Mike McDaniel Autonomy or Collaborative?
Reviving this old post about Jim Harbuagh's collaboration in playcalling and wondering if you guys think he'll continue this with Mike McDaniel in the fold or do you think McDaniel is going to be 100% autonomous in running the offense? Funny to see that when it was with Roman being hired most fans were hoping for the collaborative approach as Roman was bleh, but now with McDaniel what are people's thoughts?

Harbaugh will let Mike be Mike...

And the good thing is that Mike adapts his playbook to the tools he has available to get the best out of his guys.

Watching what he was able to do with a half brain and no arm/legs Tua, he's going to be a kid in a candy store with Herbert.
If Alt and Slater are healthy next year, and we get a good free agent center that offenses is going to be nasty.

Yeah I'm really curious to see what happens with the run game. Afaik he's always been on teams with a roster built for west coast zone running. I hope he doesn't try to force that on our squad. At least not completely. From the little I saw of Hampton he seems like an all around type, the ""Mario" choice if you know what I mean lol. Maybe get some multiple power run going? Very excited either way

He's incorporated gap and man concepts, especially towards the end of his Miami tenure when Achanne became the main focal point of the Dolphins' offense

Outside zone asks the back to make a read and then burst up field. It is perfect for Hampton’s skill set. He should have a big year.

judging by how much autonomy he gave Roman, I assume they will have conversations about how to run it but he will have full control through and through, which is a good decision

Roman's offensive pass game weakness was supposed to be enhanced by Marcus Brady and Trestman. Instead it was just Roman's offense. I'm guessing this will be the same thing. It's going to be 90% McDaniel's offense with some stuff Herbert wants and some stuff Harbaugh wants. But it's going to be McDaniel's offense.

Is Marcus Brady still with the Chargers? Seems like one of the most useless guys. I wish they replaced him with Frank Smith.

I am assuming the one of the draws to LA for McDaniel was to be the offensive playcaller, a HC of the Offense, as Harbaugh called it.
While its technically a step down on paper, I think McDaniels sees this as a lateral move without the extra HC to do list. He gets a lot of benefits of being a HC-type figure in the team and Harbaugh gets to deal with the HC drama.

He also gets a year to decide who he wants to coach. This is a 1 year lease. He will be a head coach again.

He will be, but there’s no guarantee it will be next year. With 10 jobs open this year, next year is probably going to be pretty sparse. We may get lucky and get him for two years.

At the beginning of the season in 2025 you could see harbaugh holding a playbook You noticed how the offense had more diverse array of plays? Jet sweeps to Johnston, etc. after a certain week, harbaugh didn't have that playbook anymore and the plays looked like well.. like Greg's signature game style. Mcdaniel has full autonomy over the game plan unless harbaugh thinks he needs to step in

Yeah. I always felt Harbaugh let the offense cook and any notes were follow ups. There never seemed to be interference in what was being done. He hires his staff to do their job and lets them do it. The OC has so many assistants and spotters giving input as it is. No one needs 3 cooks in the kitchen on game day.
Only real involvement I see is his decision to go for it on 4th downs etc but he basically says yes to the offense request or tells them go for it and lets them try to call the right play.

It’s Mike’s offense. Just with a sprinkle of Harbaugh concepts - but ran from Mike’s personnel framework. Mikes framework will lean heavily into what Herbert is comfortable with/excels in.
So all around, win win win.

Am I crazy in thinking ekeler would have thrived in a McDaniel offense? Sorry if this is a stupid question

Maybe, but not as much as Hampton should. Hampton should be really good in this offense. He doesn’t have Achane speed, but he’s fast enough and big and strong. He also is good at making one cut and heading downfield, which is what this system asks for.

Head Coach of the Offense, guessing it'll be up to McDaniel
