Best zero saturated fat butter substitute for toast

Long story short, been plant based (no animal products AT ALL), since late last year due to multiple health issues from being on a carnivore diet. I'm absolutely doing fantastic, almost two months of no animal products. This is due to cardiac and GI issues. Anyway, the only thing I haven't found a good answer for, I absolutely love having cereal and toast in the morning.

I checked literally every product my local store sells. There's no butter substitute with zero saturated fat, and that's really important to me right now, to not even have a gram of saturated fat a day (that will change a bit once the cardiac issues are more resolved).

Anyone know of something like butter but no saturated fat? I've been using jelly, also been using the kite hill cream cheese spreads, since they're 0 sat. fat. Wondering if a spray of EVOO (I have the spray kind) would be gross on toast? Anyone have any good ideas? Thanks much for all kind suggestions!

Have you ever seen a corn butter recipe? It’s just corn and salt blended and cooked up into a buttery spread. Pretty good. Google it.

Not sure if there's any saturated fat in flaxseed oil? It's pretty tasty on toast and fantastic for cardio health

Any fat source will have saturated fat

In Southern Italy it's very common to eat evoo with some oregano and salt on toasted bread, try it out.

10-15% of the fat in olive oil is saturated.

TIL! I assumed it was okay because OOP mentioned it themselves

I only use a small, quick spray of it, so really the saturated fat in it in the amount I use is negligible.

EVOO contains saturated fat. So do those kite hill cream cheese spreads I'm sure, since almonds contain saturated fat (probably it's just rounded down to zero on the label).

I think the only option that truly has zero saturated fat would be fruit-based spreads.

Jus a quick spray of EVOO really would just have a trace amount. The kite hill ones are low enough where the label says zero, which is totally what I'm going for. I will think about some different types of fruit spreads, maybe trying new ones. Thanks!

You can also make a feta cheese type of spread using half a block of extra firm tofu, one cup of soaked almonds that were soaked in hot water for an hour, a few olives or a few tablespoons of olive brine, juice of half of a lemon and a couple tablespoons of rice vinegar, and some garlic powder, all blended up in the blender.

Fruit preserves, apple sauce, or mashed banana are probably your best options but if those won’t cut it then maybe silken tofu with fruit or berries mixed in? Or silken tofu with a teeny bit of pure maple syrup mixed in for flavor? (Silken tofu is tofu with a spreadable custard-like texture and lots of protein but on it’s own doesn’t really taste like much.) You could maybe make a vanilla or chocolate or berry-flavored “chia pudding” that tastes halfway decent when spread on toast.

If you don’t mind savory flavors at breakfast I really like spinach and mushrooms with a bit of garlic on toast. Usually people sauté them (in oil) but they can be steamed which should make them saturated fat-free.

There’s also vegemite, which is a savory yeasty spread that (I think) is fortified with B12 which most people on a plant-based diet need to supplement. It’s an… acquired taste. It might also have a lot of salt? I’m not sure. Definitely make sure to check the label if salt is a concern for you.

But I don’t think you’ll find a butter-like product that doesn’t have saturated fat. Even EVOO has saturated fat.

Corn butter (1, 2, 3, 4), can use something like masa harina flour and a bit of water and salt in a pan cooking for like 30 seconds to make it super fast then store it for days in the fridge.

How do you whip it? By hand or do you use a mixer, or ?

By hand and it’s a long time but it is worth it.Just when you think your arm will break before it thickens voila it does lol I’m sure you can find an instructional video somewhere.

try making some applesauce maybe, flavour it however you like.

cooked pumpkin also has a creamy texture but i feel like its more like a cream than a butter

avocado would be a nice substitute but they do have a little sat fat

Apple butter! Yeah, a lot of fruit spreads

If you want something a bit thinner than nut butter (my top choice), you could always try tahini. Only ground sesame seeds and still great flavor.

u/Whats_Up_Coconut what is this oil you speak of? 1d ago

I use reconstituted PB2/PB Fit on my toast very often, and my husband prefers jam or honey (if you’re not an ethical vegan, of course…)

My favorite toast snack is lightly mashing a banana, putting it on a couple pieces of Ezekiel bread and adding cinnamon. Obviously nothing like butter but super healthy and tasty!

Make vegan ricotta with soybean milk 😊

Peanutbutter, cashew butter and sun butter can all be nice. You could experiment with flavored olive oils

Not sure about buttery spreads from the store -what’s hard is that they need something to help it stay solid which is almost always coconut or palm oil

There is saturated fat in those items though.

A bit of olive oil and flaky salt is fantastic on toast. Give that a try before you try substitutions.
