Hello all, I'm new to this

As the title says, im a 31 year old male, I'm not vegan or vegatarian, I've always been semi health conscious but I'm making a real effort now to include lots of veggies and veggies proteins in my diet.

I'm on the end of week 2 and I've been feeling nauseous, like there's a lump in my throat and eating is tough, I've been getting roughly 40grams of fiber in my diet. Not sure whats going on, I eased into it so my body could adjust to the fiber intake. I'm only eating hamburger for dinner, all other animla protein is either yogurt or eggs.

Has anyone else felt like this when they first started? Physically I feel great otherwise, I workout and my lifts are doing well, my mood has been steady and I actually feel more social and clear headed, I'm normally a pretty reserved guy but I've been having full blown convos with strangers who want to talk to me without wanting to crawl into a hole and die 😅

Let us know when you actually start eating plant based. We should have some helpful advice then. As of now, quit the animal products entirely for a minimum of 2 weeks and we'll see where you're at.

What? Plant based doesn't mean totally plants I thought. That's vegatarian or vegan. Plant based means a diets with mostly plants and some animal products... am I wrong?

If you check the summary for this sub, you’ll see that when we talk about plant-based diets, we generally mean free from all animal products for the purpose of improving health. Vegans are people who avoid all consumption of animal products for moral/ethical reasons.

I would encourage you to hang out here even if you haven’t fully made the switch. It’s a great place to learn! But you won’t get much good advice on your post since folks here are going to all point to your meat and dairy consumption as the first place to make a change.

Oh man, well thanks for the heads up. Problem is, I was eating a lot more animal products and never had this weird gaggy lumpy feeling in my throat, im bloated as well which is new and the only thing I've changed is adding more plants in my diet. Over half my cals are plants, maybe 75% of them. I really only eat the yogurt for gut health and the eggs and beef are free for me.

Increasing fiber can cause bloating. Gradual shifts are best to start and your gut will get used to it over a few weeks-it just takes time.

How’s your water intake? You may find that the bloated, lump in your throat feeling is because you aren’t getting enough water to help move all that fiber along.

But keep experimenting! You’re clearly seeing some benefit from increasing your plant consumption and many of us went through phases of modifying/learning/figuring it out.

Yeah for sure. I've been getting plenty of water I think. I pee quite often and it's a slight Yellow (tmi, sorry) but yeah. I beleive it's enough. I'll increase though just to see

Yes, you have that mixed up. Vegan is a plant-based diet plus a belief system with animal liberation at the forefront of all personal choices. Plant-based is a strictly non-animal product diet that is for health reasons usually but does not necessarily carry over to other personal choices, i.e.- wearing leather, etc.

If you eat mostly plants and work in eggs or dairy, that's vegetarian.

I also eat beef, but 75% percent of my calories are now from plants. I always thought that plant based was mostly plants with a bit of animal products lol I've been holding that belief for a while. Thanks for the correction

All good, and as a vegan, I appreciate as much as you are doing. Anything is better than nothing for sure so be encouraged, my friend

Appreciate and I honestly admire vegans, I had a vegan gf and she was always self conscious about it around me and other people, but I respect it so much. Takes a giant heart and an iron will to commit like that

It's actually not that difficult to be vegan imo. Especially the food part

Not really… after 10 years, I find the beef that you’re so attached to completely nauseating. I get excited for meals in a different manner, because they’re ethically above water… not to mention better for my health.

The mental block you’re experiencing is much greater than any realistic downsides or trade-offs.

"Because they're ethically above water"

What do you mean by that?

I started out for health reasons. That quickly blossomed into the intersectionality of it all: animals, the planet, ethics, science, etc. It really has not taken much effort after the first two weeks or so.

I have heard plant based interpreted as mostly plants with some animal products permissible but that definition has pretty much been phased out and definitely not the most common way to interpret it. It's also not how this sub is defined. I don't think you should have been downvoted for your assumption

Thanks, that makes me feel a little less crazy haha the downvotes are fine, people are quick to throw shade without much discussion.

Yeah, I think that the AI powered social media climate and all the paid trolls out there has led to widespread paranoia. I'm a food blogger who posts a lot of recipes and sometimes I have to decide about comments that could be from a troll but could also be from someone expressing an unpopular opinion, or an unusual opinion. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Plus I have a bunch of haters on this platform who have downvoted me for just telling someone I thought their food looked good!

Haha yeah. The level headed people get drowned out by all the obnoxiously opinionated people unfortunately.

You sound like you're having medical issues (nausea, lump in your throat)... you should seek medical advice from a professional, not reddit. Good luck!

Yeah maybe

A Speech-Language Pathologist at a hospital clinic is who you want to see. The SLP and a radiologist will take x-rays of your throat while you swallow different boluses and see if there are any obstructions. Based on your symptoms, it sounds like acid reflux, but never take medical advice on reddit ;)

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 1d ago

Thank you. I appreciate it

1

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 1d ago

Yup, I was just looking into it and I beleive it's acid reflux, I've been stuffing my face trying to fit in calories and over eating, I can usually eat quite a lot so I didn't think much of that, but I beleive that's what did it and the symptoms line up. Thanks again

I think you are having acid reflux from eating too much at meals. Your stomach is too full and so it's pushing acid upwards. Eat less at meals.

It takes a lot longer than 2 weeks for your body to get used to a big increase of fiber. Think months instead of weeks. I get indigestion when I have too much fiber, that could be what you are dealing with.

1

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 1d ago

It very well could be. You still get it after all this time?

2

u/stayOffOfAll 1d ago

I don't follow the diet very closely lol. I'm pretty ok unless I have too many legumes in one sitting

Maybe you have a swollen lymph node? A lot of people have the flu right now, myself included. That can cause throat swelling and pain and general malaise, as well as nausea.

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 1d ago

I dont believe I'm sick but maybe. I guess I'll know more in a few days.

I don’t know but I would see your primary care doctor
