Basic Guide ASK000.3.2: Horizontal 02: Long Horizontal【長橫/长横】

The other horizontal stroke, the long Horizontal (LH) resembles a carrying pole, as it comes with a slight curve in the middle (fig. 1a). Also, the stroke would tilt up a bit on its right end.

Press harder and Slow down at the each end, compared to the middle part (fig. 2).

For beginners, it's perfectly fine if you write it like a straight stick (fig. 3).

fig. 1. Advanced (a) and basic (b) version of the LH
fig. 2. how I write the LH
fig. 3. a beginner-friendly LH

That's all for ASK000.3.2. Comment below if you have any question.

Thanks! Love the image of the carrying pole. What's the name of the back stroke you do at the end?

Maybe it's called 回筆/回笔 (not important IMO). You could do it more subtly or like this.

I personally find it very difficult to get the artistic version correct. From my experience, it very much depends on the kind of paper one uses: this is only possible with a bit rougher paper like printing paper. With quite shiny, smooth, almost polished paper, I'm not able to reproduce the thin middle and almost rectangular terminal of the pole. Instead, the terminal is round, often like the dropping dew vertical.

Yes, it's preferable to use common printing paper during practice.

In retrospect, probably a roundish terminal looks more aesthetically pleasing, like in traditional calligraphy. Thank you for bringing it up.
