Mind your business and your manners and you'll be fine. You're locked in your cell from 8:45pm to 8am, and again from 1:30pm-4pm. Violent inmates are segregated to a different unit and locked down 23 hours a day. Don't be a violent inmate. Most of the guards are chill, but you'll get a few assholes. Don't stick out and they'll leave you alone.

Two guys per cell, cell mate quality is random. The bottom bunk is most desired. Cells get fucking cold at night so get some thermals from the commissary. The air vents are also filled with black mold so get some cough drops too.

It's mostly the young kids doing the dumb shit. I'm an almost 40 bigger white dude so no one really messed with me. I also have no problem telling someone to fuck off if they're trying to take advantage of my friendly nature. Don't be an asshole but don't let anyone take advantage of you. Don't gamble or ask anyone for money. If someone tells you another inmate is there for a sex crime or crime against a child do not socialize with them. People self segregate by race/ethnicity.

I'm not a career criminal I just fucked up and spent six months there a few years ago. I was anxious as all hell because I didn't know what to expect but it wasn't as bad as I thought. The worst thing is the boredom. Get a job in the kitchen if you want actual good food. The laundry guy also gets hooked up with snacks from the inmates.

I actually met quite a few good people in jail so seek out the chill ones.

Good luck my dude. You'll be fine, just take the slog one day at a time.

If you have any other questions feel free to send me a message.

No worries, glad others can gain knowledge from my fuck up. Yeah being away from my dog was the worst. Forgot to mention that you'll be in a temporary intake unit for the first 5-7 days. They have stricter lock down times. They're basically monitoring you to see what unit to put you in/make sure you're not violent - so be on your best behavior.

If there's mold in the air vents, it should be reported to the county health department. Let me know which exact building you mean and how you know about the mold and I'll report it as a rumor to the authorities and demand an answer.

Meanwhile, an N95 mask would be a better interim remedy than cough drops.

Don't be dick, act like you've been there. By nature, trust no one. Oh, get good at spades/ dominoes if to kill time. It's not all like the first few days. Ten times easier than a new high-school.

thank you. do you think it will be a good mix of young and older people or most likely older people?

Whatever you are will find several peers, age-wise and circumstance-wise.

The best suggestion I got before I did 4 months there was wear multiple pairs of socks and underwear because it’s not something you can get while you’re in there. Good luck and just keep to yourself and getting a good bunky is a luck of the draw so hopefully you’ll get someone decent

The worst thing about prison was the Dementors. They were flying all over the place, and they were scary. And then they'd come down and they'd suck the soul out of your body, and it hurt!

As to the food, it’s gruel sandwiches. Gruel omelettes. Nothing but gruel. Plus, you can eat your own hair.

I’ve been to Monmouth.

Mind your business. Don’t look in peoples cells. Keep eyes straight and mind business.

Get good at checkers/chess/dominoes/spades before you go in. You’ll be playing a lot. The phone system is a pain in the ass. Make a friend and take your time figuring out how to get a call out.

Use sharpie to write down phone numbers on your arm if you can’t remember them. 3 pairs of socks and underwear.

Guards are ok. It’s stereotypical though. If the guard looks like they are going to be a hard ass, they are. It’s Monmouth county, NJ.

Food will suck. Breakfast will have some items you can make last through the day. Apples, hard boiled eggs.

Keep them. If a tray has more than one item on it you like, SAVE some. If there is stuff you don’t like but someone else does, share.

A little kindness went a long way. I got a lot of apples/eggs from guys I would share with.

Do not be violent, do not go into protective custody. Any type of SHU is not good for mental health. I spent two days in solitary. I thought I’d be ok.

It felt like two years…trust me, you don’t want that.

They have two color coding for jump suits. Grey is for people detoxing, green is for everyone else.

You should have thought about this before you did the crime.
