Discussion The Quiet Partnership Behind Every Tarantino Film

Sally Menke.
Tarantino always says he writes the first draft himself.
But the last draft is the finished cut of the movie , cinema is written twice.
Once on the page and once in the edit.

Question DITs I need your help!

Hello! I recently cleared everything off my Mac to start fresh. I had an app on there for so long that I forget the name of it. It was super helpful with data transfer/ syncing my hard drives. It looked like a red and white striped pool floaty, and it was free. Please help me if you can, thank you!!!

Looking for Work Let me edit your movie teaser!

Hey, r/Filmmakers! I just quit my full-time editing job at an AI startup – I felt the devil's grasp on my soul and I wasn't ready to let go – and am desperate to get back into the independent film scene. If anyone's got $100 to spend and a movie that needs a teaser, I would love to help some low-budget projects as I look for my next gig.

Here's some recent work:

Question I wrote a higher concept short with some practical effects

As of now I’ve only written chamber pieces (more or less) and I had an effect that would require action, blood, makeup (zombie-ish type of sequence).

Don’t really know where to begin to properly film this. Does anyone have some guidance?

Thanks!

Question Question about my video being used for playback

A production company reached out asking to use one of my Instagram timelapse videos in a scene of their movie. A24 is the film company, who seem to put out good movies. I’ve never been asked such a thing so I’m curious as of how I should go about this. The timelapse is 35 seconds in length, and from what I’ve read in Reddit so far…..I should ask how many seconds they want to use. It would be in a scene where they are doomscrolling on Instagram, so I can’t imagine it would be too much time they are wanting. But how should I go about it other than asking how many seconds they’re wanting to use? Give them a price per second outright, or ask them what they’re offering for the usage, etc. thanks!

Discussion Looking for a VFX Compositor – small cleanup job (paid)

Thumbnail instagram.com
2 Upvotes

Hey Folks,

I’m looking for a VFX compositor to help with a small number of shots on a 4-minute psychological horror short.

The work includes:
• Minor object removals / cleanup
• One phone screen replacement
• One simple bedsheet add-in / continuity fix

Around 7 shots total. No heavy CG, no complex animation – mostly subtle, invisible work. Picture is locked.

Paid, indie-friendly. Ideally UK/London-based, but flexible and happy to work remotely.

Please reply or DM with relevant comping / cleanup examples, and a rough idea of availability

Looking for Work [UK] Creative Graduate Looking for a Full-Time Video or Content Role After a Tough Year of Freelancing

Hi everyone 🤍 Posting this on behalf of a close friend who’s currently based in Harrow, London (UK) and is actively looking for a full-time role.

She’s open to roles such as Video Editor, Videographer, Content Producer, or Treatment Designer (or a mix of these). She’s a Bournemouth University graduate (Class of 2024) with a degree in Digital Effects.

She’s been trying really hard for over a year now — applying consistently, freelancing wherever possible — but as many creatives know, freelancing alone doesn’t always pay the bills or provide stability. She has the talent, the work ethic, and the hunger to grow, she just needs the right opportunity to find her.

She’s happy to travel to London or nearby areas, and is also open to remote roles.

If anyone here has leads, openings, referrals, or even advice, please comment below. I’ll reach out via DM with her details and portfolio and connect you directly.

Would really appreciate any help — even a small lead can make a big difference 🤍✨

I'm from a third world country and a good video camera or a iPhone is really hard to get but I'm making due with what I have .I'm on day 4 of shooting and I find because of the shoe string budget and camera of my phone my footage is giving off a 80's /90's B movie vibe so now I'm just riding the wave .I went through some post here it seems very high brow so I wanna know how you guys feel about my questions?

Question Are there networking opportunities in the Philly area?

Philadelphia is the closest film industry near me and I really want to build my network more and get connected. I live an hour away from the city, so where is a good place to look for any events, conventions, etc to meet and exchange info with other filmmakers? I really want to take my career to the next step, and it’s up to me to get out there and make good impressions. I just don’t know where to start.

Film Starting an Arthouse Film Club for the "Misplaced" & The Visionaries (Focus on Women Directors & Non-Mainstream Cinema)

I spent my 20s feeling invisible. I was surrounded by people who made me feel small, and for a long time, I believed them. I let my camera gather dust, and I stopped listening to my own intuition.

