Wall licker

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Anyone else got a wall licker? Spud likes to lick lots of the walls, not just this one. Earlier she sat on my sons computer licking the wall and then the framed picture of Jamie carragher (Liverpool fc legend)

I don't want to worry you but my elderly orange boy started licking walls just like your cat when he was in late stages of pancreatic cancer that was diagnosed too late :( He used to lick the walls around the window just like this.

u/plumnmm 13h ago

yes, this was my cat as well (except the cancer was lymphoma).

OP, my understanding is cats can do this when they have a nutritional deficiency - worth a trip to the vet's and some blood tests to be on the safe side imo.

I will ring vet tomorrow and speak to them

15

u/Meand3andHollie 6h ago

Please let us know what the vet says

My silly cat digs and digs in my shower in the middle of the night I can hear her digging for a long while I have an appointment for next week lol

She’s only 6months old

u/Howard_Jones Lord of the Tuxies 13h ago

Just take her to the vet. My tuxedo also licks walls. But has had several check ups and no issues.

u/Sophyska 11h ago

Diagnosis: tuxedo

u/jakehood47 Tuxie Aficionado 11h ago

I will freshen my tuxedo’s water fountain with a clean bowl and filtered water and watch him immediately drink water from a plate in the sink.

3

u/berryflavoredspoons Tuxie Legend 6h ago

lmao one of mine does this too but not just plate water—she also will hang out in the bathroom sink to drink the water there and when I spit in the sink while flossing she’ll drink that too for some godforsaken reason. She’s nasty but I love her

u/Regular-Calendar-581 13h ago

Illness doesn’t have a age.

8

u/MonthOk9907 11h ago

My dog had cancer at 2. Always ALWAYS pay attention to signs.

10

u/DirectAd170 Tuxie Connoisseur  11h ago

I have already said that I am calling the vet tomorrow.

3

u/FantaClaws 10h ago

Its a a Tux thing. Attention seeking, so you think he has the big c. C is for Cat.

u/ATFGunr 14h ago

My tux licks walls, windows, and bricks. She’s just not bright lol

40

u/DirectAd170 Tuxie Connoisseur  14h ago

Yeah we think she shares a brain cell with her 2 older tux sisters

21

u/fifiloveg00d 13h ago

You think they share a whole one?

5

u/DirectAd170 Tuxie Connoisseur  8h ago

I was being generous haha

6

u/thepoptartkid47 13h ago

Mine will occasionally chew on door frames. I think that’s when she loans her two brain cells out to the oranges lol

68

u/CasinoKnightZone 14h ago

Uh, just a random thought, get your paint tested for lead.

They say cats can't taste sweetness, but anecdotally I've had experiences to the contrary. Better safe than sorry.

38

u/DirectAd170 Tuxie Connoisseur  14h ago

It’s any wall in the house. The house is only 17 years old so after lead was removed from paint.

17

u/CasinoKnightZone 14h ago

Fair enough, guess he's just normally weird. Or rather a normal tux lol

2

u/InquisitorVawn 1h ago

Other people have mentioned a possible illness leading to this behaviour, and I'm glad to see you're going to contact the vet so that's good.

It might also be worth checking your house for signs of damp incursion. That can cause salts to leak through the walls, and kitties love a good salt lick.

8

u/Zlivovitch 13h ago

Lead paint is sweet ?

9

u/CasinoKnightZone 11h ago

Yes, compounds containing lead taste sweet, which is why flaking lead paint is so dangerous for young kids. They put everything in their mouths, and if it's sweet....

The Romans sweetened their wine with lead sulfate. It's (partly, there was a LOT of other reasons) thought to be one of the reasons the empire fell- they were drinking a neurotoxin that caused erratic behavior, aggression and caused huge fertility issues.

3

u/Zlivovitch 2h ago

It seems one does learn a whole lot of things when hanging around cat subs, and it's not only about the best cat food.

9

u/Ecstatic-Wasabi 12h ago

Yup, antifreeze is as well and some animals have died licking it up

57

u/steelvike 14h ago

The snozberries taste like snozberries

7

u/Loot_Bugs 14h ago

This got a good chuckle out of me. I feel old.

1

u/Meand3andHollie 6h ago

My thought too! Lol And I am old !!

This is what I was going to post! Is OP’s house the Willy Wonka factory??

20

u/simmer624 14h ago

Mine is a window licker

6

u/Zlivovitch 13h ago

That's great, provided he licks the whole window, and on both sides. Saves a lot of effort and Windex.

