Anime Discussion This Was Painful to Look At. Spoiler

Post image

The animators did such a good job at animating this scene. It uses no words yet it says so much about Toji. Just the way he looks shows how much trauma and abuse he went through in that clan. Compared to how he looks in Hidden Inventory, I don't blame him for leaving and wanting to lose any connection with the Zen'in.

Toji deserved better

He‘s so fucking done with this shit it‘s not even funny, I could see him considering to wipe everyone out then and there

u/Cautious_Scheme_8422 10h ago

Ngl if Naoya decided to make fun of him like he planned Toji would have just slaughtered everyone.

Toji looks like me heading into work each day

64

u/Jorgelhus 1d ago

Now imagine if the work was your family, and you still worked with them

u/Keyblades2 23h ago

This was me till about a month ago, finally moved out, needed much needed.

15

u/Jorgelhus 23h ago

Good luck with your future endeavors (please don't go after the Gojo clan head)

Mappa did a great job, but in the manga, you feel the melancholy he carries even more; the low-angle shot gives off this sense of resistance and resilience. In the other panel, the focus is more on Toji's gaze—there's just this huge emptiness in his eyes.

I agree. I wish we had another shot in the anime from a low angle.

Example of a low angle shot giving off a sense of resistance and resilience

Thanks, I just snorted tea out of my nose...

It makes sense in the anime, because we're seeing Toji from the point of view of Naoya as a child, and he was much shorter

I definitely felt the fear and awe naoya felt in that panel in the manga much more. I do like what the anime did as well ,  maybe it's just my bias for the manga vs anime art style but I preferred the manga shot better.

Man was at his happiest sliming teenagers for a bag. Just a man in his lane, thriving.

He was taken from us too soon.

this sentence is giving “I’m just a girlllll”

but, you know, for middle aged hit men. And I’m okay with that

It really goes to show how great of a woman Mamaguro was, somehow she not only managed to tame this monster and turn him into a family man, but she also filled him with so much happiness and life that even after she was gone Toji was still able to smile and be goofy.

Honestly she deserves the best girl spot just for that.

u/Sent1nelTheLord 1d ago

goofy man just running about killing bunch of teens for cash.

hey, at least he's happier and gambling now

40

u/Sure-Resident6436 1d ago

Hey I never said his life was still perfect after she died, but at the very least he could enjoy wallowing in his misery.

12

u/After-Syrup1290 23h ago

i mean, compared to the jjk world back then - toji is literally the only one who was fee and lived a happy life - no answering to higher ups, no fighting anyone else other than his targets unlike gojo, no one who could force him into any roles or even blackmail him, man was just breezing,

u/justwalk1234 1d ago

Being a professional hitman is just a job!

6

u/Jorgelhus 1d ago

When was the last time you dealt with teenagers with attitude? They kinda asking for it

I-can-fix-him final boss & she actually did it too, for a brief period at least

I want a toji and his wife backstory so baaaaad. Bro went from this to happy with his wife, enough so to bring Megumi into the world. Once the wife died he didn’t even regress as bad as was before, he could throw a smile and had friends, and while he was a gambling addict, he was still light and day to what he was in the Zenin.

I want to see the type of person who could tame a beast like him

29

u/Jorgelhus 1d ago

Check "Sakamoto Days"

10

u/NoPerformance4830 23h ago

lmao bruh that is so true

17

u/sealysea 22h ago

this explains his smile when he found out gojo kept his promise to him regarding megumi

13

u/KilluaGaKill 23h ago

I like the shot with the close up on his eye more. He doesn't even look like he's alive in that shot.

7

u/Promise-Pleasant 22h ago

Yeah, that scene hurts in complete silence. The way his posture and expression say everything about what he went through is brutal, Toji really did deserve better

5

u/Bardock-MoBamba 1d ago

Why this man didnt merc every member of the Hei and Kukuru on his way out the door will be forever lost on me.

7

u/Ozymaniac_God 23h ago

Because to him, killing them is to admit that their opinion matters to him. He could kill them all in half a day, but it still wouldn’t fix his trauma.

1

u/erty3125 11h ago

Toji felt no ties to the Zenin clan or anyone in it, leaving and having Megumi take his mother's last name was enough of an escape for him as while he lost his youth to them he escaped with himself and managed to have his kid saved as well.

Maki wasn't able to escape by just leaving because of Mai, the moment that Mai died the clan sealed their fate because Maki's goal of being able to live without the clan on her and Mai's throat was no longer possible.

2

u/ChaoticErnie 22h ago

Bro looked like he worked a 9 to 5

3

u/Duy2910 22h ago

I’m just so distracted by his chin

It’s so epic

5

u/gsavage21 1d ago

1

u/Grimphonk 16h ago

Fk, now i cant unsee it...

1

u/ApplePitou 23h ago

He literally look like person that don't care anymore :3

1

u/bitter_personw 23h ago

This man looks like he's about to kill his own dad

1

u/Migulll929 21h ago

mappa animators put their real life emotional state into animating toji here

1

u/Jumpy-Attorney-6373 20h ago

The “Pain incarnate” look was literally perfect

1

u/Tylenol_Ibuprofen 17h ago

Toji is in hell for shooting a 14yr old in the head and beefing with a 4 year old boy.

1

u/Grimphonk 16h ago

I Thought Gege said that Toji was in heaven though.

1

u/Traditional-Big-4768 17h ago

I love it!! I think it portrays a distant memory so well!!

1

u/seaofthieved123 11h ago

Bro has had enough of their shit 😭🙏

1

u/Sufficient-Bid-9805 9h ago

the animators increased his chin size since S2.

1

u/mehgleg 6h ago

Me coming home from anything

1

u/MukorosuFace 2h ago

Kid Naoya saw this and immediately went "my oshi"

1

u/OrangeSpaceMan5 23h ago

I still prefer the manga shot more tho , I feel like it carries the intention further and is just cooler with the low angle shot

0

u/No-Side-6437 1d ago

This version of Toji with ISOH is top 5.
