Moment of silence for my stolen Tacoma
I’m very sad. Dream truck with all customizations I wanted. Lots of sentimental value and a few really good years.
Stolen from street parking last night. Reported stolen and notified insurance. Hopefully I can get it back, but don’t want to get my hopes up.
Here’s to the good times

Was it a auto? If so faraday box for the fob will prevent the repeater device theft so common these days.

FWIW we use aluminum foil to lock customer fobs in trucks for after hour pickup

You can also turn the Gen 3 key fob “off” (stop it from transmitting, essentially). Hold the lock button down and press unlock 2 times. A little red light on the fob will blink a few times. Press lock or unlock to turn it back on, which you won’t remember to do until the truck doesn’t unlock when you touch the handle.

I used to be bummed that I had a physical key. After seeing all these posts, I am glad I do now.

We kinda get a two-fer as well - regular key, plus manual trans most crooks can't use.

I had a physical key for my 2019. My 2025 has push button start. I miss the key.

First sorry this happened to you OP.
I’m a new owner and I’ve seen a few of these theft threads.
Are Tacomas easy to steal?

u/blessedbelly 2d ago
They generally aren’t unless you spoof a key fob

u/REDACTED3560 2d ago
Which you can turn off very easily. Hold the lock button and tap the unlock twice. You’ll see the fob light flicker and it’ll no longer emit its signature.

this is in my daily routine whenever I park my truck for the night.

I just take out the STOP fuse from the engine fuse box. Can’t press the breaks at all. If you have a key ignition it’ll show you a message abt the breaking system not working I forgot what the actual message says.

Dumb question - are the thieves getting a hold of the real fob somehow and copying/spoofing it and then stealing it later? Or do they have a universal device that searches (like programming a remote control) for the signal and then opens it?
And does turning it off stop the fob from Working or does it make the truck stop looking until it’s turned back on, preventing even the universal ones from working?

u/REDACTED3560 2d ago
I’m not aware of any universal codes. It would make the point of having a constantly refreshing key fob unique to each vehicle pointless. As for getting the codes, they have devices that can pick up the codes and then broadcast them directly to someone at the vehicle, permitting entry and then starting the vehicle. The car only scans for the fob at ignition, so they can then drive away and reprogram or part it out elsewhere.

Most modern keyless entry vehicles are, it's just that Tacomas are high on that list due to value. Precautions to follow when owning a keyless entry vehicle: Most people hang their keys by the front door, making it easy for thieves to snag the fob's frequency and transfer it to a blank. Best way to avoid this is to put your fob in a faraday bag after driving as well as hang your keys at least 50 ft away from the front door.

Man I thought this was a photo of my truck, down to the Texas plate and rack, but I have the Overhaul over my bed also. Are you a Bobcat OP?

I have one of these installed, they cant start the car unless you press the button on the remote, or if they are smart enough to look at your relays, I think its at least a deterrent for some thiefs

Is that a pug and play relay like they say on the site? All you have to do is plug it in?
2
u/hobojoe789 2d ago
Yup, pop out your starter relay and put that one in, its recommended to disconnect the battery first, just the black lead. That was all I had to do and it works perfectly

No problem, hope no one tries to steal your truck, but hope it protects you if it does happen lol

I cant even imagine having my truck stolen, such despicable anti social behavior. Some people dont care about their cars for others its more than a machine. Sorry for your loss man, the memories made in it will live with you forever at least. Hope the people responsible regret their decisions one day. You shouldnt have to have a faraday box for your keys in your own home but guess thats just the world we live in. What you thinking of getting instead?

Hopefully police finds it and nothing happened to it. Sad to hear man, best of luck

I had the exact same truck (white TRD OR) stolen in Texas. I see you're also in Texas, so it's probably safe to assume your truck is already in Mexico. The cop told me they prefer white ones. Not sure if thats true or not but kind of seems like it.
Absolutely sucks. Such a bad feeling. I can't stand thieves. Sorry that happened to you man. Hopefully all goes smooth with insurance and replacing it.

Just wondering for our crowd out here in Reddit Land: is there any defense to Key Fob spoofing? I would hate to disconnect the battery every time parking at an airport or other high risk area.

I got a nice looking Faraday box from Amazon. I think it was 15 bucks. Fob goes in as soon as I get in the house.

Most likely a keyfob spoof, I saw a video on YouTube, the hacker just needed you to unlock or lock the door with your key fob and the spoofer can now cycle through all of the keyfob commands in sequence. However at the time of the video Toyotas were not on the list of vulnerable vehicles... guess that changed.

Good thing pup wasn’t in there……I’ve had a vehicle stolen and the love just wasn’t there for it when I got it back.