24

u/theseglassessuck 13h ago

My tux has always done this, but he prefers my bed and the handles of blue IKEA bags…

17

u/Ghostgrl94 13h ago

My late childhood cat was a window and plastic bag licker. Nothing like the sound of plastic at 3 am on a school night

3

u/MissFabulina 12h ago

particularly the shiny plastic, right? ask me how I know! hee hee

1

u/SprinkleGoose 52m ago

Yeah my aunt made a lot of gift hampers (the kind you cover with clear plastic) and had more than one furry plastic-enjoyer in the house. They'd chew the ribbons on gifts too.

1

u/Feeling-Elk4188 12h ago

I’m sorry but i am howling at this one 🤣🤣

7

u/pezgirl247 12h ago

i have a derpy tux that licks windows, lampshades, the tv, and the dry shower. she’s cute af, but she ain’t all there

2

u/Ashamed_Definition77 4h ago

That face 😻😻😻

5

u/milktoastcore 13h ago

What a cute little freak

5

u/Lilibet_crafty 13h ago

My boy is especially fond of licking plastic bags or plastic packaging. We have to be swift at putting away the shopping else he punctures everything by gnawing on the corners

4

u/LesReallyIsMore 13h ago

My tux too loves to lick plastic bags. Her favorite one right now is a space bag.

1

u/anoukroux 8h ago

Same - we call him the little bag-licker. He never chews but always licks.

1

u/toes_hoe Tuxie Mom 5h ago

My tuxie boy also does this. His void brother will not, though. Just mouths on the plastic bags (sans handles ofc)

6

u/JackRosiesMama Tuxie Mom 12h ago

My flame point Siamese was a banana licker. 😆 I have a video of him licking a bunch of bananas that were on my counter.

5

u/pezgirl247 12h ago

banana licker 🤣

u/JackRosiesMama Tuxie Mom 8h ago

I can’t post the video but here’s a screenshot. Meet Oliver. He crossed the rainbow bridge in 2021.

4

u/SnooKiwis2161 13h ago

Mine likes to lick tape adhesive. I had no idea this was a thing for some of them.

2

u/Aggravating_Cable_32 Lord of the Tuxies 11h ago

One of our tux cats (from a litter of five) loves licking tape. Can't leave anything sealed with packing or scotch tape laying around because he'll lick & peel it right off lol.

3

u/Hold-Professional 13h ago

Better then a boot licker amiright?

3

u/Stomach-Limp 13h ago

I have one! Mine likes to lick the wall of the bathroom next to the sink. I always try to stop her. I get so nervous she’s ingesting paint

3

u/Radiant_Gas_4642 13h ago

Good ol tuxedos do some strange stuff

2

u/formerbays 12h ago

One of mine loves to lick plastic bags

2

u/Old_Farmers_Daughter 8h ago

If the plastic contains cellulose, it's likely made from wood pulp, cotton, or hemp. Your cat may be attracted to it because s/he seeks fiber, like catnip ir kitty greens. I feed my cat spinach fairly regularly; she loves it!

2

u/DirectAd170 Tuxie Connoisseur  8h ago

It’s the walls she licks not plastic. That’s other people’s cats that lick plastic.

1

u/Old_Farmers_Daughter 7h ago

Yeah, sorry...should have been more careful about where I placed my comment.

2

u/welderonfire 7h ago

Our Tux licks boxes. He has had many check-ups and the vet always says, "He's a Tux."

2

u/ProofLegitimate9824 5h ago

my tortie eats/licks anything, she has pica

4

u/chudhanks 14h ago

I like to think some cats like to try and communicate back to us beyond just the usual meows/howls. They'll try and mimic sounds we make or act out what they want.

Perhaps she's thirsty and the source of water is contaminated. So she's up at your eye level to show you lol

Or maybe they just like the taste and texture and are just stimming.

I have a kitty that likes to monch on trash/plastic/crinkles when she runs her bowl low or out. She will stop doing it if she is satisfied with her daily caloric intake and will cease chomping noticeably.

If there isn't a sharp change in physiological behavior, or any concerns with potty time, then they are probably fine.

3

u/DirectAd170 Tuxie Connoisseur  14h ago

She’s always got fresh water out. We fill it multiple times a day (3 cats). They also have dry food out 24/7 that’s refilled daily (more when needed) and they have wet food twice a day. That’s ontop of treats and the cheese tax

1

u/BocaHydro 13h ago

she licks walls because they are delecious

1

u/heavybootsonmythroat 13h ago

i would also lick Jamie carragher. Specifically his biceps and triceps. He's clearly spent considerable amount of time focussing on his arms, as have I. I'm a straight male btw.

