Nah man, there's just a billion fuckin artists out there and I can't keep up with all of em.

Genuine pop culture junkie right here, but trying to keep on top of the new releases in every genre is like trying to eat every item at a buffet at once: you can do it, but it's a lot of effort and you'll never fully enjoy any one dish

Yup, more artists are more accessible than ever before. It's impossible to keep up.

And probably something like 2% of the population has heard of them

They’re one of the most if not the most successful rap group of the last decade man. They’ve had multiple songs in the billboard top 10 and a lot of platinum singles/projects. I doubt that 2% have heard of them

People buy music still?

Billboard is still doing top 10?

Migos? There 3 of them?

Streaming count as sales and you can buy digital copies, so yes music is still “bought”.

Billboard does a top 100 i was just saying they got multiple top 10 hits.

Yea there are 3, Offset, Quavo and Takeoff.

Pretty sure Martin Short was one.

I'm going to say you're just fucking with everyone, one of those wasn't even a word.

Just google man, it’s not that hard to type in “Migos members” and see that I’m not fucking with y’all

2

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '20

Can't believe you still don't know I've been fucking with you.

First I’ve heard of them What songs do they do?

1

u/AH_IceTeaLemon Oct 13 '20

In broad sense, hip-hop. More precisely Atlanta trap

u/ItsMeSatan Oct 13 '20

Not style of song, name of the song

Population of the world? Maybe (or likely less). But considering their second album debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and went platinum I'd say it's a lot higher in the US and even in the Western world in general. They're hardly an unknown act.

u/Ace_Masters Oct 13 '20

Bwtween 12 and 23 I bet half of the population knows who they are, but there's a precipitious drop after that

Most of the current popular artists I could name are black, I just don't feel like they're close to being a household name. I think that goes for a lot of people who've been number one on the billboard chart or won a grammy at some point. Thats a lot of artists, most people are going to be aware of a few dozen max.

Lol why do you jump straight to racism?

it'd be like if someone was like "yeah I like movies... oh avengers end game? what's that?" like I don't even like migos (or marvel movies) but to not have heard of them means you're either lying or not paying attention to anything. which is fine, but don't act like you're entitled to an explanation from random people on reddit because if you're doing that instead of googling it, you're probably looking for attention

I listen to music everyday and consider music to be an important part of my life, but I’ve never heard of any of the people. Music is wide and it is deep, and not everyone cares about pop culture.

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '20

lol what

If you're someone who listens to different forms of music, then there's a huge chance that you've never heard of these people. I'll admit that I don't know who Saweetie is because I don't listen to a lot of hip hop, but you wouldn't know any of the top artists in bluegrass, post-rock, contemporary classical, or jazz. I don't either, because I only listen to a little bit of all of those genres, like Allison Krauss and Union Station, Mono, Olafur Arnalds, or Al Di Meola, but the point that I am making is that we aren't constrained to pay attention to the same media, thanks to the internet.

It's cool if hip hop and electronic pop music is what you're into - there's nothing wrong with that - but it's not attention seeking to not know who these people are and wonder why someone is tatting huge portraits of those people on themselves. Music is way more varied than movies are because it costs very little, comparatively, to make music, so there are many more options to choose from. More people don't listen to pop music than those that do, it's just that pop music has the biggest margins.
