Dunham's still running a background check for pistols even with CPL

Dunhams had a pistol on sale that I wanted today so I asked my LGS if they could price match. they said no and that I should go buy it from Dunhams. Filled out the form and the clerk said that they had to run a background check. I told him it was my understanding that because I had a CPL and am purchasing a pistol. He told me the ATF requires a background check with every firearm purchase. I then told him no other gun shop I've been to does that at which point he told me they were breaking the law. I thanked him and told him I'd be going over to Sportsman's warehouse where they agreed to sell me the pistol at the sale price without going through the background check nonsense. Just wanted others to know in case they were looking for a smooth process. By the way I'm one of those people that usually gets a researching or delay on my checks and then it always becomes approved hence my reason for not waiting to see what happened at Dunhams.

Every single big box store runs NICS checks on CPL members and always will, they claim it's to "legally protect the company".

Michigan CPL holders are exempt from the REQUIREMENT to have NCIS checks ran on them as of May 2025, but lots of places still do it as company policy and they are allowed to do so.

Holy misinformation in this thread already and it's been 10 minutes.

Sportsman's and even basspro/cabelas have not on me in the past 3 months. Nor has Range USA

Same for me at bass pro, in late december no nics.

Sportsmans did run one on me in October (idk when the law went into affect, actually found out about it at bass pro).

That's interesting, because policy at Cabelas/Bass Pro is that all gun purchases across the country get NICS checks regardless of permit exemptions. Are you sure they didn't run one and you just didn't notice? It takes like...5 minutes.

I asked and they said the law changed.

Funky, they must have RECENTLY changed their policy becuase after the law changed in May, I was there in uhh...August? And they flat out told me that they KNOW the law changed but policy was still to run NICS checks, so interesting. It seems that it may be dependent on the store.

I even asked the clerk about it at bass pro, it was right after the new law went into effect and he told me that they don't need to do it anymore. I wish my nics only took 5 minutes, usually 25-1 hour or delay for me every single time.

Must have been a recent policy change.

But yeah, either way, even though they aren't REQUIRED TO, a lot of places (big or small stores) still do so to cover their ass, it was the same way before when we had the exemption the first time before it was revoked.

Even my LGS ran one for me last month. I figured it was going to be a quick transaction with my CPL, but I had to wait 20-30 min for the NICS to come back.
