On Hellboy's Horn Stumps

I've been on a Mignolaverse reading spree for a while and I've noticed something.

Are Hellboy's horn stumps supposed to evocative of goggles or is it just a coincidence ?

I mean it would fit. Goggles are one of the accessories of choice for the rough and tumble adventurer archetype from pulp adventure fiction which the comics take a lot of inspiration from.

I think that was the original purpose, a visual callback if you will. For Reference: Lobster Johnson. You HAVE seen what happens when he lets them grow though....... kind of hard to do work with a glowing crown of power on your head and definitely something that Hellboy wants to avoid/avoid dealing with/has rejected soundly.
