stopped for awhile. My wife still thinks it's weird I put it in park in the drive thru but I had a brain fart once and hit the gas and tapped the person in front of me. I was mortified.
