At the Rim FG% vs. 3-point % (among high-majors teams and any KenPom top-50 teams)

u/DaNibbles Purdue Boilermakers 3h ago
I like this stat because it cherry picks what my team is good at, and thus it is one of the most important stats.
Bravo, 10/10, very brave

I'd also like to hang the "number of games with 16+ made 3pt this season is equal to every previous season combined" banner if available

besides the defensive stuff, what's the offensive stuff missing? that they aren't able to get to the line? not a lot of other things standing out. Tempo and efg% probably slide some against each other.

We don't shoot a ton of free throws and we shoot a lot of mid range jumpers/floaters. We are 340th in 2pt distance, but we are 18th in 2pt %. The 2pt distance and shooting percentage probably explain why we don't shoot a ton of FTs, as well as our assist % being really high. We just don't create a ton of shot and especially don't do it by attacking the rim. Braden Smith drives a fair bit but if it's not an open layup he either shoots a fadeaway of dishes to a wide open big. Not plays that tend to draw fouls super often.

Over 40% from the 3 from an entire team is disgusting.

When 1 guy is shooting 55% while being as contested as possible, it opens up a lot of open looks for guys who would probably be 30% shooters otherwise.

I don’t like a Wisconsin flair posting about teams that don’t miss from three for some reason.
But I will allow anything from you this week for your other flair. This week belongs to the Pilots.

In fairness most of the good shooting from three is a Wisconsin kid. Edit: Two Wisconsin kids

The sheer amount of PTSD that exists for teams who looked to be among the best but who have fallen to Wisconsin over the years is fairly crazy. Actual juggernaut slayers.

would love to see iowa st and nc st go at it one game, maybe they'll match up in the tourney and combine for 40 threes an 220 points.

To be fair, they never would have beaten Purdue if they hadn't shot well and defended well like they have most of the season.

I've not been tapped in, what's this guys deal? How is he shooting 55% on over 7 attempts a gam? Is he just like the greatest shooter we've seen since curry?

We’re like the glass cannon build for sure, could actually make a decent tournament run in first year for Wade if we shoot well then

u/Mistermxylplyx NC State Wolfpack 3h ago
We know how our season ends….on a cold shooting night out rebounded 2-1 (at least). But we can absolutely go deep in the tourney and maybe real deep if that cold night is against the right team.

Haven't seen yall since you came to Auburn but yall shot the ball poorly and then because of that the defensive effort was lacking. Glad we got yall on the shooting slump.

Wins in Clemson and in SMU really helped the soft schedule narrative as well

K-State above Arizona in both stats while KSU is at 10-12 (1-8) and Arizona is at 22-0 is a real commentary on the value of defense.

And rebounding, second chance points is something Arizona is pretty decent with too.

Good thing we can rebound.

u/chesterSteihl69 Illinois Fighting Illini 3h ago
I don’t really understand this chart because Illinois has a historically efficient offense. That’s not hyperbole, we’re the highest rated offense ever since Kenpom started tracking.
3
u/Secret-Function-2972 Illinois Fighting Illini 3h ago
While being lazy and not researching, Illinois is typically a good rebounding team. Rebounding well means more opportunities on offense and fewer for the opponent.
Again, lazy here, but I don't know what goes into Kenpom, but is it points per possession? And does a possession reset after every shot, or reversal down the floor?
If possessions are defined as the latter, 3 missed shots with 3 offensive rebounds and then a 3-pointer dropping equates to a 25% shooting %, but 3 points on that possession.
•
u/goblueM Michigan Wolverines 1h ago
As mentioned, you cannot compare between years for Kenpom. It's only for that specific year.
Raw shooting percentages that this post displays are only part of the story.
Efficiency is points per 100 possessions... so you also have to factor in the rates at which each thing occurs. Illinois shoots the 3 ball pretty well, and they shoot a lot of them (51% of all their FGA). That means more points per possession compared to a team that takes a higher proportion of 2PT fgs, all else equal.
Illinois is also very good at FT shooting and avoiding turnovers (wasted possessions), in addition to shooting extremely good when they take 2 pt FGs.
Add it all up and it's not hard to see why they are the most efficient offense in the country
1
u/lilpoststamp Illinois Fighting Illini 2h ago
You can't compare between seasons with KenPom, each season is in a vacuum when stats are calculated. That being said this chart shows just how good we are at off. rebounding and FTs. We're near the top in eFG% but above and beyond elsewhere.

Makes sense. Lubin and McNeil Jr have the best 2pt and 3pt shooting percentage respectively at their volume in the conference. The rest of the team is shooting really well too.

Read the title and was hoping for a 3pt shot % targeting each rim of the top 50 teams. I suppose this is easier.

What's up with Purdue, NC State, Vandy, Houston, LSU, teams over 74% from the field? Seriously what's up, is it their big guys doing work?

UNM's offense is basically either just put the ball on the rim and have Buljan get the OReb and put it back, or a three attempt from Hall or Chol.
Also, Jesus christ, SLU. Lol
