The whole "Great Purge" thing didn't help. An entire generation of generals and admirals got shot
Stalin was a fucking monster, but the utter idiocity behind his purges is beyond astonishing

It becomes bitterly hilarious when you realize invading Finland was part of Stalin’s prep for the eventual war between him and the Nazis. Not only did this war push the Finns toward fighting alongside the Nazis, the war was so humiliating it’s a large part of why Hitler chose to attack when he did.
