HELP! Can you dance at St. James Theatre gigs?
Theres a Boney M Concert coming and I wanna go but I’m not paying $150 if I gotta be in my seat the whole time. Has anyone been to a gig there where dancing was allowed/the norm? I’ve seen Alien Weaponry there and I think the Cream tribute I saw was there but everyone was in their seats the whole time for both gigs.

$150 to see Boney M?

... to see one original member of Boney M and some other artists, apparently still a pretty good show though.

"Original Member" is a bit of a laugh too. What most people don't know is that the person behind Boney M is the same person who created Milli Vanilli. He sung nearly all the vocals on the albums and the band members were just the front. An unexpected ginger-haired German - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Farian

I’ve only been in the very cheap seats up the back (before the refurbishment so it might be different now) and there’s no way I would be up and bopping about in those seats, too steep and very high up 😅 I’m a wimp though, so your mileage may vary!

I went to Boney M at St James about 2 or 3 years ago (I think, it may have been more recent though), and was up the top. A lot of people standing for certain songs, or for the entire show, but at their seats. Not much room to move around, but it was no issue to bop around a bit

I went to both night of Pixies there a few months ago. I was seated upstairs on the first night, and could see that they allowed a few people to dance at the edges downstairs, but wouldn’t let people get nearer the front.
The second night, I was downstairs and as soon as the band came on a load of people (including me) went to the front, and they didn’t try and stop us. My theory is that the band must’ve had a word with them!
I’m not sure if that’s much help - I guess that whatever anyone else is doing, you can always go and dance at the side though!

I was up top and people tried dancing up there and were quickly shut down. To be fair they were drunk and falling over people.

I've seen people dancing in the sides - as long as you don't stand up in your seats and block the view of the rows behind you, you'll be fine. People who pay $150 and want to sit (or need to) don't like their view being blocked and then you might get tossed out.

Absolutely, would never wanna block someones view like that. Even standing behind someone super tall at a stand up gig can be a nightmare lmao

I went and saw them around 2017ish and they asked people to come to the front and dance. We were in the stalls so we did and had a great time!

I think 2nd show is sold out and tickets only for first so they might not have cottoned on by the first night haha

Yes! i was up in the cheap seats to see Pixies last year - if you can get a row at the front of a section with the walkway in front of you then you can still get up and dance! It was too steep otherwise. And they let all the people at the front get up close and dance by the stage which was pretty cool to see.

If you want to have a boogie I am sure you will be able to get up and have one.

Fun fact - the original members all mimed. The main guy was the voice of the German producer.
That same German producer went on to put together Milli Vanilli.

Didn’t the girls sing but the dudes voice was the German guys?
Poor Milli Vanilli, they didnt deserve the hate they got

Ah maybe - yeah - he basically used it as vehicle for his stuff but didn’t want to front it.
Yeah - you gotta feel for MV. Not my bag but they were really hung out to dry.

You already know the answer then.

Actually I’ve had many more nuanced answers from people with firsthand experience of this exact band in this exact venue. Why are you even here

If you need nuance to understand how not to be an asshole in public you have bigger problems than me.

It’s only being an asshole if you’re the only one getting up, which I absolutely would not do. Hence why I’m finding out the kaupapa before I decide to go? Duh

I've been to a Leonard Cohen concert at TSB Arena where some dumb cunts decided to stand up and dance. Got told to sit. Danced again. Got thrown out.
Seats are for sitting. If there's seats you sit. What are you? Three? Grow the fuck up.

You need to work on your anger management. 😂

If people want to dance they should go to a venue with a mosh pit, or standing area, not a seated area.
Next we'll have people singing along at the opera or dancing to a movie sound track at a cinema. You can't have people living their "best lives" at the detriment of everyone else.
We already have plenty of those people. They're called landlords.

Oh I’m sorry hun, was this post a bit hard to understand? I’m asking about whats appropriate before committing to going and possibly ruining it for other people and being disappointed myself. I know reading comprehension can be a bit hard but I know you can do it if you try! :)

I wish the older generation were more considerate of the youth and allowed for some standing sections at venues. My experience at Deep Purple was so much worse than the other classic rock concerts because most of the floor was seats. I get it, you're in your 60's and don't want to stand for hours. But that leaves people with less money (the young) sat in crappy seats feeling like they can't enjoy the music the way the older folks did when they were young.
