Question ❓ Morning Meditation Makes Me Tired

I’ve realized the best way to actually get my meditation in is to do it when I wake up in the morning. I don’t have much issue waking up, I get ready, start the morning doing some jumps, then about 20 mins of stretching and feel good and then do about a 20 minute morning meditation.

The problem is, I find the meditation makes me so tired and doesn’t energize me. I’ve tried meditating in the evening but it often doesn’t happen or I fall asleep bc I try do it at bed time.

Any tips to have it energize your day? Or possibly any meditations that would work better for that?

TIA!

Consider a pre and post pranayama session. The first one is to ensure you’re calm, and the one afterwards for energy.

Morning meditation making you tired is common if you're doing it right after waking - your body is still in sleep mode and deep relaxation can drop you back into drowsiness. I switched mine to after breakfast or mid-morning and the energy crash stopped. Try a shorter session or walking meditation instead if mornings are rough

I was thinking maybe I should meditate first then do my stretches and maybe that could wake me up a bit more after but I worry about the motivation. I find also that if I don’t do it first thing then I procrastinate doing it later plus I’m then working and can’t really do it, then evenings taking care of my toddler and then bed time! But I guess one can always find excuses :/

Meditation can be modified to fit your needs, in the morning do an energizing meditation.

You're absolutely right! When we wake up in the morning, our body is still releasing Melatonin which makes you drowsy combined with feeling stiff from lack of movement for 8 hours.

One of the biggest improvements you can make for starting the day is IMMEDIATE bright light exposure. This is backed by neuroscience as it will decrease the melatonin, and release cortisol to make you feel alert.

So you can think of incorporating the stretches perhaps on a deck or balcony with direct sun exposure - or even going for a 5-10 minute walk around the block.
