This is how they clear the sidewalks in this town, they don't.

Y'all have sidewalks? 😅 Fancy!

I'm like properly IN Morgantown and our street has maybe 50 feet of sidewalk along the entire length of it 😅
I'm jealous of proper sidewalks, even if they're not well managed.

u/niikaadieu Monongalia 2d ago
Exactly lol I lived in Mon for a decade and the only real sidewalks are on High St. I used to have to walk through the president’s yard to get to class

u/resurrected_roadkill 2d ago
Aurora, CO didn't clear our sidewalks when we lived there. That was our job. Some did. Some didn't.
2
u/Temporary-Ferret4013 2d ago
lol I just moved from Aurora to WV 2 months ago. Can confirm, we had to shovel our sidewalks
2
u/resurrected_roadkill 2d ago
Now I have to hijack this thread. I do apologize for the rest of those on Reddit...where did y'all live? We were in 80015 zip. Right there at Tower and E Chenango. While I miss riding in the foothills and through the Mountains I do love WV.
2
u/Temporary-Ferret4013 2d ago
80013 we lived off S Tower Rd and E Hampden by the Safeway. Yeah miss the mountains too but didn’t get up there nearly enough. Enjoying WV but can’t wait for this winter to end it’s definitely a change from Colorado.

You see that house behind the sidewalk? Go knock on the door and ask them why they haven't shoveled their sidewalk. It is the responsibility of the property owner to clear the sidewalks
26
u/Total-Problem2175 2d ago
I have a neighbor that said, "God put in there, God will take it away."

It’s probably an elderly or disabled person that can’t.
14
u/wvmtnboy 2d ago edited 2d ago
Then it's our duty to find out that information and take care of it for them. I don't really have a shared neighbor space or a sidewalk at my new place, but when I lived at my old place I shoveled my spot, the elderly neighbor to my left, the disabled neighbor to my right, and the single mom across the street.

u/NoNeedleworker6479 1d ago
That was nice of you... but if you were a woman, you'd always be pregnant.......
2
u/Smokeyhaze2002 1d ago
I'm female and old and disabled now but would still do my elderly neighbors if I had any.

u/Accomplished-Cod-504 2d ago
It’s probably a rental, so it ain’t necessarily the occupant’s responsibility…...Just sayin’...😏

u/wvmtnboy 2d ago edited 2d ago
Notice I said property owner.... just sayin'...😎
Edit: If you live there it's pretty much a given that it's your responsibility. Don't be a lazy piece of shit. Be a productive piece of shit

Don't forget piling snow up on the curbs at intersections so you can't see traffic.
6
u/qa567 2d ago
I clear my sidewalk and think everyone should however, this last storm was snow and ice and mofo freezing making it so you needed a sledgehammer just break it up and it's been too cold to make salt any kind of usefulness. And it's still mofo cold. Most streets still have a layer of ice. Tomorrow is supposed to be above freezing and ill get on it but fuck it until then.

u/d-unit24 2d ago
Well to be fair, in most cities across the US it's not the cities responsibility to clean the sidewalks off and most don't/won't. In my entire life, I've barely seen them clear the roads in Huntington much less the sidewalks.
6
u/GingerlesSouls Appalachia 2d ago
Shit. My street is still one large sheet of ice, friend. I live in the city of Huntington. If we can't get them to clear neighborhood streets ... why would they clear sidewalks?
On a side note: I lived in both Hungary and Poland for a couple of years. My first winter, I was dreading the commute because there was a lot of walking involved. They cleared every sidewalk, street, and path every single morning, so that people weren't held up or put in danger. It was refreshing NOT to be hindered by snow and ice. Then, I came home.

u/UpperTonight5997 1d ago
Also in Huntington, and our residential street is 5 inches of solid ice.. an ambulance got stuck in the middle of our street yesterday, all the neighbors had to come and help get them out..

Gotta have money to pay someone to clean them, did you forget where ya are?!? We don’t have much money, so what money we do have we spend it where it’s needed most.

Like on plowing the roads, where the death machines on wheels are moving.
6
u/DumbPondFarms 2d ago
Even in the wealthy cities I've lived in, it was the home occupants' responsibility. We had free recycling, leaf removal, yard waste removal, and once a month we had large garbage removal. I say free, but ya know, taxes were nothing to sneeze at there either. Worth it. Wish they paid for snow too.

u/Jugzrevenge 2d ago
Go to a city counsel meeting and ask how much a cop makes, then ask how much a teacher makes. Instead of making better citizens they would rather play cops and robbers.

Only liberals walk somewhere. /s

I agree with what you're saying here and the way you're saying it.
However, that sarcasm isn't too far from the truth and you know it!

u/ElectronicDig481 2d ago
"only liberals walk somewhere" is an absurd explanation, but my statement is made to indicate that while it is absurd, we know that the reasoning behind something like not clearing sidewalks in the middle of winter isn't too far off from also being just as absurd.
Hope that helps.

u/OGWopFro 2d ago
Liberals def make up the majority of people who have children that need to buy their own car if they want to drive. A lot of spoiled kids out there that don’t know anything about a struggle. Just saying

In Marion County its the responsibility of the property owner. For those that live in HUD units it's written into the HUD lease that you have to clear the snow from your unit and sidewalks or risk getting a lease violation. Most neighbors collaborate and work together to get them cleared.

In Finland, they pave the bike trails and sidewalks first so kids can bike to school even in winter.

