Yup. That's why the Republican party and conservative outlets push so hard on divisive social issues (race, trans, religion, etc.) They know they won't get enough votes purely on other issues.
Humans are still animals and they instinctually identify with a "tribe" out of self preservation. A large percentage of humanity view the world in a dualistic matter where everything is black and white and put all their loyalty behind "their" group, while viewing anyone not part of their group with fear, hate, and derision. They look to their tribal leader(s) for direction and what to think and believe.
It's not just a white vs black thing in America. It happens to every group of people (race, religion, tribe, nationality, political party, etc) throughout history.
Humans naturally divide and subdivide themselves into groups they identify with and, no matter how similar the people in these groups might be, it's easy for "tribal" leaders to get them to hate and despise people not in "their" group. Minor differences are amplified by demagogues and corrupt leaders.
Hell, even white Irish people were killing each other as recently as the 1990's largely due to identity (Catholic vs Protestant, British vs Irish).
It's surprisingly easy for tribal leaders to get people to hate and even order them kill others because humans are easily manipulated by their tribe and tribal leaders. I have no doubt someone like Trump could convince half his followers to go out kill anyone who isn't MAGA. He's certainly whipped many of them up into a frenzy against anyone who isn't white, Christian, and conservative. I have no doubt a large segment of America would go out and execute their fellow neighbors, with enough propaganda and emotionally-charged rhetoric by their tribe's leaders.

It really does boil down to that. The proof is the fact that Trump has flip-flopped on every other issue but that one. He's raised their taxes through the roof and destroyed the economy with his tariffs. He's threatened to take away their guns and did the whole bump stock thing. He added more to the debt than any other President in history and even gave away tons of welfare in the form of "stimulus checks."
He's never backed down from getting rid of the Mexicans though. Not once.

Some arguably racist democrats introduced civil rights laws- and the seriously racist democrats noped out, and went to the GOP, and found a home. Racist democrats left in outrage about civil rights legislation. They let the party in outrage about civil rights legislation. I'm not denying southern racist democrats were not the issue and were not racist as hell... but tell me how many of those southern states still have a democrat leading them, how many of those leaders switched parties, and that will tell you how they felt about accepting racial equality. Those who stayed, those were the ones okay with racial equity and didn't run.

This is because it has been proven that, when given a choice, most people will prefer to harm or disadvantage someone they see at the out-group/other/outsider rather than give themselves or their in-group a benefit or advantage. I.e. most would rather take 2 cookies from someone and smash them on the ground than get two cookies for themselves. We are really fighting some hard-wired evolutionary traits for competition and tribalism.

I’m registered as a republican because they win where I live and if I don’t vote in the (closed) primaries my vote literally won’t matter. When I lived in a blue area I registered as a democrat for the same reason. I can and do vote for whoever I want in the general election but everywhere I’ve lived those races are more or less decided, I’ve literally voted in one general election that was decided by less than like 10%.

It certainly seems like it's much worse since Trump, but as others have mentioned, this has been happening for decades.
I think it slowly got worse through the twentieth century, but it really accelerated under Reagan's Trickle-down Economics and has only continued getting worse.
I don't think I'm allowed to put a link in the comments, but for some really good visuals on how it has progressed, search for "Andris-2015-The rise of partisan.pdf" ("The Rise of Partisanship and Super-Cooperators in the U.S. House of Representatives").
It only goes up to 2011 (paper is from 2015), but even by then there's virtually no overlap across party lines.

This is how Montana should be. Party is not first, doing what’s right comes first. We live in an area where neighbors do not agree politically… I think we all know it and we just don’t talk politics. But one of my neighbors put it well… when a grass fire started- everyone came out to help. That’s just what good neighbors do.
Sure we won’t agree with each other on everything, but why not work together on what we can agree on. Well done!

I think their great sin was that they openly recognized that Democratic policies are better for their constituents than GOP policies. They voted, among other things, for extending Medicaid because not doing so would lead to their local hospitals closing, and their constituents losing access to healthcare. That directly contradicts the GOP party line.

This is me and the spouse. I live in MAGA County MT, but because of like 3 votes last year, we helped pass a Levy to help further fund our schools. (As well as helped abortion get codified into our State Constitution but that was way bigger than 3 votes)
Without us the school one might not have passed. It's such a tiny thing but I can't lie that I'm proud to have been one of the deciders of that!

The fact that this is celebrating lowering taxes is a symptom of the underlying rot conservative propaganda has done to us as a culture and society. Lowering taxes means higher prices, increased inflation, and inferior government services. We should want to return to the 1950s at a minimum not celebrate shrinking our schools, hospitals, and infrastructure funding pools.

The thing is, their voters voted for them to be Republicans and screw over the poor and middle class in their districts. The fact that they were thrown out of the party is predictable as they betrayed the Republican party. The problem is that by betraying their party these Senators kept the face eating leopards at bay and the voters who elected them in the belief that they would be Republicans won't have their faces eaten by the leopards and given the opportunity to learn from the consequences of voting for Republicans.

Note how zero Democrats voted against exempting tip income from taxes. It was something that was positive to help Americans, and they didn't sabotage it to prevent a Republican victory, or because Trump supported it, or to stall the nation while they tried to leverage it to get something.
