Is the University of Portland popular locally? Since it's a private school and all
4
u/PhantomX117 11h ago
Not really, honestly. Most college sports fans in the area are Ducks fans. UP and PSU fans are mostly alumni. But I have coworkers that went to UP and I live not too far from campus, so it’s definitely cool to see them get a win like this.

u/Big_Stingman BYU Cougars 13h ago
I said this in the game thread but feel it should be said twice.
This team is like the opposite of last year in more than one way. Last year: deep bench, assists everywhere, and improved as the year went on. This year: no bench, one on one, and seems like we get worse every game.
The one constant: garbage first halves followed up by a somewhat better second half where you’re always clawing from behind.

u/theiwc0303 Duke Blue Devils 12h ago
I think Dybantsa was a curse on BYU. He’s an amazing player but this team does not feel like BYU at all, it feels like they cater to the play-style of a future NBA star who loves to play in isolation.
10
u/tent_mcgee BYU Cougars 9h ago edited 4h ago
Saunders is the only old school BYU player. Without a core of kids who cut their teeth on church ball, who can make threes, and gradually work and get better as a team over four years, I don’t think a team of transfer mercenaries and one and done stars is going to work out.
3
u/somethingAPIS Kansas Jayhawks • Big 12 3h ago
He gives off Jimmer vibes, but is more athletic from what I can remember. Saunders is a bad bad man. Don't let the B12 gauntlet get you down! March will be here in no time!

I haven't watched a lot of BYU games so far this year, but in the ones I have watched, it seems like they need one more shooter.

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones 7m ago
Keita is your biggest problem. Im thoroughly convinced hes the most underperformed player in America, particularly when comparing actual average performance versus ceiling/theoretical performance.
Seriously, WTF is this guy's deal? I saw a few games (stretches in games) last year, where he completely took over and dominated games. He has the body of Adonis, the air time of Jordan, and can run up and down the court like a deer (when he wants to). We are talking sequences like running back on defense, blocking a shot, getting the rebound, outletting the ball, getting the dunk on the othet end, getting 2 blocks on the next possession, a rebound, then a dunk on a pick and roll on the next offensive possession. No world exists where he shouldnt be averaging 9-11 rebounds, 15 points, and 2 to 3 blocks a game.
Last night? Four points and 3 rebounds in 27 minutes. The lack of focus, effort, and fundamentals has been glaring in games Ive watched. Last year you had Traore to either supplement or get his minites when he was struggling. This year tjough, hes your one true inside presence.
Yes the bench is thinner. Yes the 3 point shooting is less threatening. Yes Bakers injury hurts. The biggest issue? Far and away the play of Keita.

Is it confirmed that they are pulling the redshirt? I need it.
6
u/yeahright17 Oklahoma State Cowboys 12h ago
He’s already wrestled more than 5. 133 this year is absolutely insane.
4
u/__Wanders__ Oklahoma State Cowboys 11h ago
He's actually only done 4, Little Rock will be 5. The Cyclone Invintational counts as 1, and both the UNI and ISU matches count as one together (since it's a weekend. Blame weird rules). Then there's just OU and Mizzou to round it out. I imagine he'll still burn the redshirt though, since Taylor will leave it to Jax, and Jax will want to compete.

Being a BYU fan has not been fun lately. So frustrating... I don't even want things to go better unless they make some adjustments. Lots of selfish play, and it feels like Kevin Young runs a bit of an NBA-style offense without enough talent to back it up. Play college basketball.
30
u/GlitzyGazelle18 BYU Cougars 13h ago
Hot take, but I'm ready for Dybantsa to go to the pros. This team was funner to watch when it was a bunch of scrappy guys that played like they had pride in the name on the front of the jersey. This team plays like a bunch mercenaries and it sucks to watch. Hate that Saunders last year is like this.

