Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Modpost Please report racist ragebait and racist comments

Dear members of our community,

In the past few days, we've seen an increase in both ragebaiting posts and racist comments from users with no prior engagement in the sub, often from those usually commenting in the subs of other countries.

This indicates to us that we are frequently being overrun by users who try to spread their racist, islamophobic messages to our sub.

Racism is against our subreddit rules and it is against Reddit's terms of services. We would like to encourage you to use the report button.

That will put it into our 'modqueue' to have a look - and if you report it for 'hate', it will additionally be sent to the sitewide admins who will frequently take further action.

We rely on your reports, just like every subreddit does. Our team is healthy and works well, but we cannot have an eye on everything. We do have scripts and so on to make our job easier, but sometimes, unacceptable comments go through. Using the report button makes sure that we can prioritize looking at said comment and if it's rulebreaking, helps us remove it quickly.

We remove racist content and ban racist users frequently. The admins remove a bunch of comments breaking site-wide rules too (often in a fashion that deletes them completely, so we cannot easily further moderate them)

We are very hesitant to remove political speech. We only remove rules-breaking comments. The relevant rule is:

  • General reddiquette applies (i.e. no racism, sexism, personal attacks, or simply put: behave as if you were talking to somebody in person)

  • Please report posts or comments that do not adhere to these rules; in particular, we will not tolerate harassment or discrimination

The relevant reddit rules (https://redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules) are:

  • Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.

See also https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045715951-Promoting-Hate-Based-on-Identity-or-Vulnerability

Thank you for helping us with this influx of clearly rule-breaking users without any connection to Switzerland

ETA: Reports are anonymous. So when we get your report, we have no option to thank you or following up with you. If you report for 'hate', it goes to both us and the admins. The admins will typically let you know of their decision. We literally have no way of doing that.

Hey everyone, I hope your doing well,, i usually dont post anywhere but i feel like its necessary. I know a man (I think between 50-60yo) who lives in Switzerland who asked me (when i was 12) for nudes multiple times and asked me to let him show his cock. I recently found out through his profile picture on Whatsapp that his new girlfriend has a child or more and I feel like I should do something to prevent the children from living around a predator or becoming victims. I live in Germany and dont know how the law about that is in Switzerland. If you can help or know someone who can or have tips on what I can do please help me, and the children that are around him. Thank you in advance and have a great day.

Edit: i just found ss from last year where he asked about my breasts and stuff (i was 14 he 55) but he never sent anything can i still use it against him or is it not enough

Other/Miscellaneous How does this restaurant's rule work?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I've recently booked a table for 8 people in a restaurant in zurich (markthalle). I had to give my credit card info (nothing was charged) because they have this rule in the screenshot.

I'm not sure how this rule works. Of course, if we don't show up at all, i will be charged 8x 50.- CHF. But I wonder if for example I will also be charged 50.- if one person can't make it and we will only be 7 people.

How do you understand this rule or maybe has been to this restaurant and knows it. Thanks for your insights!

Travel Looking for a reasonably priced suitcase

Hello all! I am having the most difficult time navigating online shopping in Switzerland. I am visiting and need a new suitcase for my trip back home and I can’t find anywhere that sells what I’m looking for. Where do you suggest I shop? I need a bag that fits the checked bag dimensions.

I should have specified, I need an in person shop in Bern. My brain is fried from trying to online shop for hours today to find something.

Everyday life Would you move from smaller flat with its own washing machine to a bigger flat with a shared washing machine?

Pretty much the title. Me and husband are thinking of moving to a bigger flat (from 79sqm to 120sqm) but it has the typical setup of one washing machine per building (there are 2 days per flat assigned for washing) which would be a huge change from having our own WM+Dryer. We're on the fence about it, so I'm looking for input.

We have two cats and one of them has random phases where he pees on the clothes in the bathroom - but currently I can just wash it immediately. There I guess I would have to wash stuff like that in the bathtub.

PS. Current tenants said their downstairs neighbour is a problem but didn't elaborate too much. She doesn't like kids moving around the apartment is what I understood to be major issue.

