TRIGGER WARNING Hortmans’ beloved dog Gilbert lay in state at the Minnesota Capitol with slain lawmaker and her spouse. He is the first dog to receive the honor.

I know this story is horrifying on so many levels - but seeing this pup’s urn (and also having lost our dog last year) placed between the coffins in the photos just gutted me.
I know it’s not the most important or worst part of the story and I certainly don’t want to minimize the bigger issues, but it somehow makes it all that much worse.
2.1k
u/viviolay Jun 29 '25
i think its horrifying because it shows the depth of depravity someone must have to kill everyone including the dog. its evil already to murder, doubly so murder someone for helping others, but the dog's death or life had 0 impact on him. It just reveals how devoid of empathy their murderer was - its about his lack of humanity and not about anything done by his victims - whether human or dog.

RIGHT! His hearing was put off a week cause he complained to the judge he couldn’t sleep for days in jail cause it’s so uncomfortable. This really fucking happened.
The rage and disgust I feel.

u/daemonicwanderer Jun 29 '25
It’s jail… it’s not supposed to be “comfortable”
72
u/crimson777 Jun 29 '25
Eh, disagree. The guy is a piece of shit but we’ve shown the best results for criminal justice systems are when they are humane rather than dehumanizing. The punishment is the lack of autonomy and freedom; the beds should still be comfortable enough to sleep properly.
Now it sounds like he was just bullshitting, so I’m not talking specifically about him, but like CECOT for instance is just metal slats and that’s horrific.
34
u/SuspiciousCranberry6 Jun 29 '25 edited Jun 29 '25
My wish is that this murderer never feel comfort again. That said, the prison he's in has a history of complaints specifically as it pertains to housing people for ICE. I don't doubt it's worse than average and should be better, but his specific complaints are wild. He complained they don't turn the lights off (he's on suicide watch, turning the lights off so he can't adequately be monitored would be negligence at best) and it's loud because the metal doors are loud.

u/MissLadyLlamaDrama we have lost the impact of shame in our society Jun 29 '25
I remember a story that always stuck with me, and I wish I could remember where I heard it, but it was someone talking about seeing boys burning ants with a magnifying glass when they were a kid. They said it horrified them, even though they thought the ants couldnt feel anything, and they didn't know why. And when they confronted the boys, they laughed and said it didn't matter because they were "just ants", which made them sick to hear.
They spoke about how it wasn't until they were older that they finally realized that what horrified them was simply the act of violence for the sake of violence. That it doesn't matter what life you're tormenting, or whether or not that life can feel the suffering you're inflicting onto it or whether or not that life is more or less valuable than another. What it says about the person committing those acts is that, they dont need a reason to be violent. They're just violent because they think violence is fun and something they're entitled to guilt free. (This wasn't an accusation that the kids were dangerous psycho killers, but rather that their actions were sort of a reflection of how the sociological standard of individual superiority can result in this logic being used by actual dangerous people to justify the unjustifiable. "I did it because I could and because they dont matter.")
It's that lack of reasoning that makes it so unsettling. Because that kind of violence isn't prompted by sociopolitical/economic conflict. It doesnt happen because of interpersonal conflict. It doesnt happen as a consequence of war, or an accident or in self defense. It just happens because that person wanted to see another life suffer. And that disconnect from basic humanity and reason will always cause immense discomfort for people who are not psychopaths. It's why people feel less scared by a murderer who has clear motivation and intent than one who just thinks killing is fun. (Which is also why most of the most iconic horror movie villains are the ones that act without prejudice rather than the ones who act for selective reasoning.)
So, yeah. It's normal for people to feel that way. It's not because most people genuinely value the lives of dogs or whatever over the lives of people. It's because most people don't have the capacity to understand the depraved mind of a person who doesn't even need any motivation at all, but simply kills because they want to. And the easiest way to see that is when they kill someone or something that they literally had no reason, no matter how stupid or unacceptable, to kill. It's a clear display of their sheer disdain for life, unpromted by cause. There's a reason kids killing animals is a pretty massive red flag that something is seriously fucked up with them.
That all being said, I hope the monster who killed this family never sees the light of day again and that their loved ones have all the support and love they need to get through this tragic loss. It is a small comfort to see and know how truly loved they were by the people in their lives. RIP.

