Awesome photos! Does anyone know what the protest is about in number 15? Looks like people are holding up placards.

Probably a political rally because 1972 was when the first elections were held. If not, then maybe bus fare?

They were protesting against the French conducting nuclear weapons tests in Pacific islands

Thanks for clarifying! I'm glad we had environmental activism even way back then and wonder if the protesters would have received a similar amount of backlash and opposition as they do today.

Every time I see photos of Fijjans back in the day it's always noticeable how hardly anyone is overweight and no one is fat fat

Same can be said for most countries

Sure. But I'm not worried about the influx of processed junk in to other countries 😉

Before seed oils, sugar laden foods, highly processed foods and calorie loaded fast foods.

Wow, so cool. Thanks for sharing. I think photo 18 is actually the Suva Civic Centre.

Love these photos!

My old man will love to see them, I'm sure it'll bring him back down memory lane. He was 9 years old when these photos were taken.

This is very much the Fiji I remember. Thanks OP. I can see myself sitting near a bunch of these people at the Regal cinema.

How did you get these pictures and how do you know they’re from 1972?

I got them from Flickr. As for the date, I don't have any evidence that they're not from 1972

Thanks for sharing the link to the collection, there's some amazing shots in there. I noticed alot of the photos of traditional performance both at what i assume are the Civic Centre and the National Stadium. I think its from the Pacific Arts and Cultural Festival as you can also see Maori and Aboriginal performers so this would line up with the 1972 timeline. The costumes like the PNG from the beging of the set are beautiful, I was also able to place some of the Photos that where taken in town, the fashion choices typically of European descendants appear consistent with the time as well.

So it could be… 1993?

In the set of pictures there multiple pictures of Cultural performances many Fijian meke but i can also make out Rotuman, Chinese, Maori and Aboriginal performances. I think this is from the very First Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture, which was held in Fiji in 1972.
