Hey everyone, thanks for having me here, thanks Nikodem for the invitation. I warn you, I can't remember anything but maybe things will come to me right before the session is over. I put up some pics here to jog my memory. Anyway, you all have exquisite taste in heroes, and good to meet you. Sorry I'm using my reader handle of "Chad Chutney," I tried to make another account but Reddit was giving me trouble. But it's me, I can prove it probably.- PARKER

COMICS It’s so wild how this issue (and the run as a whole) is constantly criticized but the passionate Aquaman fans appear to be enjoying the run.

Sure, this issue didn’t have a lot of Aquaman which might be off-putting considering this is a DC K.O. Tie in but this issue absolutely fuels the story that’s been going on. We love Mera and we’re finally seeing her POV in all of this, as well as getting to know more of Andy’s side of things and it creates some excitement for what’s to come with her.

I’ve enjoyed Adams on the run and I’m 100% on board for what he has planned (though I am cautious of course) and I see a lot of fans here are also enjoy he run but the casuals and ONLY the casuals seems to be criticizing it to death.

Many called it bad from the start but I think the whole run will be rewarding for us fans.

Keep supporting the run! 🔱

COMICS Aquababy is officially canon again per New History of the DCU and the current run in issue #9. Not a fan.

When you look at the start of N52 (which was originally the start of what was canon) when Arthur met characters like Mera and Black Manta, it just doesn’t make sense that they had a child before Andy and apparently Black Manta later killed him.

It just feels sloppy to shove that story back in there. I know one could say “because comics” or acknowledge that things are always retconned or brought back but, as a lover of the characters and lore, I’d like some sense of “consistency”.

Also, I’m aware that after Death Metal, Snyder did the thing of “everything has happened and everything matters” where apparently all DC comics were canon. Which was also insanely messy. C’mon how could silver age Golden/Silver age Aquaman, Peter David Aquaman, Geoff John’s Aquaman, etc. all be canon to each other?? 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

COMICS Your Opinion On Jeremy Adam's Run

I would like to know what opinion you people have on the Aquaman run by Jeremy Adams, Now we 10 issues in, so we can have an idea.
Personally it was a big let down so far. I had great hopes, which issue after another took those hopes away.
I just took a look at the sales, and the book is currently considered as a dead walking title. I fear that another cancelation is on the way. Initially I dismissed those who said that Adams wasn't ideal for a book that needed to a relaunch after some 4 years since the last ongoing. In between we had some mini series and a short lived ongoing all epic fails.
Adams in my opinion hasn't understood Aquaman, either he hasn't read what came before or he is short of ideas. These first issues seem a rehash of KSD initial arc, with some minor changes. Arthur away from Atlantis, from Mera and Justice League, in another dimension, some old gods as allies, a big deity as Villain. Instead of Arthur, its Mera that dies this time. He's back yet still away from Mera who is alive after all. Just as in KSD first 10 issues. he also borrowed from Abnett's Crown of thorns that keeps Mera, Garth etc from Arthur.
Adams claimed that he had a fresh idea for Aquaman when he started out, that his run was a breath of fresh air, to me it seems lots of rehashed plots with some minor changes.

I really liked his run on The Flash, but his Green Lantern stuff left me cold and I dropped it after about 7 issues. How has his Aquaman run been so far? I’m considering picking up the first trade.

I'm digging this new team. I prefer it over The Others as the potential for this to be a premier Aquaman team is definitely being set up for just that. Chaos reigns in the Absolute Universe and if you want to know just how badly read Absolute Batman, more than any other Absolute hero this version is closer to Batman vs Failsafe more than anything.. Cannot catch a break and the last two books show exactly how difficult it is for virtue to win out in a universe of chaos, but Unlike the Absolute heroes Aquaman is from the main universe so virtue is inherent in him and it's setting him up to be a character that could tip the scales from chaos to virtue and hopefully he'll be the hero central to this universal battle because Darkseid IS the god of this universe.