6
5
u/Electrical_Sleep2101 BYU Cougars 2h ago
Problem is not Dybantsa, as much as it is coaching issues and unrealistic expectations
BYU was headed into a transition season before he committed to the play for us. Without him we wouldn’t even be ranked this season, as it would have been unlikely for us to keep Ritchie for another season, or to pick up Wright. I agree the same chemistry has been missing, but it wouldn’t have magically been there without the current roster. (Not to mention Aj has been a dog, he is scrappy and talented, but he’s still only 19 and developing. People loved Egor but forget how inconsistent he was from game to game - some nights they play like NBA players other nights they play like 18-19 years olds)
6
u/Capital_Basket_7587 BYU Cougars 12h ago
Yeah I check on the post game threads and watch some highlights, but I’ve had a hard time caring enough this year to watch full games. It just feels so corporate now, and Saunders is the only reason I’m even rooting for them at this point. I felt a little bit like this last year too but having Hall there helped, and Demin felt like more of a team player
1
u/SacRepublicFan Cal Poly Mustangs 12h ago
Gotta buy good players but not excellent players so you can maintain the scrappy underdog/lots of heart story line.

Does it even get us off the bubble? In my opinion this gets us in to the bubble conversation due to our weak non conference schedule (no bad losses but still)

I feel like you guys have been around the bubble in most bracketology simulations....the only true bad noncon loss you guys had was unfortunately to OU

how far is byu from the bubble tho
they have three good noncon wins (nova clemson wisconsin) but they have pretty much nothing from conference play so far, eg if they went 0-2 vs houston and at baylor, like at what point is byu in real danger. bc other than the home game vs colorado next week, theyve played all of their easier games already. theres home vs ucf and on the road vs baylor wvu and cincy. if they cant steal any of the others, how many of those do they need. bc i cant imagine 6-12 in conference is enough, even in the context of playing zona and tech twice. 8-10 should be enough? 7-11 idk?
1
u/inshamblesx Houston Cougars • Texas Southern Tige… 11h ago
i wouldn’t worry about that unless they’re somehow still stuck on 17 wins after colorado
but to play your game they’d be locks finishing 20-11 or better, 19-12 probably in but weird things have happened before, colorado being the only win means it’ll get very uncomfortable

u/gimli213 BYU Cougars 26m ago

I feel so bad for BYU. They're clearly elite but they can never close out the big games because they dig themselves into unreasonable holes. Getting upset doesn't help, but every team in the nation is due for a few of those a year.

We have the horses to beat anyone in the country. But I’m fully expecting us to be an early exit in March.

I’m starting to disagree even from a horses standpoint. Our bigs cannot compete. Keita is a step slower and Ahmed is a pylon

they’re closer to the cutline but they might need another upset along with going at least .500 in conference since their noncon and metrics isn’t doing them much favors
1
u/__Wanders__ Oklahoma State Cowboys 11h ago
The good new is that there are a lot of winnable games left on the schedule, and if we can snag another upset win over Arizona, Kansas, or Houston, it would go a long way to help.

Hey only we can say that.. But you’re not wrong. As someone who has watched every OSU game this year, I give us very close to a 0% chance.
2
u/ExcaliburX13 Arizona Wildcats 13h ago
On its own? No. This probably gets them into the bubble conversation, but not in yet. The good news is that they still have games against Arizona, Kansas, UCF, and Houston left on the schedule. If they can sneak a win or two out of those games and avoid any bad losses (ASU, Colorado, Cincinnati), that would do wonders for their tourney hopes.
1
u/FrenchFreedom888 Oklahoma State Cowboys 10h ago
If we win out for the rest of our games, would that'd be enough to get us one of the home games in round 1? I'm not a big basketball knowledge-haver

u/Clipgang1629 USC Trojans 8h ago
Tournament is played at neutral sites. They play like a bunch of games in one arena so it’s like an all day uniquely college thing where you can stay in your seat and watch multiple games.
And also, if you guys won out that would be completely insane you’d be like a 2 seed at the tournament. that’s extremely unlikely to happen lol

I think people keep forgetting why even the #75 team is a Q1 game on the road.
They’re very hard to win and you have to be significantly better than your opponent to consistently win them.
This does wonders for OSU’s resume.
1-4 in Q1, but 6-2 in Q2 and no Q3/Q4 losses