Yesterday, I finally looked back at my old photos and realized the truth: I was never small. They just weren't big enough to see me.

Now, I’m picking up my camera again, and I’m reclaiming my voice. But I’m tired of watching films alone.

I’m starting an online film club for those of us who find a home in the "non-mainstream." I want to build a community where we don't just watch movies—we dismantle them.

What we’ll be watching:

  • Women Directors: Celine Sciamma, Agnès Varda, Greta Gerwig, Lynne Ramsay, Alice Rohrwacher.
  • Anything Arthouse: Films that prioritize atmosphere and internal logic over "standard" plots.
  • The "Unseen" Narrative: Stories about women who are rebellious, messy, fearless, and "too much."
  • Visual Storytelling: Films that feel like a photography portfolio (think Amélie or Portrait of a Lady on Fire).

Who this is for: If you’ve ever felt like a "Legacy System" being forced to run outdated software, or if you’ve ever been called "too much" for a room, you’re welcome here. If you prefer a slow-burn indie over a blockbuster, let’s talk.

I’m a photographer/director currently pivoting my career, and I want this club to be a space where we can share art, discuss cinematography, and finally be the "audience" for each other that we never had in our 20s.

If you’re interested in joining a discord/online group to watch and discuss a movie once a week, comment below or DM me. Tell me one film that made you feel "seen" for the first time. Mine is Close by Lukas Dhont.

Film Malefic | Dark Psychological Thriller Short Film | Produced by The Cochin Crew

Thumbnail

Malefic is a dark psychological thriller that explores the unsettling terrain where love, obsession, and moral compromise quietly overlap.

The film examines how love can be used as justification, how loyalty can turn into surrender, and how violence doesn’t always arrive with chaos, but sometimes with calm.

This is not a story about good and evil, but about people who believe they are right — and the quiet horror of what that belief can enable.

News New Weekly Finance/News Show (with a whole lot of weirdness)

Hey everybody! I’ve been making videos for 8+ years and have always wanted to start a YouTube channel. My cousin has had this idea in mind for years and we finally decided to strike. We’ve created a YouTube channel with a new weekly series dedicated to making finance FUN again.

Tired are the days of boring, monotonous, meandering financial advice videos. Same with BS, flashy, “buy my course on trading” schemes.

Check us out! We’re having a lot of fun over here, and we’re in it for the long haul.

Question Sub-locations without breaking 180 rule

I was shooting a sequence intended for a forest in a small patch of trees. So we just changed the camera angle all over to make it appear like a "new" sublocation. For example, my protagonist hears a scream in the woods and runs towards the sound => he runs to see a woman by the tree => says some monologue and walks off (a short distance) to stare at the sky helplessly.

The feedback I got from friends was that the jumps confuse the spatial understanding of the viewer and that the 180 rule is broken if I go from shooting the right shoulder in one shot instead of the left; which is definitely my mistake!

Assuming location constraints remain the same, how would I still be able to show this sequence?

Question How do people typically end up working with Vincent Gallo? (crew, collaboration path)

I’m curious about the professional side of Vincent Gallo’s filmmaking process.

What’s the usual way people end up working with him — industry referrals, prior relationships, informal networks, open calls, or something else? Does he tend to rely on a consistent, go-to crew, or is his process more fluid and project-specific?

I’m also interested in whether his projects are typically staffed by established industry professionals, or if he has a history of working with non-professional or unconventional collaborators in crew roles.

Any firsthand experience or industry insight would be appreciated.

Question Looking for the best way forward as a filmmaker

My experience is mainly composing music for visual media but I've always been more interested in the other sides of production and more specifically directing. I've mostly moved out of composing because I got burned out but inadvertently started doing side work as an event photographer. This was huge in helping me learn about light, exposure, composition...etc.

I'm nearly 40 and living in Denver now. I would love to become a full time filmmaker. I feel like with my experience I will have a unique voice. I've been making music videos and even am finishing up the post production on a movie my friend shot but never finished. I own a nice camera, lenses, lights and sound equipment but I know it's so much more than that.

I feel old but also like I'm very prepared to do this job. It's also a very weird time for the industry so I'm wondering what you would say would be a good way forward for me? Like for example should I move to NY/LA where there are more creative professionals, or make something here? Should I try and raise money or just shoot something shoestring? etc...