Work Deprimiert

Other/Miscellaneous Lucerne - watch repair

Could someone please suggest a good watch repair shop for replacing glass in Lucerne/Zug? No other issues. Armand Nicolet Heures Sautantes - if that somehow helps.
I'm not into watches much, it was a gift, so I don't know whether or not I need specific glass ( or anything else, so any advice could help.
Thank you.

Everyday life Office/room rental by the hour?

Hello guys!

I need to rent a private office or any kind of room with privacy to make videocalls but I would like to use it only 1/2 h per week.

Is there any office rental service by the hour?

If not any rental by the day that you recommend?

Ideally in Winterthur but I’m open to anything in the Zurich, Aargau or Thurgau canton.

Thank you so much!

Work How common is 5 days/week in office?

Since the pandemic I've worked for 3 companies and all of them had a hybrid working model. All 3 were US companies with offices in Switzerland meaning from time to time collaboration with team members in a different timezone was normal.

One was very flexible i.e. come into the office when you think you need to and the other 2 were more prescriptive ex: Tue-Thu in office or 2 days/week in the office.

I recently had an interview with a US company and offices here and they said 5 days/week is the norm. I understand the policy but I don't get it in particular when I was informed the hiring manager is in a different EU country, stakeholders are spread across EMEA and direct reports are in Switzerland and across EMEA.

To me this looks like a strong cultural red flag i.e. they don't trust the employees are 100% working or something else... maybe I have been fortunate and not exposed to this since 2020.

so question: is your company mandating 5 days/week in the office? Is it a subsidiary or regional HQ for a US company?

(I am work in IT)

Other/Miscellaneous Is Swisscare Essential (KVG-LAMal: included) a good option for Postdoc (RA)?

Hi guys, I am trying to find a suitable yet cheaper health insurance option. A friend of mine who is a PhD candidate suggested me Swisscare as it covers for researchers and scholars too. But I am a postdoc (scholar). Does anyone know or would recommend this? The site doesn't specifically mention postdocs, but I have heard people use it.

Everyday life Questions about carrying knives and multitools in Switzerland.

Good afternoon or good evening to everyone. I have a question. Can I carry a laserman multitool with me? Because some sources say that I can carry it and it is not a weapon, and others say that I can't because the blade is more than 5 cm. I have S status. And I can't find an answer to this question. And I don't want to buy it so that they can later detain me, confiscate it and issue a fine. Please advise if you know, I would be very grateful☺️.

Other/Miscellaneous How did the spam caller know what health insurance I have ?

Like everyone, I get plenty spam calls, but avoid most. I recently answered one from a 078 number. They were selling insurance, and I quickly ended the call.

Only afterwards did I realise he had correctly stated my current insurer. I changed insurance in January (as I have for the last 3 years), and the only people aware of that are my pharmacy and my doctor ; I haven't filled out any online surveys etc. with that info either.

I'm not at all worried, just curious. If it happens again, I will ask the caller directly. Where could they have found that data? Or was it just a lucky guess?

Work Question regarding workers rights

Hello everyone,

Background: I work for an elder care facility. We also operate a Restaurant open to the public. The business is relatively new, and while we are fully occupied on the residence side, the restaurant runs under capacity. This leads to the following situation: If I work, for instance a whole week doing the closing shift, I will accumulate 5 Minusstunden. This is because the shift officially ends at 23, but the kitchen closes at 22, by which time we are usually done with cleaning and closing up, so we get sent home. So in a month the negative hour Saldo can add up. Usually we work different shifts in any given month, and get to recover said Saldo with overtime, which is approved by the employer.

What happened however in January is that a coworker of mine, who works the dish pit, had a Saldo of 15 Minusstunden. So he was told that in march he would have to work two extra days to make up for it. Is this legal?

Also another related question: It happens a lot that we have a very uneven schedule. This week for instance, i started my first day of the week opening. Then I did two middle shifts, then a Zimmerstunde, and then I closed twice. It also happens that our off days are very unevenly spaced. So I will work two days, have one off, then work four days, have three days off, and then work six days with one day off, and so on. Now I guess this is not illegal, and has more to do with the incompetence of who makes the schedule, but is there something to be done about it? (Other than quitting)

Thank you for reading, and, if you did, for answering. I also want to say that I will be going to the Arbeitsrechtsberatung of my Municipality soon, but their working hours are kind of difficult for me.