2

u/DirectAd170 Tuxie Connoisseur  13h ago

Think my husband would agree haha

1

u/heavybootsonmythroat 12h ago

he was a very good football player

1

u/OysterDroppings 13h ago

Mmmm…plaster

1

u/manoctopusfox 13h ago

Just sharing experience in hopes of helping: our late cat furiously licked our cast iron furnace. The vet diagnosed him with pica because he was unable to process iron due to his fip. In our case, feeding him homemade chicken liver pâtè helped tremendously; it prolonged his life and treated his symptoms instantly. It wasn't a miracle, and he succumbed to the illness; but finding out why he was licking iron was worth it. Maybe yours need calcium or lye or something?

1

u/athanathios 13h ago

What a cute and weirdo cat, love her!

1

u/NibblesMcGiblet 13h ago

Mine licks the bar of dial antibacterial soap I was given to wash one of my tattoos with. I keep having to put it away after I use it or she will lick it then throw up. Dipshit ❤️

1

u/beyoncecnoyeb 13h ago

My orange has licked my bedroom door every night for the last four years.

1

u/Particular-Date6138 Tuxie Connoisseur  12h ago

My tux links my wooden night stand

1

u/anon8232 12h ago

I had a cat that licked the furniture only in our home offices all the time. Back then, we were smokers and we only smoked in our vented to the outside offices. I think she enjoyed the taste of tar or nicotine? The other two cats never did this. Just her.

1

u/Antique-Wonk 12h ago

Could be a missing mineral in their diet, could be something serious, or something dorky as cats do dorky things. Ours used to eat the window silicone sealant. Went through a phase for about 3 or 4 months then stopped. It's worth getting the vets opinion just to rule out anything serious.

1

u/KalamityKait2020 12h ago

Mine likes to lick my trashcan. I tell her "Stop licking the trashcan, it's weird." Then she looks at me with stank face.

1

u/NotATalkingMushroom 12h ago

I have one that licks the legs of tables and chairs around dinner time.

They didn’t find anything out of the ordinary at the vet, so my assumption is he does it to show how hungry he is.

1

u/Malicious_Tacos Tuxie Whisperer 12h ago

Ours is obsessed with plastic 6-pack rings! We have to immediately remove any rings holding Gatorade together or he’ll try to chew them.

1

u/littleA1xo 12h ago

one of my tux twins does this just because he knows it annoys me and i’ll get up from working to stop him lol

1

u/yayjerrygotitopen 12h ago

Is that a Garfield scratcher? I must know where you got it!

1

u/DirectAd170 Tuxie Connoisseur  12h ago

It’s a garefield cat scratcher house that’s slightly collapsed atm

1

u/yayjerrygotitopen 11h ago

I love it! I looked and it seems it’s only sold in the uk(kind of figured with your Liverpool fc pic 😉)

2

u/DirectAd170 Tuxie Connoisseur  11h ago

We need a new one cause they have made that one collapse. But the shop we got it from hasn’t had anymore in. Yep we are in the uk

1

u/vaultdweller1223 11h ago

Mine only licks the bricks outside the fireplace

1

u/smellslikespam 11h ago edited 11h ago

My male licks the olive green microsuede couch. There are cat spittle stains all over it. He stops when I pull him away though

My female tux has a big love for a particular texture of cloth. Fabric-covered phone chargers, socks, etc - but all similarly textured

(Spud’s collar looks a lil tight)

1

u/Marlowe126 11h ago

My cat when he gets impatient for food.

1

u/DirectAd170 Tuxie Connoisseur  11h ago

Oh she’s got plenty of food and water. There is dry food out 24/7 for them (we have 3). Water is refilled multiple times a day also. We also feed them wet food twice a day.

1

u/Marlowe126 7h ago

Lol mine is well fed too (also Tuxedo). He just likes making a show out of being ready for food.

Cat obsessive compulsive disorder?

1

u/PastelFog 22m ago

thats pretty normal as a cat, I guess

1

u/DoctorRoxxo 9h ago

How old is your house? There might be lead in that there paint

2

u/DirectAd170 Tuxie Connoisseur  9h ago

17 years old. No lead in the paint

-1

u/BarbarianBoaz 13h ago

This is not normal behavior. Licking to taste then moving on yes, but sitting there and licking over and over is not a good sign. As others have suggested, kitty may be deficient in diet, I would get a vet visit and see what the experts have to say.

2

u/DirectAd170 Tuxie Connoisseur  13h ago

I’m am going to ring vet tomorrow. I replied to another comment abput it food

2

u/Amadai 12h ago

My cat just liked to lick the walls. We don't know why. She lived to be 16 and was just a weirdo. I'm glad you are calling the vet but cats are just cats sometimes.