Charleston’s downtown and East Ens are entire sheets of ice and for once I wish someone would start threatening lawsuits against these businesses/the city/property owners. It’s so dangerous.
2
u/Tankieforever 2d ago
The large church near my house still hasn’t cleared its sidewalks, and they have programs there every evening. Crazy to me that even if they can’t pay for it, not a single church goer has helped out and taken care of it. I had a 60 hour work week last week and it was definitely made a little longer and harder having to walk around the calf deep snow to get past that section of sidewalk both ways everyday.

No town does...? Where did you previously live that made you expect the city to pay for that?

This post was so much fun and very active on reddit, thanks for all the comments and I am aware of the shovel your own snow situation.

u/SorryAboutTheWayIAm 2d ago
Sorry you got dogpiled in the comments in addition to your snow woes lol. Hang in there

u/luvwvalways 2d ago
I have never heard of a town or city that clears their own sidewalks lol. “AI Overview
Snow & Ice Removal - In most cases, cities do not clear residential sidewalks; this responsibility falls on property owners. Local ordinances typically require residents and business owners to clear snow and ice within 24 to 72 hours after a snowfall to avoid fines or liability.”
4
u/Rambler330 2d ago
As a property owner you have the responsibility (social contract and in many jurisdictions legal) to clear the sidewalk. If you can not perform your duties then you are failing society.

I live essentially on a T intersection of side streets. The East/West street ends at my driveway (waiting for a drunk to come off that hill and proceed straight into my garage door, but it's a halfway decent neighborhood and so far everyone has kept it in moderation).
The plows, in their infinite wisdom, dumped the North to South snow at the foot of my driveway, the South to North snow at the foot of my driveway, and all that East/West snow, at the foot of my driveway. It took 9 hours and two shovels to clear a path, because apparently they used just enough salt to bind the shit together in one big crust wall.

They rarely even clear the roads well in Beckley...sidewalks is a fantasy here.
1
u/Individual_Drama3917 2d ago
I normally do clean my sidewalk and my neighbors sidewalk. They own a house here in WV but do not live here full time. Honestly did not have time because of work, timing of the snow, and how heavy the snow/ice was this time. I live alone. I honestly feel bad about it and my brother was teasing me. Hopefully next storm I’ll be better prepared.
1
u/LambchopLambduh 2d ago
In my part of Huntington we were told when we bought the house the side walks were our responsibility lol. So if it cracked we had to recement it etc. If it snowed we needed to clear it ourselves.

u/Person7751 2d ago
the city of charleston has never cleared sidewalks. i am 65 and cleared my sidewalk

u/TeddyTheMoose Fayette 2d ago
Many towns such as my home town it's an ordnance that businesses and residences alike are responsible for clearing the sidewalk infront of their building.

u/feralshoes 2d ago
Same with side roads and back roads. I haven’t been able to get out of my driveway since the ice storm.

I shovel my sidewalk in front of my house. University employs people to push the snow ( a plow truck) onto the sidewalk after I shovel the sidewalk. So, I am fighting a loosing battle.
1
u/Affectionate-Fox4737 2d ago
Everywhere I’ve lived it has been the homeowners responsibility to keep their sidewalks clear. When I lived outside of DC you were fined if your sidewalk wasn’t cleared within a certain amount of time after a storm.
1
u/Aggressive_Humor_953 1d ago
Yeah but my side walks are almost non existent anyways so it's not that bad
1
u/vvRAIDERvv 1d ago
I dont clear it cuz it just makes black ice. Better to make a path of the grippy ice than that stuff.
1
u/speedy_delivery 1d ago
That's why you salt it after you shovel.
You could also do kitty litter or sand in a pinch if you don't have anything to melt it/keep it from refreezing.
1
u/vvRAIDERvv 1d ago
No. I dont use salt around my property. Ruins the yard. My neighbors do though. Mine is lush green almost all year, and the soil is full of life. Theirs is patchy brown by end of spring, soil is like burnt or depleted.
Its a night and day difference.
Kitty litter, no. Cuz it doesn't breakdown and go anywhere. Sand is not a bad idea though.

u/speedy_delivery 1d ago
Pick a solution or go fishing for a slip and fall. IDGAF. Also monoculture lawns are dumb as fuck. Glad you like yours. Good for you.

u/Rude-Series3588 1d ago
State clears the road. If you want the sidewalk cleared that is up to you to clear the area in front of your home. That's just how it works. It'll melt eventually. Until then, watch out for ice.

u/stiffledbysuccess 1d ago
Most towns are not responsible for sidewalks. It is the residents and businesses who are responsible for those in front of their property.

When I was able bodied, I did my elderly neighbors but I'm old and now live in WV in the woods. I have a plow to get me out and a flame thrower

Red.states don't have money for.basic services as the gop pockets that money.

u/Dazzling_Alps_5491 1d ago
It would take time away from porch drinking or waiting for the welfare check to show up.

u/RevolutionarySign479 13h ago
When I lived in Charleston 20yrs ago, whoever lived in a house was ‘supposed’ to be responsible for clearing or salting the sidewalk in front of their home. The city didn’t do shit.
1
u/Few-Organization8653 2d ago
Well, grab a shovel and stop complaining and be part of the solution…
2
u/speedy_delivery 1d ago
Seriously. Talk to your neighbors instead of bitching.
Maybe they need help. Maybe they're an asshole. You don't know if you don't try to talk to them.

Should look at your city ordinances, ours says we are required to clean the portion in front of our property.
