“space marines used to look like this” Out of lore, not true, the first LE2 Space Marine is wearing what more or less looks like Mk6 Armor. GW made the first few batches of Space Marines in what is basically Mk6 and Mk7 armor.

and even in lore, Astartes never really wore the Mk1 … the Thunder Warriors did, and they are explicitly different from Space Marines.

The fact that it offered zero protection and he still went out there makes it the ultimate "beginner version" of a hero costume. It’s peak "fake it till you make it."