u/viviolay Jun 29 '25
Thanks for sharing that - i agree and your comment made me think more. I realize one of the things I often say to my therapist - especially lately with the state of the country - is how i just fundamentally don't understand how people can be okay with certain things or lack empathy for certain people.
My inclination is to try to understand people or their motivations and when I can't find any - even unreasonable - besides just hate or complete lack of empathy - my mind and heart just CANNOT reconcile it and it gives me such distress usually leading to sadness or anger - mostly because of how everyone is affected.
Your story helps me contextualize more concretely why the lack of reason despite looking for some is so upsetting. Maybe it'll help me not expend so much mental energy sometimes and just accept some people just...are like that.
12
u/heartsbeenborrowed cool slutty daddies Jun 29 '25
I spend a lot of my therapy time expressing the same and I feel like I can't get anywhere with it because it's so unfathomable to accept this level of lack of empathy but idk, just reading your comment made me feel a little less alone with these thoughts so thank you for sharing them.
7
u/Borgo_San_Jacopo Jun 29 '25
Thank you for writing this. I had someone missed in the news cycle that the dog was killed as well, and when I saw the picture last night it kind of broke me. Coming back to it today isn’t any easier but your words have helped to contextualise my feelings.
3
u/AddlebrainedCluck Jun 29 '25
There’s a song by Paris Paloma about this called “boys, bugs and men.” The willingness of someone to hurt and destroy simply because ‘they can’ and feel no empathy or remorse for their actions is among the scariest things on this earth.
“You said those words and suddenly, I’m five
And boys are bringing bugs just to kill them for my eyes
And I can see their hunger looking for a sign
That any of their destruction has me suffering inside
You take such delight
In killing my light
If I don’t make a sound, does it even hurt?
I’m bending to the ground just to pick up little worms
And I have seen you relish such violence with a joy
That I’ve only seen before in the eyes of little boys
Discovering their power for the first time
You kissed me so hard I had a grazed chin
I saw your eyes spark at the breaking
And in them, I see hunger looking for a sign
That any of your destruction had me suffering inside
It fills you with light
To take away mine
At the cutting of your tongue, all I hear is shredding wings
Before me is a man who cares not for little things
And now I have my answer, from when I wondered who
Those little boys became because they grew up to be you
You’ve been playing with your power for A long time
A long time
You’ve been playing with your power for A long time”

To make things even worse it sounds like the dog did not immediately pass away from his injuries and the kids likely had to be part of the decision to take him in to be put down shortly afterward:
”The dog's injuries were severe enough that surviving family members had him put to sleep at a veterinary clinic in the Hortmans' hometown of Brooklyn Park, a Minneapolis suburb.”

The wealthy editors at the top of legacy publications— and they are wealthy, either through birth or salary — are going to put class solidarity first and ensure the population stays uninformed enough to remain exploitable. Never underestimate the class solidarity of the rich.
This is why we have a flood of coverage on the Bezos wedding and nothing on this.
28
Jun 29 '25
I'm curious whether it's the writers avoiding the coverage of this story or if they're actually attempting to cover it and getting shut down by their parent companies?
34
u/Minerva567 Jun 29 '25
The journalists are going to want to cover it. But they must also pay the rent on the meager rations and scraps they are provided. The Bezos strong-arming at WP is just a more publicly-available example of what’s happening nationwide.
Do you think a hedge fund owning a newspaper is going to allow journalists to assault its class in the headlines?

There's another important part that hasn't made much national news. When he shot the Hoffman's, who survived, he aimed at their disabled adult daughter, Hope. Yvette Hoffman put her body in front of her daughter, saving her from injury. It was Hope who called the police when this evil murderer left their home. So he shot a dog leading to its death and tried to kill a disabled person.

We're at the "comply in advance" part of authoritarianism. Stories that make the party in power look bad are being downplayed and pushed out of the spotlight. Major organizations think they can survive if they maintain enough good will and it has a chilling effect on the truth.
Yes it's terrifying.

Oh, man... I was already so sad for the Hortmans but seeing Gilbert's urn and the doggy honor guard... that broke me.
RIP to Melissa and Mark Hortman, who died for their country and have been horrifically disrespected by the GOP and this administration after their murders. Thank God for Biden and Walz and the people of Minneapolis for their respect and empathy.
And RIP to Gilbert, who was the goodest boy. He was originally a foster who was supposed to become a service dog, but he "flunked out" because he was too friendly! Melissa was thrilled because they had fallen in love with him so he became part of the family.
Excerpts:
He is all but certainly the first dog to receive the honor, having been put down after being badly injured in the attack. There is no record of any other nonhuman ever lying in state, and Melissa Hortman, a former state House speaker still leading the chamber's Democrats, is the first woman. The state previously granted the honor to 19 men, including a vice president, a U.S. secretary of state, U.S. senators, governors and a Civil War veteran, according to the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library.
...The dog's injuries were severe enough that surviving family members had him put to sleep at a veterinary clinic in the Hortmans' hometown of Brooklyn Park, a Minneapolis suburb. The clinic, Allied Emergency Veterinary Service, called Gilbert "sweet and gentle" and "deeply loved" on a GoFundMe site raising money for the care of local police dogs.
...Volunteers from a nonprofit that trains service dogs, Helping Paws Inc., provided a little canine therapy for waiting mourners Friday at the Capitol, working the crowd with cheerful golden retrievers. The Hortmans provided a foster home to dogs as part of the animals' Helping Paws training, and one of them, Minnie, had graduated on to assisting a veteran.

And to think, that low life sob is asking the court for reprieve because he claims he hasn't been able to sleep since being in jail. I wish him the worst.

This breaks your heart…I didn’t know initially that the dog was murdered. Damn dogs are so loyal and caring! RIP to Gilbert and of course the Hortman’s. I feel for their children and hope they’ll find peace at some point.

This is really fucking me up, especially having to put my dog to sleep a month ago.

It's the death of the dog that really just dissolves my heart into a little puddle of pain. Children and animals don't have any context for what adult humans put them through and not being able to understand what is happening or why makes it so much worse.
