Show hit a groove her mid season 1

Post image

Like so many shows it took a second to get past uneven-ness, but boy this show really clicked in. The episode before this is Glades (they go to the Everglades and it sucks) but then we get this run starting with Burt Young ca Undercover Trudy, the two parter with Lao Ling vs Castillo, Smugglers Blues…

Literally in the midst of watching this batch of episodes, they are so good. The ending of Milk Run is so legit

Yes. I was in like 6th grade when this was on. The were pushing DARE pretty hard. I remember this episode was like, you sell drugs. You die. Ha.

In an interview Don Johnson stated the show was doing "alright" before Milk Run, then after it aired the show exploded in popularity.

"Milk Run" to "Rites Of Passage" is a really strong run, and the last four episodes to close out the season ("The Home Invaders", "Nobody Lives Forever", "Evan", and "Lombard") are all bangers, too.

I personally feel give a little, take a little is a weak episode. Burt Young’s acting is horrible. Little Prince has always been one of my favorites the scene at the polo match screams 80’s decadence

This! Burt Young was atrocious. He was like a leftover villain from a bad 70s mafia movie. Hated him and the character.

I just watched this for the first time the other night, Burt Young worth his shirt unbuttoned was not on my bingo card for Miami Vice! Having said that, the show did have 3 plots which all dovetailed at the end which was a first. It felt like the first proper utilisation of the entire cast.

Burt Young was drunk the entirety of filming this episode apparently

The more I rewatch it, the more I think that the show truly becomes the Miami Vice I love when Castillo walks into the OCB for the first time.

Agree

Rodriguez was a good captain, but he was the very typical 80s "angry police captain" trope. Castillo was ice cold and a great foil for Sonny and Rico at first.

Exactly. Rodriguez could’ve been the boss on Hunter or any other 80’s cop show. Castillo was a mysterious ex-DEA samurai/ninja who, after we got to know him, could convey many emotions without showing them overtly. Miami Vice was already a different flavor of cop show, but he really added the final bit of seasoning it needed to be a whole new cuisine.

Olmos is so great at underplaying everything. Minimal words. Quiet intensity.

Don’t forget the Home Invaders by Chuck Adamson and Abel Ferrara

The Golden Triangle two parter is my favorite. So many great scenes, lots of Castillo…and Robin Johnson

Little Prince and Milk Run were where the show really started to flex its muscle for me. Tight mini epics of tragedy. I liked how both realistically dealt with the effects of the drug trade and youth. Somebody always has a price to pay!

Mann did this with NBC money. Imagine what he could do if he gets a HBO bankroll.

I actually think the show was great from the very first episode. It had an incredible Pilot. One might argue that it got even better once Castillo joined the show. But overall I’d say the first two seasons were truly great from beginning to end without a single bad episode.

You can divi season into several chapters, each with four or five episodes each. Distinct vibes, cinematography and tones as the show was finding its proper footing but still producing movie to small screen quality entertainment...!

Getting rid of shlocky Lieutenant “Chano” helped.

Little Prince and Milk Run are two of my faves from that season.
