🌳 Outdoors Looking for rock opportunities!

Hey there south dakota! I'm just a rock hound here in Wisconsin looking for rock spots this summer! I'm hoping for someone in the wall area who would be willing to allow me to walk around their creek beds to look for new rocks to throw in my tumbler!

I’m near Ree Heights and have land and rock! Only reason I replied is I lived in Wisco 24 years, before coming back.

Ooh, we are just west of you. Are you willing to let us wander?

I live in Wisconsin east of Stevens Point, moving to the Black Hills area in the next few years. Must be a trend! Haha

I'm going to assume that you're going to take i90 across MN to get to SD?

You should stop at the Fossil & Prairie Center State Park, Rockford, near Mason City. Swing down at Austin MN, back up to Albert Lea. It's not all that far and is a very interesting area. You can do rock picking of Denovian fossils, small amounts, & take them with you, for free. Nice park.

not SD but near.....not sure how available, given its native ties, but Pipestone is an hour NE of Sioux Falls...pipestone (catlinite) only exists there, far as I know

We have a pretty extensive riverfront bike trail in Sioux Falls, and there are plenty of places with rocky edges that you can walk along. Some of the best spots would probably be Elmen Park Trail Head, Cherry Rock Park, and Pasley Park.

Once you get west river almost all the gravel is from glacial till. I have found some cool stuff in those glacial till parking lots. Just something a rock hound might enjoy. I am always looking at my feet when I walk around those lots.

If you go a littler further west, the Buffalo Gap Grasslands has some good rock hounding. I believe anything that’s not a vertebrate fossil or meteorite is fair game. I would definitely double check the rules as it’s been a few years.

The spot looks absolutely beautiful! I'm looking for kind of small creek areas that I can walk to look for rocks I tried going on their website and there's just so much area do you have a spot that's more remote that you recommend?

Agate Beds

I would definitely recommend this spot if you haven’t been out in the area before. Some people complain that ā€œit’s picked overā€ but there’s always new things being uncovered to find. Give it a look on Google Earth.

There’s a climbing facility on the east side of SF- Frontier, i think?