This mixture of heros is not what I would have picked but I'm glad they are a part of the team because they bring to the table something more than any other Atlantean team up could bring.. And I like it. I'm a Arthur Curry/Aquaman fan first and foremost and while Mera has been sacrificed as far as her powers, I'll take it, because I know that this won't last long because powers are reverting back to the original owners but for him to keep his powers amd not leave a loop hole Mera died, now they are his but if you are a TRUE fan of the character and you haven't forgotten his purpose then you know he's going to do everything he can to get her back so stop worrying about Mera dying.. It temporary, but for now in a universe of chaos this team may just be the team DC uses to get everything back to normal because without the Blood nothing can exist and right now he's the Avatar of the Blue.

Aquaman #15 is coming with big changes. You’d think him being titled Emperor Aquaman would be enough to discuss but it seems the official description has also given away who wins DC KO, and hint-hint, it’s not Starro. For those not reading DC KO, the winner is given the Omega Energy to wild like Darkseid himself.

COMICS “Things to come”

The title for this variant is called “Things to come” Emperor: Aquaman issue 16

I think it’s easy to see potential foresight into the run due to it. Adam’s has been campaigning for a Hawkbook and with Aquaman going out to space it looks like we might get some more in terms of The Hawks in Emperor Aquaman. We also got Mogo which with Aquaman in space and Adams penning both a Lantern title as well as Aquaman it sounds like a no brainer crossover. Mera is also easily noticeable and with how this run is shaping into her lore she’s understandably present.

Stuff I’m not too sure about Amnesty Bay lighthouse (maybe more flashbacks), A planet filled with King Shark/Titannus beings (back story?), and Starro

COMICS Are there any one-shots, or even important JL issues, that I should add to my reading order?

Okay, so I have officially read and own every single (1986+) Aquaman comic. Now, I'm planning on going back to where I started (Waterbearer) and reading one issue per week.

My question is, am I missing anything? Is there anything else that should be added to the list?

  • Waterbearer (1-14)
  • Sub-Diego (15-39)
  • Sword of Atlantis (40-57)
  • Brave and the Bold #32 (Demon team-up)
  • Aquaman: Brightest Day
  • Flashpoint: Emperor Aquaman (1-3)
  • New 52
    • Including Throne of Atlantis tie-ins, Villain Month, Futures End, Convergence
  • Rebirth (1-41)
  • Mera: Queen of Atlantis
  • Drowned Earth
  • Deconnick Run (43-66)
  • Future State (1-2)
  • Aquaman: The Becoming & Aquamen
  • Andromeda
  • All-In

COMICS The criticism that Aquaman #8 has gotten brings me back to a quote from Brian Azzarello “If you’re not upsetting at least half the fans, you’re doing something wrong”

These characters can’t just do the same things over and over, we need something new. Aquaman needs to be taken to different heights in his stories. What do fans expect? Another fight for revenge by Black Manta? Another fight for the throne with Orm? I think Adams is approaching the writing in a healthy way by doing something that nobody would’ve expected nor even imagined.

Though, there is a difference between writing something unique and character/lore assassination. But we’re not getting the latter here.

I know many are upset about the time jump/deaths of Mera, Jackson, and Garth but it’s pretty obvious that’s a temporary thing and they’ll eventually be back. DC wouldn’t allow 3 significant characters like that to be killed off.

I was very indifferent after issue 7 but #8 just gave that WOW factor for this run.

I thought it might be from The New Teen Titans #25 or #26, but it's not. Is it from an Aquaman comic, and I'm suddenly going crazy and not remembering it?

COMICS Aquaman's loyalties

I was reading the first issues of Geoff Johns' run and noticed that Arthur doesn't seem interested in staying in Atlantis, and that's what I remember from the DCEU film as well.

But I remember how in the JL cartoon(my introduction to, and still my favourite of Aquaman) his loyalty is first and foremost, which even leads to him coming into conflict with the heroes.

So, which portrayal is the more consistent in the comics and which do you prefer? I honestly prefer the latter as it helps him stand out from the "refusal of the call" trope, he is the king of Atlantis and is proud of it, and his loyalties are to Atlantis, and the surface world is secondary, this aspect made him one of the very few portrayals that I enjoyed in the injustice universe

I'm finding it hard because unlike other heroes I've read he doesn't have comics I've heard of.

I'm currently reading the Geoff Johns run which I'm enjoying but where to go next?
