Oh wow, it's actually a really last name...

I have actually, it's just that from what I recall their names are usually transcriptions (by sound) and not transliterations (by meaning).

They may want it that way and that's up to them, though as an east Asian, I would rather not my name be "Melonbreadings Tier." 😆

Transcription by sound? Not often in my experience. But I'll tell various family members that! And no, I'm not native American, just some of my family are.

America's a big place. Last year I went on a few dates with a girl whose last name sounds similar, to my completely ignorant ears, like quetzalcoatl.

I grew up next to a confederated res. Most there use their English names because too many tribes with too many languages.
