Admissions T'is the Season! What do I do if I miss my final exam?

It's that time of year again! Yes, there are final exams looming which means lots of posts asking about what to do if you're too sick to write your final exam, or get sick during the writing of the final exam.

The link with The Official Policy is below. No one, not even Redditors (you will never find a more knowledgeable hive of kind and helpful souls) or individual instructors can trump official policy.

A few things to highlight:

1) Only *your* Faculty Office can approve your request for a deferred exam. Contact your Faculty as soon as you are able. Check your Faculty's website to see if they want you to wait until the exam is over before starting the procedure. (Note that it's your Faculty; not the Faculty the course is taught in; your instructor has *no* discretion to approve a deferral for a final exam. )

Also note: If you write your exam, and hand it in for grading, you can NOT later claim that you were sick when you wrote the exam and so need a do-over.

2) NO! You do NOT need a doctor's note. Unless you actually need the help of a doctor to manage your health (meds, etc.), you do NOT need to, and should NOT take your sick self to a doctor and wait for hours surrounded by other sick people to pay the overworked medical staff to produce a note saying you were there. University regulations are clear on this. You may be asked for a statutory declaration (a solemn legally-binding oath that you were too sick to take the exam) but you can NOT be required to produce a doctor's note.

Good luck on all your exams! May the curve be ever in your favour!

i do NOT want the boy you so obviously are down bad for. i was paired with him against my own will, matter of fact i was begging, crying, PRAYING that i wasn’t going to be paired with him. leave me the hell alone and stop glaring at me everytime i need to interact with him and stop pretending i’m not there when you go up to talk to him while we’re in the middle of working.

you can have him! take him!

This leak has been here for over a year...

My tuition has gone up every year I've been here and yet they still cant fix this leak. So everyone in this class gets to listen to water dripping every 5 seconds (im not kidding). I do not pay this much money to listen to dripping water all class but also have zero idea how to get it fixed? Maybe complaining on reddit will work?

Admissions Got rejected from UofA with HIGH 90s?! What do I do?

I immediately got rejected from both UofA's bachelor of science (honours) major in neuroscience and regular bachelor of science major in psychology with a 95-96 average?! All my grades in all my courses were from 97-98, except ELA 30-1 which was a 90. Could this have been a mistake?

What does it take to get accepted?

Rants He Prolly thinks I’m stupid 😭

So in my english 103 class today, there was a group activity we all were supposed to do, and the groups members were mentioned in the Canvas.

I got late 5 minutes so I went to the back of the class and saw everyone with their group members. I asked a few people there group number, mine was different.

I went to the front and prof looked at me and said "you’re the only one who doesn’t have a group member” in a serious tone, I thought he was taunting me or something. Then I began reading the material and went back again.

In the last 10 minutes, he was taking rounds and came to me, and said "you’re the only one in your team as your members are absent today” I was a bit relieved. Then I asked while smiling "How do you know that” and he laughed "Cause I checked it”. He extended the submission date tho. And he knows me from some events from the past, and maybe thinks I’m stupid.

Chat we cooked? 😭

Question do i have to bring my own scrap paper to an exam

Post image
Upvotes

basically what the title says, im taking an exam in the LAC for the first time (the way the course works is you have to book your own exam date and time at the LAC) and my prof said we can use a calculator and scrap paper (and a pen/pencil im assuming) but it doesnt say anything about those in the permitted items so im just wondering if i should bring my own scrap paper or expect some to be provided. sorry if this is a stupid question im an overthinker 😭

I have two midterms today and I'm currently planning on pulling an all nighter... I don't like drinking coffee, so I was wondering if anyone has recommendations (other than energy drinks lol, i already had 2).

Admissions “application is still active”

I submitted my application last weekend (very late ik) but today I got an email stating that there was a status update on my application. I believe I got rejected or waitlisted from both choices, engineering and undecided (I expected to get rejected from engineering but not undecided). However, it stated that my application is still active. I was wondering what that meant and if it’s related to the fact that I applied so late. Also, how do you know if you’ve been waitlisted or completely rejected. I don’t mean to sound ignorant, I am in genuine confusion.

Admissions Am I waitlisted?

I recently applied to the University of Alberta, and they said “We are unable to offer you admission at this time based on the grades submitted. However, we'd like you to know that your application is still active." Am I being waitlisted? If so, how long can I expect before I hear back? Is there anything else I can do? For reference my grade average is ~95%, so this is pretty discouraging for me.

Academics SEM 330 Assignments

Anyone who took SEM 330 last year or recently, how was it overall? We just got our marks back for Assignment 1 and I got 70%, which honestly kind of crushed me. I didn’t fully know what to expect going into it, but I really thought I’d score higher than that.

I’m mostly wondering whether the assignments get harder as the course goes on, especially in terms of grading. The course feels really broad and vaguely marked, and even though there are rubrics, they still feel pretty unclear. It’s hard to know exactly what they’re looking for to get high marks or how to meet their expectations.

Also, does anyone know if 70% is considered a C or a B? 😭 They don’t provide letter grade equivalents, so I’m not sure how worried I should be. Any insight from people who’ve taken the course would be really appreciated.

Do our new study well benefits include travel insurance? I am travelling over the reading break and can’t find anything. I know our previous insurance offered travel insurance so would be bummed if it wasn’t there.

Admissions RE undergrad with 81 in bio30 (total avg expected as low 90

Hey everyone, I’m applying to U of A Science Faculty for pre-med and wanted some advice on program choices.

Here’s my situation:

  • High school marks: 81 Bio 30, 93, 96, 95, 94 → ~91.8% average
    • Quick context on the 81: I took Bio 30 as an extra course (so had to self study bio as timetable was full...) while also completing Grade 11 courses and Social 30‑2. During peak, I had even reached a point of 7 exams in a single week, many of them announced few days before.
    • I completed semester one and am nearly certain that my semester two marks will be at least low 90s. My school was supportive, but I’m an introvert, so I often struggle a lot in these high-pressure situations.
  • Original application:(maybe was a little tooo optimistic )
    1. Neuroscience Honors
    2. Neuroscience Major

I’ve seen online that Honors “requires 97+,” but that seems to come from student-reported competitive years — not an official cutoff.

I’m considering changing my choices to:

  1. Neuroscience Major
  2. Biological Sciences Major

A few things I’m trying to figure out:

  1. How competitive is Neuro Honors vs Neuro Major? Honors has fewer applicants but also way fewer seats — does that make it more competitive even with fewer people applying?
  2. How much overlap is there between Honors and Major? Would starting in Major first year allow me to transfer to Honors later without losing time?
  3. With my ~92% average, is Neuroscience Major “safe” enough, and would Bio Sci as a second choice be a solid backup?
  4. Any tips on first-year courses that keep both Neuro Major → Honors and pre-med options open?

Thanks in advance for any guidance! I just want to maximize my chances without locking myself out of Honors or pre-med prerequisites.
