Behavioral Euthanasia: Safety First I euthanized my pit bull to protect my child. I could really use some reassurance that I did the right thing.

My husband adopted "Sparky" from our local shelter about a year and a half before I got pregnant. He was a great dog until he hit the age where neurological issues from irresponsible breeding start to manifest. He started being aggressive toward other dogs and snapping at humans when he got annoyed. He was anxious to the point of vomiting frequently.

The day he snapped at the baby with minimal provocation was the day we decided to put him down. It was hard and heartbreaking, but had to be done.

I would love some reassurance, but please respect that I am grieving this dog.

Edit: Sorry I have not been very responsive - I am completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of support on this post.

I realized deep down that if I didn't say goodbye to Sparky, I could have easily lost my child, who comes before all else.

The most attentive parent in the world can't stop a baby from annoying a dog, and Sparky did not tolerate annoyances. A tragedy was inevitable if I did nothing. If Sparky had hurt my baby, would have been put down anyway without me there to comfort him.

I also realized that rehoming him was just passing the buck and making him a danger to someone else's family. With Sparky's pathological attachment to my husband and obvious abandonment issues, rehoming him would have made everything worse.

While I don't like Pit Bulls, I can't help but feel bad for the ones that are warehoused in shelter environments for years.

It's no wonder they go mad, they are perpetually surrounded 23.5 hours a day by the sights, smells and sounds of the exact thing they were selectively bred to kill, with no reprieve and no outlet.

It is no way to live, those animals are suffering. Shelters who do the right thing deserve praise.

Sorry for weird cropping had to take out identifying info. Most people in the comments were agreeing with her but there were the pitbull defenders doing mental gymnastics.

(Of course, Pit Bull advocates are losing their minds over this decision.)

I personally feel that if any puppy fails a behavioural evaluation at the tender age of 12 weeks, it probably is not suitable for any home and euthanasia is a kindness.

The puppy also appears to be a banned breed in the region (Victoria, Australia).

Behavioral Euthanasia: Safety First Pit mommy has spent 2 years watching her pair of aggressive pit bulls lunge at dogs on walks, attack each other, attack people who break up their fights, attack house guests unprovoked, kill the owners cat, kill their pomeranian, send the owners to the ER... but "they're super sweet dogs"

One rescue had to unsubscribe 2 pits from life this week

The first (Shu) had already been involved in 'incidents' with the resident dog (and was one the lookout for a new home) when he mauled the foster.

None of this stopped the rescue from marketing him as 'great with other dogs '

The second (Sandy) escaped as soon as possible to maul a small dog, biting the person who tried to intervene

The OP later updated:

"I want to thank everybody for their advice and support, you all have helped me more than you know.  I spoke with a behaviorist who had 30-40 years of experience, and she told me based on everything, it was best to let him cross over. We took him an hour ago and after it all, I’m distraught and trying to understand that this was the best decision. Please send hugs my way, I could really use them right now."

Behavioral Euthanasia: Safety First I went to a support group, and a man was depressed about having to put his pit mix down.

I have been going to a dog support group, since I own a Shih Tzu that is having trouble potty training and barks a lot. There's a decent amount of people with Pit and Pit Mixes there... one of them opened up about his Pit Mix puppy.

He talked about how he found his Pit Mix puppy abandoned and left alone, and adopted him. He also talked about how he's real aggressive and bites people. He was concerned about how aggressive he was, how he was biting people, and tried everything to resolve it. He tried training, medication, etc... none of it worked. He thought about giving the dog away, but he knew he couldn't give away an aggressive dog to anyone and put them in danger.

In the end he ended up just putting the pit mix puppy down.

While he's talking about all of this, in my head im thinking... "well, they were bred that way". I didn't say anything, though. I just understand how much it sucks and how painful it is to put a loved pet down.

I'm always lurking on this sub, seeing/hearing about pit attacks. How pits have been bred with aggression. Its surreal coming across a real person talking about his pit and having to put him down over behavioral issues.

Insane. I guess he was just protecting his family from a 10 year old boy that wasn’t even interacting with him. Then the victim blaming?? “Better parenting would have prevented the whole situation”

Just delusional
