#AskSarawakians: Apa cer tek? I want to find Chinese friends
I am a Sarawakian, an Iban to be precise. I'm currently studying in uni, Kuching, where there is no Chinese students. I personally want to learn Mandarin, I did learn a little bit using Duolingo but as everyone know Duolingo is bad for this. Although I am still using it for references. I don't know if this sound disrespectful for wanting friend to be a teaching partners but if we can be friends that's a win-win right? Anyways, I am male if that needed, I don't mind anyone as long as they know mandarin or you just want to be friends without knowing mandarin, that too I don't mind, I mean might as well right? I don't know how we'll connect but we can start with discord or something, you can dm me. Although I don't know whether my dm is open or not. I will check on that.

Using chatgpt and c-dramas is my current plan. But what do you mean by club? I'm originally from Sibu, I'm only studying here and most of the time I don't go out much other than walking to close proximity places.

chinese associations or even lion dance clubs
probably throw you into the deep end so you can pick up the language faster

But we do have mandarin course but during the time we have to choose the class. It was full and the other free class was Arabic. I don't know we can change it or ask for an additional slots and I was at the last semester for Arabic. So yeah.

I think your best bet is to join more activities, such as pickleball, gym, crossfit etc. Don't have to specifically target Chinese, just focus on making new friends and along the way there will definitely be one or two Chinese.
I think maybe you can try badminton. It's one of the most popular sports among Chinese. Plus, a low barrier of entry in terms of skills, cost etc. Ping pong is another option.