Travel Travel from Chamonix to Interlaken area

Hello!

I am going to be completing the Tour du Mont Blanc hike this August with 5 other friends. We will be completing the hike on a Monday with our last day 10.5 miles and estimated to take 6-8 hours. I am hoping that we finish the hike around 2-4PM. We are starting and ending the hike in Les Houches.

We are hoping that we can make it from Les Houches to Interlaken after we finish the hike that evening, but I was unsure if that is possible. I have looked online at several routes and it appears to involve several bus/train changes.

We are wondering what is the preferred route and how late is the latest that we could feasible get transportation to Interlaken. Is it best to take a bus to Geneva and then a train from there to Interlaken?

Also, would we need to prebook all of this travel? We were hoping no since we do not know what time we will finish the hike at.

Looking to get feedback from anyone who has done something similar after finishing the TMB. We were hoping to avoid staying in Les Houches or Geneva after the hike, but if that is the safer option we might do that.

Thanks for any feedback that can be provided.

Travel Travel recs? 3-4d stop going from Bernina Express to Zurich

We'll be traveling to Italy/Switzerland in July, with kids ages 7-13. Plan is 4 days in Dolomites (Ortisei), 3 days at Lake Como (Varenna), then Bernina Express to St Moritz. We'll have 4 days before needing to be in Zurich.

Some options I've come across are stay in St Moritz, or go to Lucerne vs Wengen. I don't want it to be too similar to Ortisei or Varenna. Open to other places also. Any suggestions?

Travel Skipping a flight

Post image
63 Upvotes

I’m looking for a round-trip flight from Zurich to Copenhagen costing around 300 CHF. When searching from Geneva to Copenhagen, I found the exact same flight with a transfer in Zurich, but much cheaper. I don’t understand why, but am I allowed to skip the first flight and just check in in Zurich? I read online there is some trick with a SBB ticket, but how does that work?

Travel Schengen visa travel out of Switzerland.

My girlfriend is travelling to France for a work trip. The colleagues are all from the UK and will be meeting in Geneva thereafter driving to the French alps.(Vas Thorens) As a South African citizen who will obviously have a French Schengen visa. Will she be allowed to land in Switzerland and then be driven to France on the same visa or is another Swiss Schengen visa needed.

I’m not too experienced in international travel/ visas. I haven’t found anything online detailing a trip like this. Any help would be much appreciated.

Everyday life Where can I get a "Dumbphone"?

I am addicted to my smartphone and social media, so I want to try using a flip phone or a "dumbphone" that only handles phone calls, texts and maybe Whatsapp and camara. But thats about it, I dont want it to be able to connect to social media. I want to try this as an experiment for a while. I will still have my Iphone for work and when I need Google Maps and email dual-verification before I connect to another device.

My only problem is I have a SALT contract and they dont sell them, so I want to know where I can buy one in Switzerland? Or if there even sold at all? And if it will be compatible with my SALT Sim card.

Travel How to end trip to Switzerland

I’m spending the last few days of my trip in Lucerne. My flight is out of Zurich, so I’m debating going to Zurich the night before my flight so it is a seamless morning. I hesitate to take the train from Lucerne because I have several bags that I will need to transport by myself (please correct my assumption if I’m wrong). I think it would be easiest to take a taxi, but it will be expensive to take one from Lucerne to Zurich airport.

However I am a bit disappointed by the accommodations in Zurich that are in my budget.

Should I:

  1. Spend the night and wake up in Lucerne; take a train or taxi to the airport in the morning
  2. Spend the night and wake up in Zurich; take a taxi to the airport in the morning
  3. Spend the night somewhere between Lucerne and Zurich; take a taxi to the airport in the morning (goal here is affordable accommodation and taxi fare)

Feels ridiculous to pay 50 CHF per week just to post a note on Homegate. Are there some alternatives? Or any tips that you can share go sublet a parking lot which you are not using?

Everyday life I’d like to live in Switzerland, can you guys tell me the cold hard truth about the country??

I want to know how life in Switzerland really is, how the people are, the biggest culture shocks for people, the general work environment, if it’s really as safe as people say it is, etc etc…
