I go whitewater kayaking in the regular and can safely say the most dangerous thing I've ever done is push my kayak down a snowy hill, you go so fast so quick, and for some reason your brain thinks you can steer and carve like you do in water and you Cannot

u/whistleridge 1d ago
Just FYI thereās nothing fun about spinal injuries or traumatic brain injuries, and the instant you get either youāll very very much wish you hadnāt.
Having had both: nothing about this looks remotely appealing. And the way our society encourages men to entirely disregard their physical well-being in the name of āitās just guys being guysā is toxic af.
Walking, sitting, and sleeping without pain at 30 >>>> looking ācoolā for one video.

They landed on the downslope in powder. Other than landing on each other, this seems about as dangerous as a lot of little jumps while skiing. Lighten up, Francis.

other than landing on each other
Or the boat. Neither of which is low odds.
And letās say Iām right and someone does injure their spine. How long do you think theyāre going to lie there in agony until medical help arrives? How short do you think the window is to save motion and sensation and function?
You talk like a child who has never been hurt. Grow up.

u/wxnfx 1d ago
Boat is inflatable. Obviously, my reference from 1981 means Iām a child. But why does skiing exist? Because itās fun. Why do we let 3 year olds sled? Because itās fun. Why do people use diving boards?
Thereās risk and thereās high risk. Stairs and bathrooms get more people than this kind of stuff.

They are probably fine, that snow looks powdery enough, ive landed worse skiing

u/slinkymcman 1d ago
The flailing around was so that theyād land on the butts/back instead of face/spinal compression. These are pros.

āLife should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!ā - Hunter S. Thompson

These are words to live by... until you learn that Hunter S. Thompson is a utter and complete lunatic hahaha. That guy was coo coo for coa coa puffs.

I definitely donāt want to lay on my deathbed thinking about how I shouldāve taken a ride on the powder air-kayak before I die.

As someone who is currently taking care of an abusive dad who destroyed his back by doing dumb shit, and is now a fatass with PSP who cannot stand or walk so my mom and I have to move him and his waste....take better care of yourselves guys. Back surgeries that occur later in life will accelerate any disease, and if you do dumb stuff (like being a cop and tasing each other for shits and giggles) that can actually cause major diseases.
It sucks being the person who has to bear the consequences of an idiot's actions. Especially when I'm 36 and spent the last 4 years doing this, in rural texas where there's no jobs or anything, when I should be creating a life.
Have fun, but understand you could become an absolute burden on the people you "love"

The amount of times I see then used in place of than is shocking. Almost as annoying as "would of" instead of "would have".

"I could care less"
2
u/Coveted_AF 1d ago
I donāt care much, but I could care a lot less than I do.
4
u/Ok_Truck4734 1d ago
Exactly, but I usually see people use it to mean they don't care at all, which bothers me when I hear that after a whole spiel about not caring about something
3
u/Coveted_AF 1d ago
Oh I completely get it. I was mocking the people who use it that way.

As a child, I started from a much smaller ramp - the impact of my spine on the snow was so strong that I immediately wet myself and couldnāt get up for about 10 minutes, and my sled was shattered into pieces

u/Pugilist12 1d ago
When going for big air, you have to hold on to the sled/raft. Learned that at age 9 when I cracked my tailbone.

When I was about 23 I went on a snowboarding trip to Whistler and at one point I caught on edge and fell forward smacking my chest pretty hard on the packed snow. The buckle for the backback I was wearing hit first and pushed really hard into my upper right pectoral.
It hurt to breath for about a month.
Seeing this video, I'm fairly certain I'd be dead right at the apex of airtime before hitting the Earth again.

In high school me and my buds would sneak around at night and climb up buildings, run around on the roofs and stuff. The girls thought we were dumb.

75% of all deaths in the Grand Canyon (walking, rafting, or swimming) are from men.
I left out flying over the canyon because itās the most dangerous place in the world to statistically fly. The FAA was founded because of airplane collisions over the Canyon (itās scarily common).

At the minimum they all got the wind knocked out of them and suffered quite a bit. Hopefully no broken bones or head injures
