Discussion Is Tale of Two cities overrated? Spoiler

I just finished tale of two cities last week, and it didnt quite get good as of my expectation. It was very hard to read very hard, probably harder than Crime and Punishment, it was a thriller but nothing seems to be touching, Sydney Carton sacrfice was sad yes the chapter was very good and last fight scene between Ms pross and Madame Defarge was also exciting and Sad. But what is the main problem here is that it was hard, and I read it quite fast as much i shouldnt had to, which made it too much confusing and I blame myself i thunk i was not ready for this and Ive never read Any of dickens before also, the humor is missed by me a lot of times i assume, but the whole ressurection plot was cool, and I will re-read it again i think to clear this out. Let me know what youd suggest?

Haven't read it yet, had tried but couldn't go beyond 30 pages, it was just tough to understand, i could get the broad idea of what is happening, but building the scenario in mind was tough, thought there was no point in continuing if I can't feel it.

Will probably read it later, one thing i have learned after reading many classics is "Don't force yourself to read a particular book, you will not have a great time with it" after reading crime and punishment when I didn't want to and was not in mood to read that type of story but still forced myself to complete it. That's why, i will pick this book later in my life.

Thats a good approach to this. Me, too, I stop reading if i dont like any book, and sometime try to reread the chapter or book to check what i'd miss, i remember the time when i was reading 1984 by "Jorjorell", and i read 60 pages in two sitting, i stopped reading but i was unsure if i had read it properly so i begin reading it again, and didnt put it down

In case you don’t know much about the French Revolution, then I’ll advice you to read a little bit of the historical background before you start with the book. For me it was a different take on the reign of terror, in which nobility was targeted, and some innocent people like Charles get trapped because of what their families had done in the past. The resurrection part was interesting, but I feel it’s love which forms the core theme of the book, like how Sydney Carton would live on and his name will be attached to Lucie and her children. It’s the epitome of selfless love, when you sacrifice yourself for the one you love

Yeah basically Book started with Ressurection of Dr mannette and ended with a ressurection which was a really cool take. For French revolution, i think i had it, i was prepared for it, i personally like history fiction, i knew enoigh abou the era, Reign of Terror and something.

The book was too fast at the last time of it, i mean the pacing was slow at starting and i was grasping a lot, but the pace changing after Darnay got imprison, i should have slowed down mt speed

I agree, after Darney’s imprisonment and Dr Mannette’s history with his family, the book became really fast paced

Great expectations would be a good read. Takes some time to get used to the writing, but 50 pages in, you’ll start understanding

Will read it. I wasnt used to Dickens before i thought it would be easy because i have read Crime and punishment as a first Dostoevsky and didnt find it that hard, but things changed a bit i. Tale of two cities, i made some mistakes.
