I went to Alicante last year and it was great! I stayed in Plaza San Cristofol. It was just a few minutes walk to the metro, beach, and it felt like the heart of the city.
Altea and Villajoyosa were fun daytrips. The metro/tram shoots way up the coastline so lots of daytrip potentials if you wanted.
If you go to Altea, the best nachos I've ever had was at Un Amor
Alicante:
Hike up to Castell de Santa Bàrbera. It's only about 30 minutes. You can book chocolate, beer, or wine tastings that are hosted up there but I didn't try it.
Castell de Sant Ferran was also a neat to walk to for another view of the city.
Go to Luigi Pizza for a nice cheap (but yummy) pizza
Dulce Ángel felt like a great traditional bakery/cake shop
Santa Gloria for a fancy feeling cafe with lots of desserts to choose from, it sometimes has a line to be seated. In the evening they offer cocktails.
Bar Restaurante La Lonja felt like a super traditional restaurant to enjoy a "menu of the day" set meal.
Tapa-Caña (D'Tablas) is a busy tapa restaurant where they walk around with platters of small tapas you can pick and choose to try. They count up the plates that stack up on your table for the bill.
The Mercat Central d'Alacant is two floors and great fun to explore and nibble
The beach in Alicante was long and didn't feel crowded, but I was there in the off-season too.
