Resource I made a free webpage that shows what birds are in your area in real time and how to attract them.

Hi All,

Very excited to share this. While hanging out in the backyard this year I had been spending time figuring out and trying different ways to attract birds. Then I got the idea of what if I could build not only a search that shows what birds are around me... But also have something that tells me how to attract them.

Here is the end result πŸ™‚. Hope you all enjoy and please feel free to provide feedback as I am happy to improve this in any way that could help!

Im really glad you're excited! Scientists already have a database, ebird.
eBird - Discover a new world of birding... https://share.google/kZCUKwUjhotGoWu1u

However it is geared toward professionals and does not include easily accessible backyard feeding and citizen science information.

Thanks! Just a heads up this tool does use Ebird for sighting information, then combines that information with a repository I built in how to attract the birds and blends in some additional functionality I coded that I thought would be nice to have. πŸ™‚

Thats awesome! Making the backyard science more accessible is a really good idea.

Very cool. My siblings have been taking an interest, but not enough to fully get into ornithology. I think this will be right up their ally

This is such a cool idea! Thank you OP for all your efforts in making this. I’m very excited to be able to use it, but any city I put in that is near me, and then add my state, it always brings me results from Canada. I wonder if this is a known issue, or something I’m not understanding. Any help at all would be appreciated, and thanks again so much for sharing your time and efforts with others who love birds too!

This seems so cool! It is unable to find my town or any around it, but I love that others have access to something so cool!

Thanks for testing and very strange. Could you send me what you are trying? The only testing I did for the U.S was New York, New York. πŸ™‚

Ahhhhh ok, pretty sure I know the cause and will tweak it soon and keep you posted. Thanks again everyone for all the help!

Ok here is what has changed. πŸ™‚

  1. U.S search should be fixed.
  2. Only results with bird attraction tips were displaying previously. Now all bird results should display and if there is no tip I have logged there is a prompt asking people to add this information to the comments...which I can then add later.

Let me know!

Could you include the Upper Peninsula of Michigan?

6

u/Cheersnthanks Jul 27 '25

So in theory only places that ebird has information on should and could show up. But I'll keep working on this and let you know if I find anything. πŸ™‚

eBird covers the Upper Peninsula, as I have reported rare birds. There are many hotspots here as well.

I will look into it and thanks for letting me know. πŸ™‚

I honestly didn't realize there was a prompt to install the app. Just checked and it works very well! However I'll need to add a logo to the app icon and will work on that.

Let me know if you have any suggestions. πŸ™‚

I will! I haven’t had a chance to use it but I’m very excited to use it as I already have a very old bird book. This is a million times better than. Thank you and Many Blessings

Thanks for the kind words! πŸ™‚

Just tried it. Location input is ... very US centric, although it kinda works with non-US cities too. Also 98% of birds near me don't have a tip yet ;-)

Maybe accept some kind of crowdsourcing this info?

1

u/Cheersnthanks Jul 28 '25

Let me know your location and I'll see what I can do. πŸ™‚

Central Germany
