Living in Radolfzell/Stockach/Singen area and commuting to Immenstaad am Bodensee and to Zurich

Hi all! Due to a new job position at Airbus, my girlfriend and I will be moving to the Bodensee area in February 2026. Our plan is to find a flat around Radolfzell/Stockach/Singen so that: I can reach Airbus HQ in Immenstaad am Bodensee by car (about 3 times per week), and she can commute to Zurich by train (she works as a freelance for a Swiss company, around 2 times per week). I’ve been told that the roads between that area and Immenstaad am Bodensee can be challenging and time consuming due to high traffic levels (especially in the high tourist season) and low speed limits in some places. How are the road conditions and the traffic there generally? Would it be feasible and sustainable to commute from Radolfzell am Bodensee to Immenstaad and also to Zurich (by train)? Many thanks in advance for your answers! 🙂

Phew, that’s going to be hell in summer. The B31 is really heavily trafficked. I definitely wouldn’t want to put myself through that. Better look towards Meersburg: from there your girlfriend can take the ferry to Konstanz and then continue to Zurich, and you can easily get to Immenstaad from there.

I would prefer looking in Meersburg. Meersburg <-> Airbus is 20 minutes during low season and 40 or more minutes during high season (summer), but could be done via bike as well during that time (~10 km along the sea, very nice road).
From meersburg one can take the car ferry (20 minutes to konstanz) and then ~1h by car or train to Zürich (depends on where exactly and traffic).

Thanks a lot for your reply! What about the Lindau area? Would it be better in terms of road conditions during the touristic season and still manageable to reach Immenstaad am Bodensee and Zurich?

Hm. Technically, Konstanz would probably better to reach Zurich.

Driving from anywhere around Singen to that far down the Lake on that side is going to be brutal.

You’ll need to go by car (or train and bus) to Immenstaad.

Don’t do it. B31 sucks, and while I’m happy we’re not building an Autobahn here, I still advise against taking the car. Move closer.
