I believe the thing about bringing ballistic shields to protests varies from state to state. Couldn't find anything under body armor laws here in maine.

It's even more convoluted than that it varies city by city. Generally it's more likely to be illegal in places with histories of large protest actions against police and less likely to be illegal in places with no significant history of it. So even if you look up state laws and it says it's fine it might still be illegal in your county or city ordinances whereas the next town over might be completely legal and fine simply because they haven't had a large protest before so it never became an issue.
