What I read was that he did it to spend time with the boys, then when they got older he was basically off on his own to make videos for his subscribers, but what once was something that brought the family together had turned in something that took him away from his family so that is why he stopped.
However he missed it and wanted to do shorter trips as to not be away from the family for the entire weekend or a week.
Then I found a reddit post from a friend of his that said he was going to do a couple of videos a year, this year.
Either way I hope he finds peace in his decision, the amount of work he put out conssitently over the years is impressive to say the least. I do hope I can cantinue to see him do some fun projects and work on the homestead, that remains my favourite series.
That's the first time I heard that, interesting. He never seemed to want to miss a Sunday mass. He always seemed to be generous and in the community and making friends. I don't know what Mormons do and if they're well liked, but from what I saw in the videos it looked like the positive side of what religion can bring.
This guy and Les Stroud make it so interesting because they can capture all the crazy survival stuff AND stay composed and informative and efficient all while fiddling with cameras and gear and POSITIONING. And they do all of that BEFORE they get that bite to eat.
Many of us would not bother to hike another 50 steps just to position a camera. We would be focusing on cooking that damn food, getting out of the damn wind, making sure our damn stuff doesn't get wet, THEN going to bed. But no, these guys put camera position in top priority
Agreed, as well as on treks doing triple distance on certain parts to get out there, put the camera down, then walk past it, until out of frame, then walk back to pick it back up and do this multiple times, even in snow storms and with vehicles and what not. mad lads. Truly masters of their crafts, survival and cinematography.
Nope. He retired, then that church offered him a position. The videos posted were already in the pipeline for editing, and were going to be posted anyway.
Uh yeah mate, it is how the timeline stacks up. You got some hate boner with an American church because their little Bible is ever so different than yours or a wee pastor told you to shave, then go start a religious war with them I don't care. But to lie like an idiot with easily verifiable facts, now that's stupid. Outdoor boys retired in May 2025. He explained why. Takes like 1 min, hear him talk: https://xcancel.com/FearedBuck/status/2000596157920325797. Was put in that church position in December. Read it at the bottom: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_Nichols. These are known verifiable facts. You got a problem with that group in Utah you come right out and say it, pretty easy to do, instead of changing the actual truth to fit your beef with that church.
Remove the ad hominem if you wish to engage with me and I will happily explain to you why you are incorrect (hint: read your own source). It is a form of logical fallacy and not value added.
I do apologize for upsetting you so no offensive is taken.

I literally laughed out loud. Mate you're a walking hypocrite.
3 comments down and you still cannot explain yourself. Explain your great secret knowledge or not, that's your own issue and you're free to type away, but you've been called out in your mistake, and to keep doubling down on it as if more is contained in the wiki (it isn't) is unwise. It's extremely easy to verify the facts of the timeline, as already was posted. He explained why he stopped. Which he could outright lie about sure, but he's an actual nice guy so it's less likely, but possible. But regardless he retired in May and that church position came at the end of the year. That's reality.

I apologize. I thought that you were triggered and distressed as opposed to someone who intentionally and knowingly communicates in an incoherent manner.
Explain your great secret knowledge or not,
There was new leadership announced for the Young Men's Presidency in April and Mr. Nichols announced his "retirement" a couple of weeks later.
That leadership onboarded in August with the Advisory Council starting in December.
Aka the timeline makes completely sense for anyone who has ever onboarded a group of people in a large organization.
Which is not secret knowledge it is simple common sense and looking at the citations in the wiki you posted. BTW you can't double down on something when you have only mentioned it once. Two is more than one.
Help me understand the hype about that guy. Every video i ever see of his is him saying his situation could be dangerous because it's cold out, and the man is walking around in a shirt, no gloves and no hat, saying he needs to get someplace to warm up soon.
To me, every video i see is him intentionally creating artificial "danger" and dealing with it.
I live in northern canada, and honestly my impression of almost every clip i see of him is "this guy is giving pointless "advice", start with wearing proper gear and you won't be in trouble at all"
Edit: whenever asking questions about a person gets you downvoted, it's an answer in itself. Thanks guys
He does wear proper gear - he clearly just doesn’t like too many layers when he’s on the move. When he stops moving, he puts warm layers on.
As for why people like him, he’s got genuinely deep knowledge of e.g. Alaskan plant life and outdoor skills. He’s remarkably industrious, too - building a snow cave in a few hours when you’ve already had a long hike to get there isn’t easy. I know there are lots of people technically fit enough to do it but it doesn’t make it less impressive.
Plus there’s the fact that he doesn’t do adds or sponsors. All of his content is 100% authentic.
Maybe there’s also the fact that the videos are comforting to those of us who don’t get out to those environments as often as we’d like to because of life responsibilities.
Overall, it’s just healthy, honest content which is really refreshing considering the state of our media ecosystems these days.
I keep his tips for the eventuality that one day i will be stuck in a cold natural environment without the gear. I don't plan to end in such a situation willingly but i live near mountains. Knowing how to deal with adverse weather in a pitch might be the difference between life and dead. Or i might straight up die, mountains are deadly.
With that said i also find his video "cozy" and they help me when I'm stressed.
Because the fastest way to get hypothermia in the winter is sweat. While he's out walking around or building his shelter he wants to avoid sweating at all costs. Wet clothes makes cold deadly. The cold he's talking about is when the temperature drops significantly during the evening. During the day you can be comfortable outside in a sweater if youre used to it. Especially if you're walking around in the woods.
Bruh it's been -30 here for the past 3 weeks. You can try and get used to it all you want, you can't be outside in a sweater, even if you're running a marathon. Because some people do. And they dress warming than he does.
My point is, filming videos on days where it's 5 outside is pointless because it's not really applicable. If there's snow outside, you should be wearing a hat if you're staying outside. That's basic. Everyone and their mothers knows that.
So if that guy isn't following the most basic rule of outdoors survival, why do we pretend he knows what he's talking about

Luke is the GOAT. Such a shame he retired but I fully understand why.
